We had some more eclectic stuff lately, so I tried to look for some more quiet stuff now.

Aaron Larson - 2012 - hepburns, part I

Holy crap. How did you hear about Aaron??

Yep, what Gabbo said. We are not "hearing" anything about most of the artists we write about. I wrote a program that checks Bandcamp for releases depending on certain genres and whethers its free or paid. We then check the resulting list from that Bandcamp scraping and pick out the interesting ones.

It came up in one of the searches and I finally got around to write a review on it. Why so surprised?

Glad you got around to reviewing it (and enjoying it). They're even better live, and great guys to hang out with too. :)

One of the best recommendations I got this year, thanks again. This is great stuff. I was SO tempted to 5* it, but decided against it for objectivity reasons after talking about it with others.

I'd sure love to see them live, unfortunate that most of the bands we find are usually UK or US based.

That's cool, glad you liked it. They have a fantastic sound to them, I don't think I've met anyone yet who hasn't enjoyed their stuff!

Presenting the debut EP by my band Parachute for Gordo. Literally JUST released, you can be the hippest of the sters by getting in on this band now.

It was recorded live in a couple of hours and so isn't perfect but it is us, and I'm happy with it. It's pay whatever you want, so if you like it you can have it for free, and if you really like it then you can kick us a couple of quid. Half an hour, punk rock post rock, good times.

Very excited/nervous to be having this out in the wild!

Did you realize you got 2 tags on bc saying "experimental"? I assume one was supposed to be "instrumental"? (Does one still classify a song using these speeches as part of the song as instrumental? Its different than someone singing. More like another background noise.)

Oh and Gabbo? Already having your ears and fingers over it? ;) Sounds like a really nice record from first impressions.

Cheers man, means a lot to have other people hearing it. I didn't know about the tags, I'll have to fix that. Looks like the drummer got carried away with himself setting up the page! Although I think labelling us 'experimental' twice is kinda apt :P

And yep, I would def say we're instrumental, even though there is technically singing in there too (about 4 lines of it to be precise!). I don't think the samples count as 'words', I think they're texture.

Finally got to listen to this all the way through. Still debating a review for the blog, but it scratched the undying post-rock itch. I don't know if it's exceptionally 'experimental' necessarily, though you guys have obviously added a few tricks to the usual post rock bag, and it's really darn good. Heck you had me at the first audio clip, which is either all for show or a defining statement right at the outset (David Suzuki's daughter FYI).

How did you even find that audioclip?

Cheers man :) I found the clip on youtube, I think I was searching for children speaking and it came up. I found it interesting since it's 20 years old but could still be said today. There's something about the innocence of it that is very charming, and it fit perfectly in the space we had for it. In a way we agree wit hthe message, but for me it's more about the optimism of youth and also about how ineffectual environmental messages can be. After all, that was 20 years ago and nothing has really changed, so there's a bitter irony about it too.

If you review it let me know so I can crosspost it on our sites.

Great tread to pimp one of my friend's band: Al Berkowitz

- Pretty much impossible to classify into one single genre. They are really weird
- Influences from 70's rock, the Beatles, blues and brit pop, mixed with a hefty dose of electronic effects
- Utterly insane production levels
- It has some psicotropic, aural feeling which kinda evokes videogame music at some points

Download their latest album here for free! (just put "0" when asked about the price of the purchase)

Recommended tracks:

Father I think I was wrong
The Frenchman and The Rabbitman
Sensitive, not dramatic
Magical cynical

Will certainly let you know if I do. And yeah, I can see what you're saying about the clip (youtube, the great equalizer).

Nice. And I second your recommendations; I Want You (Out of Control) is also a nice little rocker but it doesn't go very far or really fit with the rest of the album. But if the rest of the album is too subdued that'd probably still be a good listen.

Are there any good Post-Rock bands?

What I consider good: God is an Astronaut, Mono, The Seven Mile Journey and This Will Destroy You.

I've only heard Mono and This Will Destroy You, of those four, so these recommendations may not be exactly what you're looking for, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.
A little post-rock variety for your ears to try out:

Depatures
Renaissance Sound
Ektoise (Kiyomizu specifically, but they're all excellent)
blackset

Sad to see Sutil have taken their page down after their back and forth with free/pay. Was a funky record.

Saw the top 15 post above the Deer Legs post? Makes me a bit warm and fuzzy inside.

It reads like the last few months of the blog and one or two alternate album from bands we reviewed. We're getting out there. it warms the depths of the heart it does.
