Forza Horizon 3 PC Performance Thread

Latest patch seems to have given my average framerate in trouble-spots such as Surfer's Paradise a healthy boost of 10-15 FPS. It still drops down to mid or low 60's during a race with lots of cars on screen, but considering that framerate would normally be in the low 50's before, it's progress. Also all of my micro-stutter appears to be completely gone when I uncap my framerate, though I still think I'll keep it capped at 60 just to keep it consistent.

What Nvidia drivers are you guys running? I just tried the game for the first time since the new patch and 375.50 and it crashed as soon as I loaded up a race.

The latest official here according to GeForce experience.

You know what I am finding interesting about the game now that I "beat it" doing the last showcase. It seems as if the races once you get to Level 4 and above in your festivals are a hell of a lot more varied than they were getting to this point. Perhaps I was just not paying a lot of attention, but I feel as if now each race is forcing me to pick cars I normally do not play.

Keep in mind I always stick to the default option or what the game suggests. I deviated once or twice and setup my own races so I could keep using that GT Forza Edition, but for the most part I have just been doing whatever class and type of car the game has suggested.

I feel like they should have been doing this the whole time is why I even mention it. It is almost as if the real variety has not even started until I am a decent amount along in the game itself.

I'm on a laptop that's able to handle the game just fine on anything but 1080, it doesn't make any sense. It can be on low and still stutter, it's not even the framerate itself that drops.

Any other resolution is fine but 1080. Anyone else have this issue or a possible fix?

Reposting this as I'd really like to get to the bottom of why this laptop has stuttering every few seconds at 1080, even at the main menu.

Any other resolution is fine.

Soooo... is there anything I should watch out for as a GTX 970 user, now that the demo is out? Which setting is the most taxing and what should I set if I try to get 60fps?

I know that will be very difficult to achieve and I could set for 30fps, but I'd first try to get the framerate up.

Played some after the latest update. Their is a solid 10 frame boost when playing in the cockpit view, which is what I almost always do. The tram stop area seems to be the most troublesome area in the city for me and i get around 69/70fps when in the cockpit but drop down to high 50s when I use any other view. Running at max with 8xMSAA and frame smoothing off. Outside of the city, my frame rates are 80-100+fps. The stuttering is gone and it's nice and smooth for me. They just need to work on the city area and it will be great IMO.

I have a 970 with the 3.5gb + .5gb of slow vram and if i set textures to anything above low, i drop a lot of frames, moreso than any other setting. Luckily the game still looks great even with low textures.

I try to aim for 60fps but when in a race with other cars i drop to 50, in the city area it will drop to 40.

Locked 30fps at max manual settings running 1080p
Game has given me no problems so far.

After upgrading from i5 2500k to i7 6700k running at 4,4ghz atm, I also hit 80 fps everywhere and around 50 in surfers paradise. In cockpit view i never drop below 70. All ultra with 8xmsaa. Before I could barely get stable 45 FPS.

I get the same frame rate at max settings at 1440p as I do at the lowest settings at 1024x768.

I'm deleting this game off my hard drive.

Haven't played this game since the 3rd Forzathon event with the drag racing from like a month ago

Tried to play it today, all my video settings were reset, and my control feels like I'm playing in molasses. I tweaked my settings back to what they were, and nothing improved. I used to play at 48fps lock just so I wouldn't deal with any drops and keep temps down, but I bumped it up to 72 and it still felt unresponsive as shit. Anyone else having this issue?

Tried the demo for myself and wow its even worse than all the videos and posts made it seem. Game is a completely unplayable turd if you dont lock it to 30 fps. Cant imagine how awful it is in more demanding parts of the map.

So much for "3570k's are still fine!" :( I mean after the latest updates I get mostly 50-60fps with my 1070 without stutters and don't have to lock the framerate anymore but I guess I still have to get a new CPU sooner or later :/

Wonder how much of this is RAM speed, out of curiosity. Noticed quite a few occasions recently where RAM speed is weighing heavily in modern performance (especially if FH3 is decrypting environment files in realtime).

RAM speed heavily affects Surfer's Paradise perf. I'm fairly sure cpu usage increases also as RAM speed drops (cpu waiting for assets?). I say speed, it could be latency related as the tests I did involved dropping the XMP profile.

I also hit 80 fps everywhere
I'm really struggling to believe that, especially in the more problematic races.

Which races do you consider problematic, except the ones inside surfers paradise? I can test it. But I have been playing several hours daily since I upgraded (didnt touch the game at all before that, and I got it since release) and I did not have a single crash and cannot remember ever dropping below 70 unless I was in the tram area of surfers paradise. maybe I did, but I really did not notice, the frame rate smoothing is doing a good job now.

Shadow and tree lod pop-up needs a fix. It can be pretty hideous. I wonder if it's like that on purpose or a bug but it's nasty to see.
At least my CtD's seem to be over. Going to High preset seemed to fix it (even altering a few settings after) but I can't help but feel there's something somewhere that'll balls it up if it's altered.

There are street races in the rainforest in dark and rain that tank my fps from an otherwise pretty constant 60fps, to 48fps at the race start.
I even play at 900p, and my GPU is sitting at 60-70% usage.

900p in a 2016 PC gaming thread, still can't hold framerate.

Yea the port is totally fixed! See PC guys, Microsoft loves us.

I hadn't played the game in over a week, but all of a sudden the d-pad on my wheel, a Thrustmaster TX, stopped working on the map. It works fine navigating menus and such. I can manipulate the map with my mouse or XB1 controller just fine. Anyone else run into this?

Performance is pretty good now actually, but it still crashes every 20 minutes for me...pretty hard to find motivation to ever play it when you know you're gonna crash 3 times an hour

It might be worth doing a low-level ram test (unless that's a known issue I don't know about).

