Forza Horizon 3 PC Performance Thread

So. how's the performance now? I'm considering getting it as it's on sale right now.

I have a 3570k and GTX 980.

I5-4460 and 980 here

Last time I tried after the 3rd patch or so it would still drop into the 20s briefly for no reason. Hardly ever ran at 60 even at 1080/low

Can't say how much better it is lately but doesn't sound like it's improved much. I just gave up

Got a new PC with a i5 6600k and a 1060 6gig and this seems like it would totally be up my alley.

After a few patches is the PC version up to snuff yet? Really now liking the current word of mouth about the port quality, :/

How representative of the overall quality of the current version of the game is the demo?

Just jumped on this with the Windows Store price drop. 3770k @ 4.2Ghz and a 980ti. Really excited about this, I played the original more then just about every racing game I've ever played (behind only Dirt Rally, which may as well qualify as a religion for me).

Really hoping I can pull 1440/60!

It's been a while since I refunded. Does FPS still tank at Surfer's Paradise and is there still egregious frame skipping present (with framerate smoothing on or off)?

Just tried the demo on a 2500k @4.5 and 980. Performance is kind of all over the place. 30fps has noticeable input delay but other wise is pretty smooth. 60fps seems like a dream on my setup. At 30 I can run it at ultra and it looks crazy but the delay is weird. Sucks it's still not super great

Well I'm back again with more news of FH3's PC performance. This time good news, kinda'. Pretty sure the CtD's I had been getting (repeatable ones where you enter a race with the car you're already driving causes a CtD everytime) was being caused by changing the MSAA in Advanced Options. If I stick to a preset there's no problem. If I change MSAA from 4x to 2x I will start crashing. This is obviously a big problem but I can at least ignore it now.
Still no intention on buying their DLC though, unless this gets fixed, which I'm sure it won't as it may be an issue with Windows 10's UPA.

I've found that playing it at 36 FPS on my 72hz freesync monitor feels about on par with the excellent Xbox version.

You still notice the variable performance around the map, but it's much more consistent than when targeting 60. And not as sluggish as 30 FPS.

Oh, I didn't realise there was a demo. I'll give that a crack with my similar setup (2500k @ 4.9 but with a 280X).

Seems like the demo isn't the current version so who knows how much different the performance would be now. I have an XO and want to enjoy the game so I might just play it there if I get to a point of burn out with performance on PC.

Also I'm crazy and am going to play it with a wheel.

Why can't I download the demo? The free button is blocked for me.

Do I need the anniversary update or something to be able to download the game from the store?

Well shit. The full game runs way worse than the demo did for me. I guess Ill just re download it on the XO. Frustrating but I just want to enjoy the game. It was a stutter filled mess every few seconds. Not sure what caused that once I got out in the open world. At 30 and 60. Ah well. Thank goodness for Play Anywhere.

I've developed some horrendous stuttering recently. Prior to this the game ran really well. It's so bad I can't even play.

CPU and GPU usage are extremely low. Something isn't right.

I think there's something to do with the in-game mirror, if you turn that down to low it fixed all of my problems. Not sure if you know about that!

the demo is the best performing area of the map

Thanks, I didn't but at this point I'm just going to play the XO version. I dont want to mess around with a bad port. It wasnt just the terrible stuttering either, the damn cars were jittering around in the cutscene also. I wouldnt care at locking it at 30, but the damn input delay for a game like this is terrible, and Ive read its almost nonexistent on XO.

"The demo is the best perfoming area of the map"

It was worse for me, stuttering wise, on the full game.

oh i see. it was so bad for me on the demo hard to imagine how it could be worse when comparing the same area. and yeah the cars were jittering all over the place even during normal driving for me. that + stuttering + massive frametime fluctuations + poor framerates in general

Yep, the Xbox One version is great! I really like the PC version, but it sounds super finicky for a lot of different people. Hope you enjoy the game on Xbox!

The demo doesn't have any of the really demanding races.

i7-3770 and RX 480, I can still play at 1080p 60fps, I just had to futz with the settings a bit, turn some down to medium, others to high/ultra. The game is beautiful and runs great, highly recommend it.

