Forza Horizon 3 physical version playing on Xbox One without the disc

All PS4 and Xbox One installs are the entire game on the HDD.

That's what I thought too, but when I popped Puyo Puyo Tetris in my PS4 for the first time a few days ago, it was done "installing" within about 10 seconds. I know the game is not *that* small. Maybe it's possible that some PS4 games can run off the disc? Or did it just complete the install silently after the progress bar filled and disappeared?

I just think Puyo Puyo Tetris is a tiny ass game... like 3 GB or something. I'll install it on my Xbox and find out, but I remember it being really small (which makes it weird that I uninstalled it, because it wouldn't save much space)

edit: yeah, not including the 1.5 GB patch, the game only installed 1.9 GB of data from the disc. Even if the PS4 version were twice as large, that's still pretty small

Games can start before they're fully installed. The progress bar is a progress bar for until the game is playable as opposed to fully installed. Generally it happens alot earlier on PS4 games than XB1. They often have limited functionality whilst they're still installing. The PS4 itself is really bad at letting you know when it's actually finished fully installing though, devs often build some kind of progress info into the games themselves but not always. Basically when you hear the disc drive stop spinning the thing is installed. I imagine Puyo Puyo is pretty small though so it wouldn't take much to get it playable.

The bolded is the case.

Both PS4 and Xbox One (although PS4 to a greater extent) will install a portion of the game until it is ready to play, and you can launch the game while the remainder installs in the background.

There is often a limit on what you can do once the game is launched, so I usually let the entire game install. I've also noticed that more recent PS4 games now require a much longer install time before it is ready for launch (~10-15 minutes), but maybe that is just the games I had tried.

Interesting ill have to check this out when I get home later. No clue if I uninstalled it after I sold it. Probably did.

Microsoft secretly reverted the DRM to work like they were original planning before launch! Your disk is now useless.

Edit: In all seriousness, it's probably just a glitch causing the game to skip over it's disk check.

Lucky bastard got an un-180d Xbox One.

I envy you.

Odd is Microsoft switching to the original plan silently?

Maybe they're about to do that online thing they originally wanted to do

MS silently launched their original xbox one plan. Try keeping your console offline for more than 24 hours.

Edit: but seriously try offlinr

Its baaaaack.

God I hope it is, just to see the reactions.

So it seems to be only MS games so far?

Maybe it's a hint of what's gonna be on the game pass and something broke?

that happened with mine a while back but it fixed once the next patch came in.

The progress bar doesnt show you the complete install, just when you can launch the game. You know its actually done installing when the disc stops spinning.

Confirming it is working for me too. I no longer have the FH3 disk because I gave it back to my cousin a while ago but the game is still working. I'm online and updated to the latest version (both Xbone and game) with no XBL Gold and am in the UK with a white Xbone I got when it came out with Sunset Overdrive so no funny business like preowned Xbone that is still primary console for someone.

Super weird. Not working with any other disc game though.

My Xbox One does this with every game I own physically except for Rainbow Six: Siege. Definitley a glitch Microsoft should look into, lol.

Okay, FH3 worked for me yesterday but, it has stopped working today.
When I launch the game the 'do you own this game or app' splash screen appears... oh well, back to manually inserting the disc.

A similar thing happened to me once with Overwatch, where the next time i turned my xbox on, i had to insert a disc again, don't recall the details that well. I didn't put much thought into it, as weird stuff happens regularly on Xbox. But definitely odd.

I'd been playing FH3 without the disc for the past couple weeks, it had been super handy but it's no wonder it's been patched now that a thread has been made about it.
