Someone must have snuck all those pulp romance novels into my local library in secret, then.

I'm also fairly certain wanting to check his personal e-mail doesn't exactly make him a pursuer of academic knowledge so he really shot himself in the foot with that argument.

Whats up with all the smartass replies its becoming an annoying trend why reply if you dont care about the topic?

Anyway yeah we have this problem too in Australia although im not sure of anyway they could really fix it. I know some librarys blocked certain websites but its impossible to do that with everything. Plus the librarians were always too busy serving people to be able to do anything.
it's a NintendosBooger thread, so the joke responses are a given due to his status as a GAF joke character.

check his thread starting history...

What knowledge is being lost by not reading that sweet 16 y/o profile on facebook?

Yeah, and those Jews, socialists and democrats are all liars anyways, no harm in burning their books.

It´s just funny that in a country that holds free speech so dear some actually want public places to censor and block parts of possibly most free medium.

If you are willing to pay $5 a month to use a computer at the library, why not just go to an internet cafe?

That really depends on where you live. Not many internet cafes where I live (if any).

I haven't been to the White Oak library in 15 years. If there's a long crowd to use the internet, you can blame my dad as one of those people there. He retired a couple years ago and usually goes to that library to listen to his internet talk radio. He complains about the lines too and wanted me to get him a laptop w/ a wireless card so he can go to the library without waiting in line for internet. When I asked him why not just pay for cheap dial up internet access at home since he already has my old desktop PC, he balked.

Don't think you can stream anything on dial up

Few people ruin it for everyone. Not a new concept

I have the same problem at my collage, it can get a bit tough to find a computer on the first floor, the second floor has nothing but annoying to use terminal computers, and the 3rd floor has 4 general use computers, and a room that can be used publicly when its not being used for a class. But a lot of time, these still can fill up pretty fast.

I've done a little collage work myself and it's simpler than it sounds. Just cut out a picture of a computer and add it into your collage wherever you want. The great thing about it being your collage is you can add whatever elements you want anywhere you want. If that one fills up in your collage too..no problem, cut out and add another one.

Heh...sorry, I know you meant college but after I couldn't keep the idea of someone getting pissed that their collage was full out of my head.

A truly noble attempt at turning this into a "lol america" thread.

i've gotta agree that it makes me feel kind of weird that all my local libraries have become internet stations first, a place to read books a far distant second.

I agree with this. I like to get my work done there since I sometimes get stuck with an hour between class.

Get down to the library and all the computers are filled. About 50 or so. And what is it?
FORUM, MYSPACE, FACEBOOK, YOUTUBE, MUSIC, ETC.

Maybe 1 out of 10 are actually working and it's really bloody annoying.

A better question is, that if you need the internet so badly (not even mentioning what year it is) why don't you just get the internet at your place?...

I was there just last week because my home computer was acting up, and I had to wait 45 minutes to get on a machine to check and send e-mail and other important things.

DVD/VHS/CD take the 2nd spot, books are a distant last. Sad when you see people circumventing the 6 DVD limit by using multiple cards and that is all they are there for.

First tragedy, then farce.
My problem is the libraries free WiFi.

I live right next door to one (we share a parking lot with the library). Homeless people will show up at night to use the free wifi. They have cars and computers, but no house. So I go to take my dog out at night and there are 3-4 homeless people sleeping in their cars in our parking lot.

But yes, Libraries becoming internet stations really bother me. They need to block access to sites that aren't educational in nature. My library also hosts video game nights.. and they rent movies, CDs and books on tape.

I don't really have a huge issue with the books on tape because you can listen to them in the car, blind people, etc.

The rest really bother me though. It's not a free entertainment center, it's supposed to be for the betterment of the community through self education.

It's 2009 by the way. Who needs a computer to check email? Get a real phone, loser.

He was promised a better phone the next ski trip if his technique has improved by then.

You can, but for all but one of them you have to get on a waiting list and wait for like a freaking hour. There's only one computer dedicated to looking up books, which is annoying if I want to just look something up real quick.

god forbid you wait in line

there used to be only one catalog, in general.

I figured a guy like him, who wears nice suits to work while his coworkers dress in rags, would have a decent phone. Who knew?

I thought I would get some amusing stories about porn viewers in the library. Instead I get a guy complaining that free internet access is getting people into libraries who wouldn't otherwise consider going there. Big deal.

Agreed OP. My library is becoming the social cafe nightmare that you were describing. You know it's bad when the DVD and VIDEO GAME section takes up the first 2 floors, it is sickening. I don't care what anybody says, but there is no place for Video Games at a library! Sadly, I see more and more new games and vids, and less and less new books. It is really really sad!

This is all part of Obama's paradise initiative

Seriously though my library has the same issue with people hogging computers but I don't use them anyway im too busy raiding the comicbook/trade paper back section!

I spend an awful lot of time reading at the public library. I remember hearing a high school kid say to one of his friends "Why do people come here just to read?" :lol . . .=^(

Edit: btw, controlling what can be accessed at a library is a terrible idea. We hate it when countries like Iran try to limit access to social networking sites, why would be be any better to do it here?

Libraries aren't about education or academics, folks. Not solely.

Libraries are information AND culture. They are meant to serve as a resource for a wide variety of things including, yes, entertainment.

The internet at a library is not blocked because we do not live in some kind of dictatorial pro-censorship state. The purpose of the computer terminals at teh library is to give people access to computers who might not otherwise have it. That means access to WHATEVER they might need on a computer.

There are timelimits in place, and that is ALL you need. If the limitis are not being adhered to, take it up with the librarians. Just because you feel that your personal email is more important than some one else's myspace profile doesn't mean dick. If your email is SO important, then go get a working computer.

As for Libraries offering games and movies, that's no different from the trashy paperbacks that they have always offered. The fact that something is in book form doesn't automatically make it somehow magically educational or academic. There are PLENTY of books out there which have no value OTHER THAN pure entertainment. If it's okay for a Library to have those (and I believe it is) then there's nothing wrong with DVDs, and game nights, and other similar things.

Libraries are media repositories. Stop bitching about the fact that there is media in there.

Isn't the Library more like a pick up area these days? who the hell goes there for books in this day and age unless you were looking for something specific you don't want to waste money on via Amazon.

I used the local library for a while when I moved and didn't have internet hooked up at my house yet, and I used the library and other computer labs at college for pretty close to a year since I spent most of my time on campus anyway and it wasn't worth paying $50 a month or whatever it was for home access.

This asshole again?

Awwww, you feel that people other than you are being lazy. That you have more important things to do, and are therefore more entitled to time at publicly available machines. Well, you're obviously not important enough to afford a two hundred dollar netbook and elevate yourself above this pathetic lot.

Shut the fuck up. Next.

I'm grateful for it. It's one of the few arguing points Ohio Libraries have to our stupid ass Governor.

http://saveohiolibraries.com/

img06.jpg

Basically they're cutting funding by 50% which means a large amount of Ohio libraries will close (including the one I work at! bawwwwww). So everyone should write to the Ohio Governor and tell him to reconsider. Cause that always works :'( IT'S A GOOD CAUSE PEOPLE.

So in short, having free internet to the public to search for jobs that wouldn't have it otherwise is something patrons use all the time at my branch and brings in more people than would be there otherwise.

You and the rest of the clowns that are bringing up all the old shit must be fucking losers to remember the crap that I posted last year. Why don't you go outside, get a girlfriend, or experience something exciting to occupy your memory. Discuss the topic or GTFO, seriously.
