Forza Horizon 3 PC Performance Thread

I deleted the game off my HDD and re-installed on my SSD and the difference was night and day.

Before reinstall I was getting 25-30 FPS, unlocking the FPS over 30 was unplayble stuttering.

After reinstall I get 45-60 FPS, even with the frame dips in populated areas it feels much smoother. Settings set to High.

Spec:
i5 2500k @4.2ghz
8GB Ram
GTX 980 4GB

I don't know if it was the result of putting it on the SSD, or just reinstallling. I have a feeling the patching process was maybe broken, because every previous patch made absolutley no difference to me.

Either way, I'm very happy I can play this game at a reasonable framerate now.
I basically have your computer. Good to see it's pretty playable now for that.

I assume you've already tried setting both static and dynamic geometry to medium? Those, and shadows to a lesser extent, are CPU-limiting factors on the systems I've tested.

Haven't tried static, just dynamic. Will give it a shot.

E: I have however tried maxing everything out at 4K30 just for shits and giggles, and it runs like a dream (in addition to looking fucking phenomenal). Not a dropped frame in sight, as far as I could notice. Only issue is I've gotten so used to 60fps that I end up spinning out on all my drifts because I'm too twitchy on the analog stick.

My 980Ti is so under stressed playing this game at 1080p, the fans don't even spin up any noticeable amount. Outside of SP the CPU is twiddling its thumbs also.

I can't crank the resolution though because it just makes the un-optimised bits that drop frames worse. If this game wasn't so 'peaky' you'd be looking at ~1800p60.

So maybe the refresh rate isn't the problem. Maybe an issue with the SSD it's on as it pretty much crashes whenever I need to swap a car for a race as well as other crashes, but only in free roam. Maybe uninstall and re-install.

That's how I've been running it, 60 fps still lurches to 50 in the city and I was sick of tinkering so just mashed everything to ultra set it to 4k 30 and enjoyed it as is. I can't get it to drop frames at 30 no matter what I do so with how nice it looks I'm good playing like this.

Edit: i7 6700k / gtx1070 / 16gb ddr43200 / Samsung 950 Pro

Except I'm so used to 60 now that I'd rather tolerate some frame drops. I also ended up dropping static geometry to medium and shadows to low (still looks good in motion) and that improved things too.

Sounds like the latest patch improved things quite a bit. Still hoping there'll be a demo at some point. Is there any chance I'll be able to run this when a GTX 970 and a Phenom II 965? I understand it's pretty CPU intensive.

I left it running overnight

I wouldn't be completely surprised if it turns out performance is dependant on the speed of your network card or if you have a webcam plugged in.

Crashes every time I swap a car for a race. Uninstalled and re-installed, no change. Only changes to my PC are the drivers and the games patches. The game has gone from running pretty well to complete garbage. I've said it before and I'll say it again, they'd better get someone else to make the PC port for Horizon 4. This PC release has been a disaster.

That issue is there in previous driver versions as well. They've just discovered it.

I know, but the latest drivers dropped performance for me, and it got better when I rolled back to the previous ones.

When you disable in-game Vsync and force it in the Nvidia control panel the lag problem gets fixed.

Weirdly enough I felt like there was less input lag at 30fps with the latest patch than before when using the ingame vsync instead of the NVCP one.

Huh you might be on to something here. I uninstalled and reinstalled on the same SSD, and my framerate seems to be a little more stable. And my Groove Music crashing is gone too

Now the game won't load or starts to load and crashes instantly back to the desktop over and over again. Anyone come across this and fix it?

They tampered with the graphics, apparently. Many users noticed this, so I guess it must be true? I believe some textures were changed, shadows and lighting.

Nah I don't beleive this. No difference on my setup, it is possibly a new issue with the new nvidia driver.

The patch seems to perform worse for me in terms of fps dips, but less stuttering. The dips are more consistent and longer lasting though.

