GAF Votes FOTY 2012 Thread: Fail Of The Year

Doritosgate - not because of Keighley, but everything else that happened around it at the same time. "Mountain Dew is iconic of that demo" on Weekend Confirmed gets my nod for the most out of touch line of the year.

And this was a US election year.

Even though ME3 ending was such a letdown for me (albeit it was fixed later with the EE DLC), out of sheer impact on the industry, FOTY goes to Doritosgate scandal. My god, I knew gaming press was "off", but this was down right disgusting to watch.

It's not 2010 anymore, can we change it from fail to failure? Pretty please?

My choice is Polygon/ie doc/arthur gies tattoo in dramatic lighting.
Eh, there are much more egregious errors in the opinion universe, such as "If I'm honest," "addicting," "could care less" and Michael Pachter.

Vita, Silicon Knights and Resident Evil 6.

Vita for its sales, Silicon Knights for imploding and RE6 for how it turned out when all the resources poured into it are considered.

The Rab Florence drama. Companies come and go. Bad games get made. This, however, was the one time that the games press should have looked at itself. Games journalists, who should be on our side, should have introspected on what it is they do and who are the audience they serve. And yet, for the most part, they closed ranks, pulled the rug out from under him and fought hard to maintain the status quo.

edit - if I could add another one, it would be the word 'entitlement'. Never seen it thrown around to describe gamers as much as it was this year.

38 studios for me.
ME3 ending second.

Being one of those who played the shit out of Reckoning, and followed the studio closely, it was pretty bad.

1. Doritosgate and whining of the game journalists about it
2. Mass Effect 3 ending
3. Star Wars TOR free to play model

Online services. Diablo 3 was broken and usable on launch, so was Black Ops II. Wii U has/had a bug that doesn't let it work with some routers without manual configuration, along with very slow downloads. PSN was down a lot this year. EA took a bunch of games offline. No transferring of Nintendo Network IDs. The list goes on and on and on.

Doritosgate, 38 Studios, THQ, War Z and Dyack..

This year has been quite the clusterfuck, and that's not accounting hyped games that turned out to be shit.

The fan reaction to Mass Effect 3's ending.

I thought it was absolutely awful storytelling and ruined what little was left of a good narrative in the series, but the overreaction was embarrassing.

Always on-line DRM
Mass Effect 3 original endings
38 studios

Which color of embarrassment was it? Red, blue or green?

Does it matter? no, because they are nearly the same fucking thing

My vote goes to WarZ - So very shady.

Runner ups are the ME3 debacle(the ending and partially Bioware's handling of it), 38 studios and the Doritosgate thing.

Doritosgate was a fiasco, for sure, but really all it did was expose a problem that most of us have been aware of for years now. It was basically a more public manifestation of the "gaming journalism lol" sentiment that is popular on sites like this one. It breaks my heart that gaming "journalism" is so fundamentally broken, but I don't think I can give Doritosgate the top spot for this year.

WarZ was an absolute clusterfuck, but at least Valve was quick in trying to clean up the mess.

So my personal selection for the Fail of the Year has to go to Silent Hill HD Collection. I get so worked up just thinking about this abortion of epic proportions. Silent Hill 1-3 represent the absolute pinnacle of survival horror for me, and the work that Team Silent did in their prime represents artistry in gaming on a level above nearly all of their peers. Everything about the collection (from the voice acting debacle to the newly introduced glitches, poor performance, and just general brokenness) was a slap in the face to not only the fans but also the original creators. I can only imagine what it must have felt like for former Team Silent members to see how their work was being presented to a new generation of gamers.

That collection had every right to be one of the best out there, given how well Silent Hill 2 and 3 have aged. What we got was undoubtedly the worst HD Collection ever. Fuck Konami. Fuck them right up the ass.

Halo 4

Microsoft and the new studio did a terrible job with the actual game and communicating with the community. Probably done with the franchise that was my videogame "home" for 10 years.

edit-
After some reading I still don't "get" Doritosgate, seems like a random overreaction to videogame media business as usual.

Mass Effect 3 ending by a landslide.
I loved the series, got every piece of DLC, comic, artbook, book, you name it.
Defended ME2 on this board time and time again.
So while playing ME3, every now and then, the disapointment about the ending would pop up, and i would think. It can't be that bad, they must be over-reacting, must be. The game is pretty good so far, it must be hyperbole.
I made my way to the ending in a 7 hour marathon sesseion, and words can't descibe the feeling of confusion and disapointment i felt when the credits role.

Same.

Doesn't seem like some big revelation to me unless there's something I'm missing.
