Posted again for the second page.

Cosmic Bus - I like how you captured the emotion of the moment
joshschw - just seems like a fun picture overall, very theatric to me

First - Cosmic Bus - It just seems so real and genuine, and nicely executed. I wasn't sure about the off-center composition at first, but now it really works for me and suits the emotion.

Runner Up - LRS - I like how there is a sense of stillness, and yet a sense of motion implied in the shadows of the leaves.

Comments for all...as usual, it's just my opinion:

hey_monkey - So cute! But the shine of the flash makes it a little snapshot-like for me.

Bear-tie - Lovely, but was it taken during the assignment period?

SexyNerd - Most ingenious entry, but why clip off the top of the finger?

Bliany - I love the character of the dog, the lighting, and the way his fur falls into soft focus, but yeah, it might have been better having the eyes a little more in focus, and I'm not sure about the off-center composition.

sankt-Antonio - I like the crispness and definition, but whatever you did adjusting the color makes it a little unnatural for me.

sarcastor - Great dog, but the mid-day lighting and lack of background control bring it down a notch.

Memles - Nice kitty, but the tilt doesn't do a lot for me.

Tf53 - Well done, but there's only so much you can do with the moon by itself with no other compositional elements.

aidan - Ooooh, I almost voted for this, but I think I want that one eye to be in sharper focus. Great lighting and mood.

joshschw - I like it a lot, but I would have cropped it a bit tighter on the left to match the tight framing on the right.

neoism - Almost spooky cute, love those eyes!

Papi - Nice moment and I like the composition, but the lighting seems a little weak.

SquirrelKiller - I totally don't get it.

fart - I think composing tighter on the head alone with its dramatic lighting would have worked better for me.

My shot - It was a bit of a tricky lighting situation with the pup coming from the bright end of the pen looking into the shadowed end, and I consider it to be more of an image that was "rescued" in photoshop, but the moment and the expression made it worthwhile for me.

1 LRS
2 bear-tie
(since iam not shure how the wheather conditions are in the us ... ill vote for you, if the picture is not legit this vote does not count, it loks hell of a lot like it was taken in autumn , but again i have no idea)
3 cosmic bus

edit:

i really like lucky forwards posts in these threads, its very cool to have an opinion on all the pictures...
if only my englisch was better... :(

bear-tie's photo was uploaded to Flickr on October 30, 2008.

Since I tend to be the one tallying the votes, here's how I would handle your vote. (If you want me to handle your vote differently, feel free to change it.) LRS would get 3 points, bear-tie would get 1 point, and Cosmic Bus would get 0 points. In the final tally, if bear-tie were to end up with the most points, I would note the apparent rule violation and let the community come to a collective agreement as to who should start the next thread (the only time that I can think a DQ'ed entry won was #16, and everyone agreed that the person with the second most points won.)

Aww, that's a shame. Bear-tie's photo sure is pretty.
Yes, but as it's been said here many times before, the point of the assignments isn't to comb through your archives but to go out and shoot.

First: Lucky Forward - I can't resist! Too cute. Shots like this are why I chose 'Faces' rather than 'Portraits'. Watching Bear grow up is going to be a blast.

Second: Squirrel Killer - Again, another clever take on the theme. I like how the shadows make the electrical sockets look almost sad. I would have liked a bit more emphasis on them, though. The shoes don't really serve a purpose.

HMs/Comments:

SexyNerd - Cool take on the theme. If the top finger weren't cut off, it may have earned a vote from me.

Bliany - Great choice for B&W. The dog has tons of character.

LRS - Very evocative. I don't dig the sideways composition.

Memles - The cat's right eye freaks me out!

joshschw - Lots of fun! It would have been nice to see the saturation dropped a bit, or to replicate an old-time photo feel. As it is, it feels a little anachronistic.

Ack! I know. It was a toss up between this one (with slightly better tone/composition/facial expression) and another similar shot that was a bit better in focus. I shot this hand-held, around a campfire at 11:30 at night, so I was just happy it wasn't a blurry mess!

Thanks to everyone who voted for me!

It's creepy, no? My favourite game is to cover half of its face with one hand - one side is completely normal, it's only the other where the mouth/eye are screwed up. The two-faced nature of the cat was what led me to the submission over numerous other options (I have a bit of a thing for close-up portrait shots, so there were plenty to choose from).

First Choice: LRS - The interplay of light with the subject's face adds a lot to this image.

Runner Up: joshschw - There's so much joy and earnestness on their faces that I can't help but want to join them.

Honorable Mentions:
hey_monkey - Great close up portrait that gives just enough context to make it relatable.

Cosmic Bus - I agree with AlternativeUlster, this needs to be a book cover. This image is this odd contrast between raw emotion and obvious staging.

Other Comments:
Bear-tie - Wonderful portrait.

SexyNerd - Love the whimsy.

Lucky Forward - Awww... lookitthelittlepuppy! Totally makes me want one too.

Bliany - Worked out neat as a counter-point to Lucky Forward's entry, but stands on its own. You can read a doogie's life of experience on his face.

sankt-Antonio - Striking image, but killing the red and green channels gives it an odd look. There's not a whole lot of contrast there. Did you try the channel mixer?

sarcastor - Earnest little guy. Hard light makes this look a little snapshoty.

Memles - I was about to write this entry off but I went back and re-read your comments when you submitted it. Interesting subject and interpretation, but it's so subtle that it almost takes you asserting it to be a serious entry before one accepts that there's more to the image than the initial glance indicates.

Tf53 - Very nice image, wish I had captured it myself.

aidan - Great lighting. I know in the equipment thread there was some debate about the usefulness of wide aperatures (especially as a justification for buying L lenses) but your settings (f/1.8, ISO 1600) show what shooting so wide open can achieve. My favorite pictures of my wife's sisters were shot the same way at a very poorly lit wedding reception.

neoism - Amazing eyes, but unlike hey_monkey's entry, there's so little expression and context that it's hard to relate to the subject.

Papi - Great background for such a candid shot.

fart - Not sure why you don't like this, nice separation, interesting subject, hard lighting which highlights the intricate details... Yeah, maybe there's the old "art of art" discussion, but I think your image bring enough new to the sculpture that it's not too much of an issue.

evanylee - Shit. We've got competition boys and girls. ;)

I see where you're coming from, but I felt the image without anything else in it didn't really stand on its own other than as a joke shot.

Random trivia:
- There are 53 muscles in the human face. The platitude that it take more muscles to frown than smile is a matter of dispute, and, according to a facial reconstruction surgeon asked by Cecil Adams for his The Straight Dope column, probably wrong. (By his account, it takes 11 muscles to frown, 12 to smile.)

Congratulations to Cosmic Bus on his second win!

NeoGAF Photo Assignment Threads FAQ

Thank you for the votes, everyone. I'd like to hand over creation of a new assignment to LRS, if that's alright; I've PM'd him to see if he'd be interested.
