Fuck Xbox One's Disconnecting Controllers And Frustrating Inability To Fix It

There are so many things people recommend, like:
Get a new controller
Have no wifi devices near the system (lol what? come on. This is not an acceptable solution, and it doesn't work anyway)
Update the system
Update the controller
Use different batteries
Enter the beta test program or whatever it's called

Did I get them all? Because none of this works.

No, you didn't get all of them. I had to get a new console, that fixed the problem.

I haven't had it happen once since the patch they put out to fix it.

I haven't either.

Well, twice, maybe, but I consider that an enormous win when it would have disconnected dozens of times before the firmware update. And in the last week I don't think it's cut out at all.

Anybody call or chat with MS and inquire about this?
I'd talked with them via chat and over the phone. All they basically did for me was took me through the steps you can already find on their website. They offered to swap the controller for me via warranty but I decided against it and just plugged the damn thing in. I've read too many stories about this and plugging it in really isn't a big deal for me.

I just want to know if the people who are having trouble with this live in apartments and/or use regular batteries.

I use regular batteries and live in an apartment.

My Xbox One is wired not wireless.

I have noticed that regular batteries don't seat well in the controller and often have to be popped back into place and I have thought about getting rechargeable since they seem to hold contact better.

Also, in apartment I suspect that the multiple wireless signals could be interfering.

This is pretty weird.

I got the XBO since launch, hsve 4 controllers, all bought on different dates and never experienced nothing like this.

My bet would also be wireless interference from a crowded air space.

I live in a house and your right about batteries not seating, I have a plug and charge kit and never get disconnections but now you say that I do remember the pad used to disconnect because the battery's came loose

You could put some paper against the battery's and the plastic to hold it in place i would guess

I have this problem. I've had my XB1 since release, and I don't think I started experiencing disconnects until 6-8 months ago. I have 3 different controllers, all will disconnect at times.

With system updates, the disconnect frequency has reduced, but it still happens.

This is happening to me all the time now. Used to think it was a specific game (mainly did it during FIFA 15, which is probably the worst game to be playing when a controller cuts out!) but it seems to now be a few.

Really frustrating. Tried to limit the wifi/bluetooth signals in and around where the xbox is but still no joy.

I do have paper in there, but it still happens from time to time.

I have dropped my controller on a hard wood floor and have never had the batteries come loose. Using both name brand and cheap store brand AA.

Happened to my xbox as well, had to send it to Microsoft to get it fixed. I should just sell this I rarely play Xbox One.

I swear this issue is frustrating me so much that I seriously want to just sell my Xbox One.

I don't understand how anyone could bear it for more than one day.

Its the controller. The most important part of actually playing games

Its similar to the ps4 ejecting issue. It's weird that ppl have patience for things like this

It's not a small issue. Mines been better sine update. Not perfect but better. Hopefully they can fix it permanently.

My thought is that it ha something to do with the fact that I live in apartment and could be getting interference from the multitude of WiFi signals.

Either way, the issue was non-existent with my PS4, PS3 and 360.

Well goddamn fucking shit.

I bought the MS certified rechargeable batteries for my Xbox One controllers. I was VERY hopeful that the disconnecting issues were being caused by the regular batteries not being secure.

But no, I still get the occasional disconnect.

God I hate this crap.

Still an issue.. still unacceptable.. and judging by the 2000 replay thread on the official forums with no official word we might be SOL.

We need to somehow make more noise...not sure how but something has to be said. This happened to me about 5 times last night in multiple games.

i dont know if this is at all true or applicable but do you guys have a land line wireless telephone? alot of the older ones are 2.4Ghz and maybe it's causing interference. Try messing around with it and see if it makes any difference.

i actually have an older wireless landline telephone that can completely kill channel 1 band on a wifi network.

I had this very issue on my day one console. It started disconnecting after 1 month on both 2 controllers. I sent my console back to MS for and exchange and its not happened again. If it's not the controller itself then its definitely the console based on my experience anyway.

i dont have a telephone.
Bummer.

Do you realize that the 2.4 GHz band is universally used by a bunch of devices using wireless communications?

Bluetooth uses it. WiFi uses it. Toys use it. Intercom systems use it. RF remotes use it.
And cherry on the top, microwave ovens may interfere with it.

Funny how most of these devices find their way through this frequency band, and work correctly without interfering (too much) with each others.
If interferences are what's causing disconnects with the xbox controller, there's probably something wrong in the way it's been designed...

Does anyone know what the cause is, last night while playing destiny, it was going crazy for like 10 min. on off on off..........

Why are we not getting on MS? Why are they getting a pass?

Hmmm, I've read the whole thread and only saw one person mention something similar and I think that was also with Destiny. I only have experience of the ps4 version of the game, but I do know it has some fairly elaborate anti-idle stuff going on in there (you can't just stick rubber bands around the sticks to prevent being booted to orbit, you need a programmable device to issue more varied and irregular inputs). That might be why this game in particular, more so than others, highlights any connectivity issues that might be present. Not massively useful information, but using Destiny as a method to exacerbate the problem might help in countering it.
And at this point I'd say that's probably all Destiny is good for, after falling down that hole for well over 1000 hours last year...
Would be interested to know if the OP is having better luck now after his friend changed the wireless channel.