Well I'll be darned finally cured my stuttering in the game (haven't removed the frame rate drops from the CPU intensive races though).

I'm rocking a 6700K and SLI GTX 980 Tis (yes I know non use SLI grr) with 16GB of 3200hz RAM. My monitor is an Acer XB270HU.

Anyways to the fix, if I set my refresh rate to 60hz in the Nvidia control panel and set vsync on in game. My resolution is set to 2560x1440p with frame rate smoothing on, motion blur on and everything set to Ultra except for Shadows (High)/Dynamic foliage (Medium)/Static foliage (Medium) and Rear view mirror (High).

The framerate sticks to 58 most of the time in races and in the open world and when the framerate does drop in the specific troublesome races it will go down to about 42 at the lowest but with none of the stutter I was previously experiencing in those races.

Hopefully this helps out you guys (thanks youtube)

It is quite unfortunate, especially because it seems Gears 4 has no issues running but I couldn't care less about it. Only the games I want to play have shit ports -_-

I have mentioned this before but try 50hz and 50fps if it's a option for you. It allows a more consistent performance and allows you to pump the resolution up a bit.

It's really such a great game that it's a huge disappointment in the way it can perform at times. Still very happy that it came to PC anyway.

It's probably well known at this point but since people were still asking in the PC demo thread...

To get rid of the input lag at 30fps you need to leave the framerate unlocked in the game options and cap it at 30 (or whatever) at gpu drivers level from Nvidia control panel instead.
It works.

I'm playing with a controller, can someone tell me what's the best settings to make this feel a little more arcady? I'm finding that the cars feel a little to heavy and are hard to control.....

This is exactly what I'm doing. Locked 50fps maxed out and 2xMSAA, with a GTX 1060 and an i7 4790k. Never dips. It couldn't hold 60 and this is a nice option and still very smooth at 50fps.

Just tried the demo, and i have no sound, i can hear menus and some sound effects (like when you gain points) but nothing else, no engines, no voice acting, no music, no enviromental sound, is this also an issue in the full game or just the demo?

It's significantly improved since launch.

Agreed. Surfer's used to be unplayable for me, but now it's perfectly adequate everywhere. I'm just a little bummed out that I need to leave many settings on Medium to get 60fps at 1440p, especially given I'm running a 6600K & a 1080 :/

Yeah strange. Think it as to do with the programming. Got i7-6700HQ and 1060 gtx , cannot max it. Its very demanding. Running with a mix of ultra and medium settings.

What settings are you running if you don't mind telling me them all? We have basically the same setup and I'm getting drops into 45s but I'm running mostly max.

1440p, Vsync on (60), Motion Blur Off, FPS smoothing off.

Anisotropic 16X
Shadow Quality Medium
Environment textures High
Static & Dynamic Geometry Medium
MSAA 4x (used to be 8x but for some reason performance dropped after the latest patch)
FXAA Off (makes no difference)
Reflections, Windshield Reflections, Mirrors & World Car Detail High.

Getting 60 nearly everywhere (some drops to 57-58 in races when lots of cars are kicking up dust or water and some drops to the low 50s near the tram in Surfer's).

Essentially I've tried to identify all the CPU-hungry settings and turned them down a bit, as the whole game is severely CPU-limited.

Game maxes out my RAM and pagefile usage, CPU usage is all over the place, and GPU usage hovers around 60%.

Just want to leave some feedback in this thread for those with slightly older GPUs.

My Setup

Intel 4670k @ 4Ghz
Nvidia GTX 780 @ 1Ghz
8GB of RAM

Played the demo fine at 1440p mix of high and medium - 30fps mostly dropped to high 20's (25 - 28) breifly on the beach race in the demo.

Bought the full game last night had 1 crash this morning - was still at 30fps most of the time even driving through surfers paradise.

Then after a save and exit to desktop when I boot it up now I can't get out of the hub area, it will just crash once I hit enter horizon.

Do you guys think it needs more system RAM and VRAM, but I have not had any low memory warnings?

Otherwise I am going to get a refund from MS.

Same GPU, I keep getting CTD. It's probably the VRAM because I have (mostly) no crashes when I'm putting the settings on low..

Demo runs great for me on a 970. Didn't turn the framerate counter on, but I didn't experience any noticeable slowdown or stuttering (except strangely during one cutscene). Setting were on Medium but the game still looks beautiful.
Will pick up the full game when it goes on sale.

Thought it was fixed. Played for quite a while without CtD's. Install the latest Nvidia driver and it's back to CtDing again, always on the same race.
Also getting my PC online with Xbox Live has been infuriating. Always shows blocked (when before it showed Terado connection as okay). Only way round it was to get my PC address DMZ. Works now I think. Fuck knows if it's worth it as I am considering giving up on FH3. I'm certainly not buying any DLC. They just don't deserve any more of my money.

I don't think its the memory any more.

When I contacted MS for a refund they offered to have me speak to tech support and I accepted.

Long story short - MStech support rolled my Nvidia GPU driver back a few versions and voila no more crashing BUT - this came at the expense of 4x longer load times.

Updated my driver myself after this but then ran into the persistent underclocking issue - even setting to "prefer maximum performance" in the Nvidia control panel did not fix this.

At this point I was fed up and got my refund, my GPU is not the newest but to me its unacceptable to ship a game in this state and with no clearer indication as to who can and cannot play.

If you have not refunded the game and are still on a 780 I would suggest firstly disable all overclocking on the GPU and if still CTD roll back your GPU driver.

Thanks for the details. Which version of the drivers did you roll back ? I think I did have less CTD with the one previous to the "Game Ready" one.
I don't have the underclocking issue though (except when it crashes, sometimes the clocks will revert back or I have to disable/enable the GPU in the device manager).
