This boss omfg. My build was flawless for every other npc [they couldnt do anything!], but for boss it was almost useless lol. I cant even imagine how to defeat him on normal o_0

Definitely addicted already. Wishing I had brought my laptop to work so I could play this, lol

Yep, the game also makes me want to hunt out all those achievements. Will keep me busy for a while I guess.

My best helper was a heavy attack drone (and 4 basic shots). Helped me to get down even the 4 shield boss. I couldnt repair myself in between the next boss fight though and got helplessly massacred then :(

This is a cool game. Though challenging for sure. Not sure I've really worked out a strategy yet, my better runs seem to be down to luck mostly so far.

Does anyone know if you're more likely to pick up crew members of a certain race in one of their controlled zones? Or are you just more likely to run into a certain enemy type. I really want some more ships/configurations and I need alien crew members for those events/achievements.

Yeah I agree with that. In Binding of Isaac, there was a huge amount of luck for sure, but how you "spent" that luck made a big difference - usually for the better. Going straight for powerup rooms, spending bombs finding secret rooms, using hearts/armor on sacrifice rooms...those all affected the playthroughs a lot. So far, with FTL, it's been "should I spend this scrap now, or save it for a shop".

Another question: is there any benefit to actually completing an escort quest? You get some reward for it immediately, I know. But when when you actually get to the quest site, it seems just like a normal event. You don't get any significantly better rewards for completing it, do you?

Got to the third or fourth galaxy in my first try, any tips what I should focus on with my weapons and what to upgrade? Shield seemed like a good thing to do but I never got past the standard starting weapons and was always out of money when I got to a shop :/

Edit: Or are there any sites with some helpful stuff? Couldn't figure out what to do with the drone parts e.g.

I think they're more likely to be store recruitable in their zones, but many of the events you're mentioning are also exclusive to said zones as well.

It just depends, sometimes you get an extra reward, sometimes a shop, sometimes a fight.

For the drone parts, you need a "Drone Controller" system on your ship, which has 2 slots for different Drone Schematics. Launching one of the drones from the controller costs a drone part.

I got no advice for you though, since I've barely gotten to sector 4 and also seem to run low on money. I'm going back and watching some of The Idle Thumbs Saturday Morning Live Stream from a few weeks ago to see how Chris was playing. One good tip I've picked up so far is not bothering to repair your ship to 100%, since there are repair events and also if you're gonna get blown up, an extra 10% health wont help you that much.

It completely depends on which ship you start with.

With the first ship - layout B, I didnt upgrad anything on my ship up to sector 4 and did pretty well, only buying stuff from the shops.

With my current ship, I NEED more ion weapons/drones to start so I'll probably restart the game until I find a drone/extra ion weapon in the first store.

And with the first ship - layout A, I didnt buy anything in shops at all and got pretty far... *shrugs* All just depends on what you have currently.

Thanks, I pobably should just play a little bit around anyways to figure some stuff out, it's a rogue-like afterall.

I think it being too luck-based is the biggest issue, but it's still rather fun to retry.

Yeah, luck definitely plays a big part. Remember though bliz, sometimes luck works out for you in a big way. I'm glad there are interesting achievements. Those'll add some replay value to it once I finally get to the end. I think the dev is also working on a mode that'll let you fight tougher and better equipped ships post game until you bite it.

This game is worth the price for sure, but boy is it hard. The most intense battle was against some slugs where my o2 was disabled and they were planning on using fire bombs. All power to weapons and drones and won with 51 oxygen.

I'm having a hard time noticing if putting more than one crew member in a room makes any difference in recharge times or stats, so maybe you dudes can answer that for me instead.

Only one dude can help the stats at a time, but more than one dude can repair at the same time.

You guys recommend to buy it from the developer's site right? It's DRM Free and Steam Redeemable?

Yep.

Only one crewmember is used when determining bonuses for occupying one of the station rooms (engines, weapons, navigation, sheilds). Any more is just excess unless you are repairing.

Once you start getting 6 crew members you should seriously think about getting a teleporter and capping ships.

