Future Shop Canada stores now closed

I'm all for sympathizing with the loss of a Canadian name/business brand and for any folks who'll lose a job, but man, there's absolutely no way I'd ever go to a FS over BB.

Everyone I know would agree with me. FS was trash. Filled with terrible employees (based on my numerous experiences), lack of product knowledge, and I always seemed to have a great deal of administrative trouble with anything besides a straightforward purchase (I.e. Trade ins, returns, or preorders- fuck their garbage preorder system online and the inability to change any details after the order is placed. And forget about ever getting your shipment on time ...and I'm in Toronto no less!)

Best Buy was sadly, a revelation when it showed up (whenever that was...like 10 years ago?).

Sorry guys, can't relate to many of the sad posts in the thread. FS has just plain sucked for almost everyone I know and for me. Again, sympathizing with job losses, but otherwise, good riddance.

And yes, I'm well aware they were essentially the same company and all, but I suspect the policy and training rule books were much better at BB. I was always dealing with someone totally slimy, or apathetic, or completely clueless at almost any FS I went to.

Just curious where you're located as I always found the opposite where I am?

Sorry, skipped over the Toronto bit.

Well, thats depressing. Futureshop always had a better store layout than Bestbuy, and their stores looked more Modern. Here in Windsor, we have a Best Buy and a Future Shop literally right across from Best Buy in the same parking lot and they both do really well. Its a shame they are close down all the stores.

A shame. I hate best buy, their stores are so sterile and lifeless. I have so many good memories of last gen console launches gears of war 3 launch at futureshop with friends.
I would have preferred they just close the futureshop stores in close proximity to best buy

I fear for them continuation of the E3 yearly promos.

i will be truly disappointed if that goes away. i know amazon only did it to match the FS/BB deal

With the dollar not in such a great shape Best Buy can't expect people to preorder expensive games without a more significant discount than before. Things are getting more expensive but wages aren't meeting that change as far as I know. June is going to be a very interesting month. Will Best Buy keep continue E3 sale? Will Amazon follow suite? Will EB Games or someone else do the same to stay competitive in the Canadian market?

Another Canadian business bites the dust. The federal election this year is going to be very interesting.

Canadian Poli-GAF is going to have a field day. Canuck GAF at large will I suppose.

Oh man, that really sucks, but I suppose they really did eat into each other's sales. For some reason, you always find one close by wherever the other is. And it's a good thing I did my preorders with BB for the points, though I think I have a few with FS anyways.

Edit: Looks like I just have SMT x Fire Emblem with them.

I bought an item from futureshop.ca and I can no longer access the website, are you going to fulfill the order?

Yes, all outstanding orders placed on futureshop.ca will be fulfilled.

anyone know what's going to happen with the Vancouver FS locations?

Broadway is right beside my house, and I go to DT a lot too, technically there's a Best Buy close buy at Cambie, so I'm worried they'll close both of them

So is all of Canada getting wrecked economically right now or is it just the East Coast?

I love this country and don't want to leave, but I'd hate to be in a situation where everything is closing down and jobs become even harder to find.

More people looking for jobs, while less and less jobs become available. It's not a fun time to be unemployed in Canada right now.

Hey don't panic. ive just received a email from Future Shop Saying that my e3 preorder will be honored by Best Buy. I can check the status online as well on Futureshop.ca

Go to the BB website and use the store locator. Any FS locations that are being re-branded should look like this.

I'm putting money on the Robson & Granville location being converted into Best Buy. From what I've heard, it's one of their "AAA" stores that's in a key location that sees a ton of traffic from locals and tourists. My local Park Royal store in West Van might not make it, though. They might want to keep the Marine Dr. store open instead.

Thanks! So, it looks like Robson & Granville and Park Royal are going to be operated by Best Buy. Both the Marine Dr. and Broadway stores do not appear in the map.

Not surprised, even though I though Sears would disappear before them.

Sears has no debt and plenty of cash... So pretty much like RIM/BBRY before it tanked.

To be fair the movies out last week and this week aren't exactly blockbusters...

Well, that is a part of the problem. If there are no blockbusters out for a majority of the year, how can Cineplex justify stadium-sized theatres?

Having an effective near monopoly on the movie theater market for new releases helps, I'd figure.

On topic, I was shocked to hear this, but at least my local one is staying intact. Sucks as hell for the economy, between the Oil Fields laying off, Target closing, and this I can bet that we'll be seeing a heavy focus on the economy.

Looks like the Orleans one is becoming a Best Buy.

Only 2 of the 5 here in Ottawa are closing:

CBC Ottawa (@CBCOttawa) tweeted at 11:24 AM on Sat, Mar 28, 2015:
@FutureShop says stores in Kanata and on Merivale Rd. will close. Orleans, South Keys, Barrhaven stores become Best Buy.

Didn't notice there was a bigger thread here on the gaming side. I'm going to cross post a few thoughts.

Best Buy has been scaling back in the USA for a few years, and this is tied to that. Best Buy is in trouble, as there's less and less reason for anyone to go to a big box store when there's better options out there. I believe we'll continue to see Best Buy downsize over time.

