my personal favs.

I think "game of the generation" is more about the impact the games had, for some. SMG fits that bill better than SMG2 just by way of being the first.

I believe that Galaxy 2 will be more remembered and recommended that the first one. SMG was good, Galaxy 2 was amazing.

Personal:
1. Uncharted 2
2. Prince of Persia 08
3. Call of Duty 4
4. Red Dead Redemption
5. Resident Evil 5 Gold
6. Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker
7. Arkham Asylum
8. Assassin's Creed 2
9. Rainbow 6 Vegas
10. The Last of Us

RurouniZel

Asks questions so Ezalc doesn't have to
Xenoblade Chronicles
Valkyria Chronicles
Super Mario Galaxy 2
Atelier Totori
Wii Sports

Are my picks.

for me, its definitely Advance Wars Dual Strike, Pokemon HG/SS, Super Smash Bros Brawl, Demon's Souls, and Valkyria Chronicles.

some runners-up are TWEWY, 999, Xenoblade, Mass Effect 2, and Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow.

Both my PC and my PS3 died, so I missed quite a few games, especially taking into account games for platforms I didn’t own (like Wii)

- S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series
(didn’t see the rule - no PC-only games. :-/)
- Bioshock
- Valkyria Chronicles
- MGS 4
- Rock Band 2
- WipEout HD
- Recettear
(didn’t see the rule - no PC-only games. :-/)

I'm kinda hesitant to say Bayonetta because I only played the bad port.

Ninja Gaiden 2. The combat is so good, and it's a such a shame that the game was rushed.

Prince of Persia 2008. This game is an art masterpiece. I didn't mind collecting the orbs.

Mirror's Edge. The first game I played on my newly built PC. The style is just mesmerizing.

Team Fortress 2
Uncharted 2
Mass Effect (if only for the vision/universe)
Portal 2
Journey

Probably pretty similar to most lists. TF2 is #1 by about a light-year, though.

Portal and Portal 2
The Uncharted Trilogy
Burnout Paradise
Need for Speed: Hot Pursut
Need for Speed: Most Wanted
The Last of Us
Bioshock Infinite
Modern Warfare 1/2
Gears of War Trilogy
Dirt 2
Mirror's Edge
Trials Evolution
Pacman CE DX
Journey
Joe Danger 1/2
Rayman Origins

GTA5 might be added to this list soon.

In no particular order -

Skyrim (both with and without mods)

Halo 3

Dark Souls

Mass Effect 1

Fallout 3 (both with and without mods)

Fallout New Vegas (both with and without mods)

I know skyrim and the fallout games get a lot of hate on gaf. But for me the funnest thing to do in games, is exploring. And there are no other games out there that gives you an open world as big or detailed world as those games. And then just gives you complete freedom to just explore every single part of it. Being able to enter every building and cave and then more often than not find something interesting is just pure gaming joy for me.

Halo 3 probably, for me. A lot of contestants though. It's going to be difficult even making a top 10 at the end of this gen.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 - Pretty much 3D platforming perfection. I thought it was going to be one of those things that show how creatively bankrupt Nintendo is but they kicked my ass like I was the NY Giants

Crysis - Even though it was poorly optimized, it was still easily the best FPS this gen for me and it had some nice mods to boot.

Fallout: New Vegas - Great writing, liked the reputation system and I was able to spend a buttload time modding stuff.

For me....

Wii
Super Mario Galaxy
Xenoblade

Ps3
Valkyria Chronicles
Uncharted Series
The Last of Us
Flower
Journey

3DS even if this gen isn't over.
Fire Emblem

PC
Batman:AA
StarCraft 2
Xcom: enemy unknown

There are plenty of honorable mentions but these stand out to me.

These aren't what I would call the "best", but my favorites were:

Fallout 3
Demon's Souls & Dark Souls
Castle Crashers

Runners up:
Mark of the Ninja, Puzzle Quest, Little Big Planet 1 & 2 (years), Rocketbirds: Hardboiled Chicken, Pixel Junk Shooter 1 & 2, Tokyo Jungle, Metal Gear Solid 4, Mirror's Edge, Portal, Dragon's Crown (too soon to call it, but I want to)

-Company of Heroes

RTS of the last decade and showed that there was still room for innovation in the genre. SC2 didn't do anything new.

And why no pc-only games? I see people posting console-only games.

edit: here's a few more:

-Galactic Civilizations II
-Rome: Total War
-Civilization 4
-Torchlight II
-Amnesia: The Dark Descent
-Kerbal Space Program

I'm kind of bummed out by no PC-only games, but whatever.

Devil May Cry 4

The followup to my personal favorite game of all time. The combat system is cuhrazy, in a very, very good way. Lucifer is one of the best weapons in a video game ever. Nero's snatch and his rev mechanic are incredibly fun and never get old. To this day, people are still doing amazing things with the combat. It's an absolutely joy to play. The cutscenes are hilarious, with Uncle Dante having some of my favorite moments in any video game. Visually stunning, especially on PC, with an OST jammed full of sweet tunes. Devil May Cry 4 is not only my favorite game of the generation, but one of my favorite games of all time. It's fucking awesome.

Bayonetta

One of the best character actions game ever made. There's no doubt that it rivals Ninja Gaiden and Devil May Cry.

Donkey Kong Country Returns
Bayonetta
Xenoblade Chronicles
Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts (Don't judge. That game was awesome.)
Deus Ex: Human Revolution

were my personal favorites. I don't really think there were any definitive "Game of the Generation"s out there though.

In no particular order:

1. Metroid Prime 3: Corruption (Retro Studios)
2. Super Mario Galaxy (Nintendo EAD Tokyo)
3. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (Nintendo EAD Group 3)
4. Donkey Kong Country Returns (Retro Studios)
5. Dead Space (EA Redwood Shores)
6. No More Heroes (Grasshopper Manufacture)
7. Red Steel 2 (Ubisoft Paris)
8. Portal 2 (Valve Corporation)

Xenoblade Chronicles.

Best game I've played in years. One of my favorites of all time.

Few games were able to create an emotional connection between me and the characters, the story, the world...

I feel privileged to have played it. It's a game I will never forget.

The Last of Us
Uncharted 2
Xenoblade
Super Mario Galaxy 2
GTAV
Bioshock
Bioshock Infinite
come at me
Walking Dead
Portal 1 and 2

Those are mine just off the top of my head. Not in any order.

My favourite games of this generation are MGS4, Uncharted 2, Dead Space and MAG. I don't think I have ever had as much online fun as I did with MAG. Just an great experience. Shame the community died off after a while.

Still playing through Demon Soul's and that will definitely be up there once I have finished with it. Have not touched TLOU

Super Mario Galaxy
WipEout HD
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
Bioshock
Mass Effect series
The Last of Us
Tomb Raider (Uncharted 2, but better in every way)
Persona 4: Golden

That's my list of indispensable games that I'll still be playing years from now.