Was there ever an update on this?

my controller started doing it pretty much after i commented on this thread saying it didnt!!

the only addition to my house is my pro surface 3, but i have to have my plug and charge kit plugged in if i want to ensure i have a none disconnection experience now

Still happening for me too, it's killing any interest I have in even turning my X1 on any more.

I had seven drops during Life is Strange over the weekend. Seven. This shit is unacceptable...

Happens so often it is just part of playing on the x1 now.... Sucks but its my preferred platform... I just want people to continue to bitch at ms.

I've had it happen a few times. It's not been a major issue for me though.

What's more annoying is my Kinect randomly turning itself on and off... Oh, and the fact that sometimes my Xbox just refuses to shut down and will sit there with the light pulsating on and off. That shit is infuriating.

I've had this problem with our Day One edition controller. Really annoying at times. I'll have to try the update, it even happens when plugged into the XBONE.

The worst part isn't the small number of people that are affected by this, it's that we haven't heard a response from MS about the issue. That's what bothers me the most. At least come out and talk about what's happening to this handful of people so that we understand why the disconnects happen in the first place. Hey, maybe even from there the couple hundred or so customers can use that as a work around to fix it.

I have.. 3? 4 controllers now?

(mentally counts.. Day One, Extra Controller, Titanfall, Armed Forces..)

Okay, 4 controllers. The Day One came with the console, I bought a 2nd one for all those couch co-op games (sigh), and then got the Titanfall controller when it came out, and finally got the Armed Forces one because green camo is cool.

I didn't have any issue with the first two controllers, I had gotten a set of eneloop AA's and use them almost exclusively. No issues.

Around Christmas or so I got the Nyko rechargeable batteries + stand. These had a solid battery piece that went in the back, along with a custom battery cover to allow for charging. I used these in my Extra black Controller without issue. When I got my Titanfall controller I noticed that the Nyko battery pack would not fit in the controller, the backplate would not line up correctly. I ended up switching the eneloops to the Titanfall controller.

First issue, the Titanfall controller would randomly turn off, especially during multiplayer Titanfall battles. VERY annoying. Through much trial and error I realized that the controller shell was 'giving' and flexing much more than my other controllers, which was apparently causing the batteries to lose connection for a moment. This typically happened when I was getting my A&# kicked and squeezing the ever-loving-life out of the controller.

Second issue, at some point the Nyko battery packs ran out of juice, as I wasn't putting them on the charging stand (I'm terrible about that) so I went to pop the eneloops in.. and they didn't fit. The Nyko battery pack had somehow expanded the connectors in the controller to the point where normally batteries don't work anymore. Kind of sucks, but thankfully the battery packs still work.

I've been using random rechargable and regular batteries in the Armed Forces controller and haven't had any disconnects or other issues thankfully.

I had it happen everytime I put in a certain pair of Eneloop batteries. Have three pair and two pair were fine. One pair would start this behavior immediately after inserting, fairly often.

Dropped that pair out of rotation and no problem. Knock wood.

It happens to me constantly in certain games. I've started buying more games on PS4 now, knowing I won't have to put up with that shit any more.

It's happened once to me since the console launched; it has to be environmental. It sucks that you guys have that issues though.

This happens to me on both of my controllers pretty regularly. It's really fuckin annoying and has got me killed in plenty of games, too. I wish Microsoft would at least acknowledge that it's still a problem. I'm super worried that Rock Band controllers are going to do it when RB4 launches....

I have this happen every now and again, feels like it happens when I sit with my legs up on a stool or something and the controller is sitting on my lap, but I don't see why my legs would block the line of sight so easily.

Also one of my controllers reacts as if the analogue stick is stuck in the upward position. Touching the stick will fix it for a little while, but it doesn't stay in neutral. The stick itself isn't stuck or anything, is there something I can do to reset this?

I haven't had the controller turn off yet, thankfully, but like you my Kinect turns itself off all the time now. It started about a month ago, steadily increasing in frequency until the point it's at now - which is, it turns off and reconnects every 4-5 minutes. Leaving it pretty much useless. I bought my console last June. Do these things have a 12 month warranty? I'd send it in only if it cost nothing, otherwise I couldn't be bothered.

I still deal with this issue and have since day one.

I do not live in an apartment complex, but a standard housing addition.

The issue has to be with other wireless devices and the controller possibly changing frequency/channel of the 2.5ghz signal in the middle of using it. My console is wired, though I have a wireless network. I have tried everything from disabling my wireless network, to changing the channel of my network with no luck. It seems to go in spurts. The console sits in the exact same spot my Xbox 360 used to sit with zero issues. I did swap out my original Xbox One with a new one at the local Microsoft Store, and all this did was seem to give me more range with the controller but still had the random disconnection issues. In a few hours of play I will typically see one or two disconnects, though some nights nothing. I also notice moments where the controls seem unresponsive (example being when I turn in a game it keeps turning for a split second after I stop), but it doesn't always completely disconnect.

It's frustrating playing a multiplayer game and you start walking into a wall going "oh crap oh crap" realizing the controller has just disconnected and you are fair game to everyone else. I even purchased a second controller... same issue.

I've given up solving the problem (and yes I updated the firmware on the controllers) and just hope one of these days they fix it.

I'm not sure if it's a small number of people. I have a friend who is also experiencing this issue

Yeah, same thing here.