Looking at what Best Buy/Future Shop does:

CDs&BlueRay - basically dead due to streaming, Amazon
Computers - Apple Store & direct buy from Lenovo/HP/Dell websites.
Mobile Phones - Apple Store, various cellular company stores
Headphones - Apple Store, Various drug stores, Amazon
PC Parts - NewEgg, etc
Games - I dunno. Tough competition from Amazon and Walmart. I've always preferred to buy Games from Best Buy over Gamestop. Game sales moving to PC and digital download as well...

In the "Best Buy still main place" category:

TVs - How often do folks buy TVs really?
Home Stereo - pretty niche, to be honest.

Damn, saw this coming got a while, they closed down a bunch of them here in mtl.

I still can't believe that they closed the Atwater store instead of the old crappy Saint Catherine one. They even closed the one at Cote Vertu... I guess online shopping is the way to go for these corporations now...

Our FS here in Medicine Hat was one of the most profitable in Canada, so it's no surprise that without much other brick and motar competition that it'll be converted into a Best Buy. I'm looking forward to the change as Best Buy seemed to have a bit more variety in stock, at least that's what I've gathered from comparing the two online.

So glad that preorders are being carried over - still had three games preordered from E3 two years ago.

There's a sign on the Future Shop in my city saying it'll reopen as a Best Buy on April 4th, which I think is pretty sudden. Maybe they're not going to do many renovations before re-opening.

New uniforms + new signage. There's probably nothing major they need to change.

I also want to remark that Future Shop's customer service has consistently been horrid based on my personal experience. My local stores are based near Vancouver.

Their sales associates rarely picks up the phone, and if they do, there were several occasions when I was put on hold for extended periods of time and disconnected while being transferred to a department. I never bother to call their stores anymore.

I've observed they also spend most of their time chatting amongst themselves or pushing their ridiculous Product Service Plans when trying to make a sale.

I worked at a Future Shop in Washington state during their brief venture into the US and it was one of the worst experiences of my life. Boy, where to begin.

It was commission only, so there were many times where I worked a full eight hour day and didn't earn a cent. Not only that, but the commission was based on gross margin, so if they reduced the price on something, you could sell it, and you still wouldn't earn anything. Because of this, all the sales people knew what had the best margins and would steer people towards them. Nothing they recommended could be trusted because of this. I can't blame them though, they had to try to make something. Accessories and extended warranties had the biggest margins so those would always get the hard sell.

It gets worse. They expected salespeople to stay late and unload merchandise from trucks UNPAID. This was illegal of course, and eventually they were driven out of the country because of lawsuits.

I realized I made a huge mistake and had to get out of there, but they heavily implied that they would try to charge us for the few days they put us up in a hotel for training if we didn't stay for a certain (undetermined) amount of time. I had to lie to my manager and say I had to go home because my father had a heart attack, or else risk being fined into homelessness.

So yeah, not gonna miss Future Shop.

I didn't know Future Shop expanded to the US. Must've been in the early 2000's. I remember the Corporate HQ which was in Burnaby, BC was gonna become a mega Future Shop, as right now the entire area is being bulldozed for new condo's around Metrotown. Guess BB didn't see the the point. BB as a whole is also in danger of becoming another Circuit City in the US. If it weren't for the GCU, all my shopping woulf be with amazon.com. I'll probably only buy consoles and TV's therr, as I wouldn't trust amazon to deliver a $5000 TV or console through Canada Post or USPS.

I had a good time at my local Future Shop, never had any issues with their customer service. I'll miss them but I'm pretty sure that they'll be coming back as a Best Buy.

That's the one close to my work. Glad that is sticking around.

Did your friend mention how fast the brand switch will be?

He had to respond to dozens of people checking in on him so I didn't bother him, but we've all heard the standard company line since.

What bothers me is that they are closing Futureshop stores that aren't even near a Best buy.

It makes sense to close one when they are practically right next to each other since it was stupid to locate them that near in the first place. But now I've gone from having a store that was fairly convenient for me that I would drop by on a regular basis to pretty much nothing since the only Best buy in town is on the outer edge and far enough away to be a total pain in the ass to reach.

It was really nice being able to order something and being able to drop at the store to pick it up. Came in real handy when hunting for toys like Skylanders and Amiibo. And of course what am I going to do about getting street passes now without a easy to get to relay nearby?

Not to sound too salty or mean, I feel for those who need to find work, but FS never had a good reputation in these parts. I got screwed out of a limited edition pre-order once, they didn't seem to care they screwed up, that was enough to make me not want to come back. Personally I think BB taking charge is the best way to go.

I live afew blocks from the DT location. No way is that one closing for good. It's too key of a location, and gets tons of traffic.

I have friends who worked at the Broadway location.

They were all fired, except for one of the managers who was transferred to Robson. The Broadway store's definitely closed.

You could set up Home Pass, if you don't care about using "illegitimate" means of getting Street Passes (and like filling up Japanese map data).

I have no idea, but I assume almost all the corporate/employee policies are going to be identical.

The non-stop dumping on Canada in terms of retail and prices is getting to be pretty sad. Hope things work out for everyone involved.
