Frank Darabont writing and directing 'The Walking Dead' series for AMC

:(

Here's what Darabont had to say about the S2 renewal news/rumors:

Writer-director Frank Darabont (“The Shawshank Redemption,” “The Green Mile,” “The Mist”) says the rumor of an early 13-episode second season order for his AMC zombie series “The Walking Dead” is only a rumor.

The filmmaker seems particularly startled at the idea that season two would start production only a month or two after he completes season one.

“Shooting in February? As tired as I am right now getting season one through post, I'd rather shoot myself,” Darabont tells Ain't It Cool.

The six-episode first season of “Walking Dead” launches Halloween night on AMC.

Could just be PR talk, though. And they would have to film in Feb (this season started filming in Jun). They could probably get in there in April and be good for a 13 episode season.

That's not too surprising. Given the number of leaks/rumors that S2 is coming, it sounds like it's going to happen. However, I do think that AMC wants to make the announcement on their own terms in a press release rather than having it come out via internet gossip.

As a big fan of Darabont and huge huge fan of the source material, that trailer made me very apprehensive, aside from some stellar makeup work on the zombies.

Looks very low budget, very made for SyFy movie. I wish they could have hired the director of photography of The Wire / Treme / Generation Kill, would have been a perfect fit.

Unfortunately the speakers on this computer are busted so I'm making these judgements based purely on an audio-less trailer :lol

I think that's one from the set I posted earlier.

Are you going to do the official thread, gdt?

Absolutely.

Edit: Missed you posting them earlier, just saw the 6 seconds one.

yeah i caught those as well. very cool.

i havent actually read any of the books yet. been meaning to get the compendium, but now it looks like its out of print maybe? unavailable on Amazon anyways. thing looks fucking huge! expensive too.

also not sure if its a good idea to get into it now so close to the premiere of the show. might ruin the show for me. im thinking i might want to wait until after season one to start the book.

they just reprinted it last week or so, it may take a few weeks to show up on amazon. I don't think Amazon actually keeps comic stuff in stock. I ordered some books from them and they took almost 3 weeks to show up :/

You can also look for the compendium or TPB's at your local library if that's an option. I've been borrowing them from there to save some money.

ah cool. thanks for the advice guys.

now to figure out if i want to break down and get it before or after S1. been wanting to check it out for a while now.

The compendium is showing up in stock on Amazon now.

Did Amazon say they were in stock when you ordered them? I get 90% of my trades from them don't really have a problem. Get everything in a day or two. Usually takes them an extra week or two to initially get stock after a book hits comics stores, but that's not a big issue for me given the savings.

Amazon for sure keeps comic book stuff in stock. Never've had a problem ordering comics from them.

I too recommend the Compendium. You save alot of money that way.

- Brief Andrew Lincoln article in Variety
Andrew Lincoln logs life into 'Dead'
'Love Actually' co-star to make U.S. TV splash in AMC series

Andrew Lincoln was born into the world with a far less celebrity-friendly surname: Clutterbuck.

"Why do you think I changed it?" he jokes of the clunky old English moniker. "My first agent laughed and said to me, 'If I sign you, you can't have that name.' "

When the new AMC drama "The Walking Dead" premieres in October, Lincoln is the name that American audiences will remember.

"It's an amazing role," says the British import -- who made a splash in Richard Curtis' "Love, Actually" and in the cult hit U.K. TV series "This Life" -- of his first foray into American television. "It's a real honor to be involved in it."

Exec produced by writer-director Frank Darabont and Gale Anne Hurd, "Walking Dead" is based on Robert Kirkman's best-selling graphic novels and revolves around Rick Grimes (Lincoln), a Georgia cop that shepherds a group of survivors in an apocalyptic world overtaken by zombies.

"It reads like a Greek play," says Lincoln of the thriller. "It's so high-stakes in the world that they are inhabiting. It's all life or death, and this always makes for high drama."

Lincoln began acting in Bath, England, at age 14, playing the Artful Dodger in his all-boy private school production of "Oliver." He then joined the National Youth Theater of Great Britain.

"I was fully infected by the virus," he says of the realization that acting was his calling. When it came time for university, the budding thesp enrolled at London's Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.

Ironically, it wasn't Lincoln's resume but the birth of his son that helped him nail the "Dead" audition.

"I'm absolutely convinced I got this gig because I hadn't slept in two weeks," he cheerfully recalls of the long, late nights with a newborn. "I looked apocalyptic and gaunt. It was very 'zombie chic.' (Darabont) must have thought, 'This guy is the real deal.' "

I have some great photos from my time on the set as a zombie in the pilot episode, will post closer to the premiere. They did an awesome job with my make-up, and even got me to confront my fear of wearing contact lenses for the first time ever.

nice!

Quick question: should I read the graphic novels before the TV series starts?

I've read great things about the novels, but at the same time, I think I'd almost rather wait until after the TV series has ended before reading them.

Read the comics first. There's too much awesome that will be ruined by the series.

You don't have to and I'd just wait for the show. I love the GNs but the show has the potential to be better. Everyone I've told to read it have been put off by the gore. It's not constantly in your face but whenever they make a point to be violent, it gets REALLY REALLY graphic.

You might as well wait at this point. Everything will be a surprise if you wait and watch the show.

Hmm. I'm generally a much bigger fan of long form drama TV than I am of comics...but I'd recommend for you to read it anyway.

It's awesome, and we've been promised changes so it shouldn't be a retread of what we already know, more or less.

I'd say go for it.

Edit: I'm actually about to do a reread of the whole series very soon.

Thanks for the opinions.

I probably will end up waiting to read the series. But if the first season is as awesome as it appears to be, I'll probably break down and read them during the hiatus.

Awesome poster.

Picked up the first 5 hardback collections off Amazon last week, I'm already halfway through volume 3. Amazing, gripping stuff.

The Governor
is a great villain... really looking forward to
Michonne getting her inevitable revenge
. :D

Oh, that part is ridiculous. I'm curious if they'll do that part in the movies and how detailed they'll go. Parts of that just made me cringe. I remember reading a lot of really upset letters to Kirkman because of the subject matter and how ridiculously violent it was.

There's no way that scene can play out the same on the TV show. Which is fine, it doesn't have to be as graphic as in the comic.

Edit: And for the record, that scene didn't bother me. It was shocking, sure, but the comic is about gruesome things.

I agree, I don't think it'll play out exactly the same. Maybe have some of the same parts, but it won't be exactly the same.
That part with The Governor feeding his daughter human parts, oh man.. I wonder if they'll do that.

Just thinking about some of the stuff in the comic and how crazy it's going to be to with actors and awesome looking zombies.. It's going to be great. I also agree that the poster above looks awesome.

I could see the spoilered happening, sure. Not too crazy.