MS seems to have just done a big ol' drive-by shit on PC gamers with this title out of spite with them not having an Xbone. I'd be livid if I had bought this before all this crap was known :/

Problem is, the game is very fun. So despite me absolutely hating the fps drops, I'm still having fun. Any other game I would have just not even bothered.

Finally gave up and got a refund.

Really too bad. It's a great game and every time I felt myself settling into it, boom, crash to desktop. It kept destroying any momentum and at 25 days since purchase, I didn't want to fight it anymore or just hope that eventually it would be fixed.

Yes, after they finally fixed the stuttering I started playing the game. But I am crashing every 10-15 minutes. I stopped playing again and am waiting for another patch.

Let's hope but I'm not that hopeful.
For me the game started pretty well. It was only after the second patch that the game now crashes. Nearly always when swapping a car for a race or in Free Roam. I did a race yesterday for an hour. No problems. As soon as I went free roam CtD in 30 minutes. There's something seriously wrong with the game and they caused it with their patch. They haven't got a clue as far as I'm concerned. So no, I'm not hopeful of a fix. It's been a disastrous PC experience for many, many people.

This is what I'm running now:
1080p
vsync on
frame smoothing off
60fps limit in game

16xAF
Shader High
Motion High
Env Texture High
Static Geo Medium
Dynamic Geo Ultra
MSAA 4x
Reflection High
Windshield Medium
Mirror Low (I only use external cam in this game)

In NVidia control panel, my game setting looks like so
Driver version v373.06

This gives me 60fps nearly everywhere in the free roam area, except some parts in surfers paradise. I haven't tested outback area.
For races I get a dip to 50fps at the start but after T1 is rocking 60fps all the way to the end.
Races in the dirt can have more prolonged dips.

i7 6700k 4.5Ghz, GTX 970 1550/3850Mhz, 2x8GB RAM 3000Mhz CL14.

I haven't got any stability issues, the game has not crashed in over 20 hours of game time now. Longest sessions probably lasted 3-5hours.

New Nvidia driver just released which will hopefully fix crashes in FH3.
Well, so far so good. I am indeed free of crashes. Can swap cars for races fine and no random CtD's though I've only played for a few hours. That said it would have crashed by now. Looks like Nvidia fucked it up (does it say on the driver notes that they fucked it up lol) so apologies to Playground in this respect.

Interestingly as usual with a new driver the game re-optimizes itself and I decided to stay with its opinion. Basically it gave me 4096x2016 and Ultra dynamic settings. Of course the Ultra settings was too much, regulalrly falling into 40fps. So I changed the Dynamic settings into High and fine. Even in Surfers Paradise no frame drops at all. And at this resolution it looks great (I can live with the black bars). Of course I can change the resolution but as it runs fine see no reason to.
Hope this performance lasts.

I have no idea what happened, but my game is now performing much worse than it was a week ago. The performance of this game is such a frustrating roller coaster.

Wow you have the same set up as me! I initially had only 8gb ram and after increasing to 12gb runs muchh better. I have my CPU and GPU slightly over clocked. Running at 4k on mostly high and some ultra settings. I get 25-35fps

thank god, i thought it was just me

gone from free roam and (in races from about 8th place to first) with 60+ FPS to now chugging between 30 to 45 FPS everywhere

Finally got back to this after a few weeks hiatus and it's pretty much rock solid at 30fps on Ultra settings, even in the city. Achieving and maintaining 60fps was much better, but there where still dips that were too distracting.

I fired this up the other night after finishing FH2, and it does seem much improved. :) It's also really crazy how much of a visually vibrant jump this is over its predecessor. I'm getting around 45-60fps @ 4K (mostly Ultra) on a mildly OC'd 980 Ti FTW, which is perfectly good, especially since I'm not seeing the stuttering anymore, and I went through multiple events without crashing.

I've been playing it on X1. Maybe it's time to fire up the PC build again. I have a similar GPU (980 Ti Classified).