There's a demo available for the PC now, give it a try and test it out for yourself.

not sure where youre going with that, but i cant maintain stutter free 60 fps on a much faster system than yours even in the undemanding demo area

Didn't mean much by it, I just thought that was cool.

I've got the game installed on an SSD, not sure if that helps? It's also fully patched up. Before the patches it was stuttering like crazy with huge framedrops, but now I don't see any of those. It could be that I'm just not noticing them, but I doubt it.

Picked this up. On 980GTX couldn't get 60fps constant and the trees alaise way too much even at 4x MSAA which I found distracting, so set it to 30fps 8x MSAA and just maxed the thing out. Looks great, but yeah there's input lag, but I'm terrible enough at the Forza series that I don't notice it too much. I've never liked how Forza controls (too sim, even in Horizon, I wish it played like Burnout/NFS Hot Pursuit) so it just adds to that slightly.

the msaa doesnt cover the vegetation at all. you can enable trssaa in nv cpl for coverage but perf hit can be steep in high vegetation areas.

Any more word on performance patches, or fixing the input lag at 30 fps? I'm hoping for something with the big expansion.

Ok, finally sat down and played a half dozen hours instead of just messing around in the intro. Ended up turning everything down to medium/low to get 60fps as much as possible. It doesn't matter how gorgeous or jaggy free the game looks, nothing can compare to the fun and excitement of silky 60fps dashboard cam in a racing game. It's just such a huge difference.

But yeah, this game cannot hold 60fps. No matter how low I set things with a 980 GTX I still get a lot of dips to 58 fps which causes stutter/judder and that's in the normal areas. In the city or races with multiple cars on screen it dips down to 54-55 fps and when there's effects like sand/water etc... for example in dune buggy races I'm seeing drops down to 40fps even with everything on low 1080p no AA.

Still, the game is fun enough at 60fps with stutter/judder drops that I can begrudgingly live with it as I play through the races. But yeah, I would love to play the game at a smooth locked 60fps throughout entire races but probably never gonnaa happen. I even tried dropping down to 720p which made it hard a bit, but still couldn't keep 60fps and had drops into 55-58 fps regularly.

Otoh, if I was willing to go wtih 30fps, I could get up to 4k ultra settings no AA and holy crap at 4k the game is absolutely gorgeous.

I do have to say that I've never really enjoyed any Forza game, but at 60fps dashboard cam with dune buggies and trucks doing off-road races, this game feels a lot like Sega Rally 2006 which is one of my favorite rally games along with Rallisport Challenge 2. This feels like a worthy successor in the off-road racing.

Your 980 isn't the issue, game is CPU limited.

That's definitely possible. Running a two year old i7 4970k which I guess is one step below the latest and greatest i7 6700k, but from reading this thread and poking around online it seems like the regular drops to 58fps from 60fps on areas that shouldn't drop because they hold 60fps could definitely be the DRM every few seconds popping in and creating the stutter.

The larger dips in the city make sense because there's way more geometry & detail. And the effects dropping the framerate (water/dirt) make sense because they're effects, though they seem really unoptimized to drop the framerate from 60fps -> to the 40s in 1080p medium no AA with an i7 4970k+980 GTX.

I sincerely doubt that a 4790k brings any significant performance drops from the 6700k. The CPU bottlenecks are mainly complaints of earlier generation i5 processors. There are still some lingering performance bottlenecks that will occur regardless of how modern/powerful your hardware is, and they're simply engine limitations (which may or may not be related to DRM).

I wonder if the game has memory leaks. When I started playing today, to my surprise I was holding 60fps constantly everywhere on the map outside the middle of the city where it was 45-55fps. I attributed it to some of the stuff I had switched from medium -> low or off like reflections/mirrors.

Played for like 4-5 hours and as the night went along, the performance got worse and worse to the point where areas that were 60fps earlier in the day like Byron Bay were choppy 50fps stuttery messes to the point that I just set it to 30fps for the last hour or two.

On top of that, as the night went along the load times got longer and longer too. I even had a weird bug where the game would get stuck loading but if I alt+tab out of the window and came back it would fix it and load the race/event.

And I had 3 software complete crashes over the 4-5 hour session.

-_-

Game was still pretty fun, but yeah this is the worst running game I've played on PC since Arkham Knight.