Which also gives more scraps and might have a higher chance of getting weapons.

On another note: Unlocked my 3rd ship and layout B of my second ship in the same run! Woo!

Totally random: I just had an Engi called Notch.

Me too. He died pretty quickly :p I guess naming characters was part of the kickstarter rewards?

Might just be a random gaming joke. Wouldnt be too surprising of Indie devs to call a char "Notch".

Anyone successfully played the stealth ship yet? How does that work? It doesnt even have a shield and half of the time you are uncloaked..

Against Toma's advice I tried it out, played through the tutorial - definitely seems like something I'm up for.

Itching to play more of it and get my little crew people out into space, but I can't, I can't.. :(

The tutorial itself is rather tame , but the main game will immediately grab its hooks into you. Then you notice you can unlock new classes/ships that play differently by working towards some achievements and THEN you are doomed. Cant stop playing this damn game.

The only thing missing is a Steam Friends Leaderboard. An addon with a few new ships/galaxy designs/random events and races would be awesome too.

Yeah I think there was a reward tier to name NPCs. Although they do usually come from special missions.
Like I've found 'Scoops' and 'Nick Breckon' on missions.

I was pretty close to finally unlocking layout B.
Then my expert shield technician died in an asteroid field right before reaching a store.

Oh god yeah, happened to me too. Layout B is totally worth it though. From the 3 ships I have so far, Ship 1- Layout B is the strongest in my opinion. I can get to sector 4 without upgrading anything on that ship.

The "6 aliens" was the last one I did I think. The repair achievement was super easy and I got the third one even before that.

At the moment I kinda wish you'd get more scrapmetal for upgrading and buying, I'm even playing at easy but it still feels like getting upgrades and weapons is to slow of a process.

Played it for a bit maybe it to sector 4 or so, the lack of a shield isn't that big a deal if you get some upgrades to your cloak but seems really annoying at the first sector

That is sort of the reason I think easy should be normal and "normal" should be hard. The reward/progression on easy is the perfect line between challenge and rewards for me.

You can get more scraps by invading enemy ships btw, so if you want more, you might want to try that feature.

Can you give me an example how your fights are supposed to be with that ship? Sort of like:

1. Fire your first missile
2. Put up shield after enemy shot his missile
3. Fire second missile
4. ...

etc. I cant seem to understand how that ship is supposed to work.

Definitely requires a different play style early on. Take advantage of your long range sensors and avoid asteroid fields, they will wreck you without shields. In combat you'll want to generally cloak the enemies first salvo and respond with laser and beams which in the beginning should be enough to drop shields and disable weapons/helm/shields depending on enemy configuration. Don't underestimate the beam weapon, you can do up to 4 damage in a single shot if you aim it properly. Don't be surprised if you take 2-4 damage an encounter early on. If your hull starts to get low you may need to start avoiding ships as well. If you find stealth weapons at a store I highly recommend picking it up, trade in the titanium plating if you have to. Other than that be frugal and save for shields. You can divert energy early on from engines to power them.

Well the way I played it was

1. Fire all weapons
2. Wait for enemy to fire and cloak
*repeat*

If you get the upgrade to your cloak to make it 15 seconds and allow you to shoot while cloaked it's not too difficult, you basically have 15 seconds to do some damage unopposed

Thanks, that should help a bit. That last upgrade mentioned would be awesome of course, but no guarantee you'll see it in a stealth playthrough so I'll try not to bet on it.

Just beat the final boss for my first time on easy mode. Only took around 6 tries (>_>).

Going into it I thought I had no chance as I was fairly tanky and didn't think I'd have enough to do damage through his shield. Had to time volleys so they matched with my drones; also had a boarding party of 1 mantis to take out the weapons, makes it much easier since the weapon rooms can't be reinforced!

Best $9 I've spent in a while I think!

Toma

How can I avoid damage during a cloak for the stealth ship achievement? When cloaked, the ships dont shoot at me and dont shoot anything that makes damage. If I start the stealth mode AFTER the enemy shot, the cloak doesnt work.
