Games right now that will be remembered as Classics!

Agree with the OP
Bloodborne

The Souls games and Undertale as well.

Games made by Hidetaka Miyazaki.

Singular vision. Stunning level design and rich mechanics. Deep lore. Games that actually respect the player.

The majority of todays games will be ignored once the eventual sequels come out. Nothing is really that classic anymore. Maybe Dark Souls because of what it spawned in Bloodbourne.

I would say The Witcher 3 but honestly I'm not so sure. Will it have the name weight that stuff like Skyrim has now? It definitely perfected things that others games haven't done, but I'm not sure.

Minecraft would be my pick though. That game is basically its own platform now.

Just a few off the top of my head: Shovel Knight, Darkest Dungeon, The Last of Us, Bloodborne, The Witcher 3, Divinity:OS, Pillars of Eternity, GTA V.

I think this is wrong.

Mass Effect 2 is a classic - Mass Effect 3 is not

Call of Duty Modern warfare is a classic - all the ones that came after this, nope.

Uncharted 2? Classic! - Uncharted 3, not so much.

GTA San Andreas! Classic! - GTA IV, Giant turd.

....

Minecraft. With over 70 Million sold copies and available on nearly every modern device, its nearly impossible for this game to be not remembered as classic. For kids it is in some way the new "mario" and adults are building computer devices out of redstone...

A very good point well made,

The Witness is going to go down as this generation's Myst. Absolutely amazing game.

I mean Destiny is awesome but nah. IMO a classic is something that you can go back to enjoy years later. Especially when they are invalidating old content.

It will spawn an entire generation of similar games and be considered a classic in the years to come I´m sure.

Minecraft, for sure.

From the last few years? Lots of stuff on the Wii U will either be remembered as a "classic" or as an "underappreciated gem", but that's typically how it goes on Nintendo systems.

For me, I think Xenoblade X stands out the most out of all the Wii U titles. It's the grandest love-letter to the PS2 era of JRPGs and people will remember it for a long time.

Taking 2013 as a cutoff point:

The Witness
Undertale
The Swapper
Antichamber
Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze

I already see The Witness as a timeless classic. Haven't been so obsessed with a game since Dark Souls.

Sunset Overdrive. We probably won't see a sequel so it won't get lost like other games do. It's also very original, but not popular enough that every game will copy it.

Dark Souls, yeah. I'd also (or rather) say Demon's, but not nearly as many have played that. BB, hmm... So great, but it's not quite the groundbreaking thing Souls was to many people, so I'm pretty sure the latter will have stronger "classic" status ten years from now.

Rocket League.

The Witness.

The Witcher 3, possibly.

I'm going to go in a different direction than most.

Companies want the future of gaming to be digital, online-only and service-based. They want to make a low risk, inexpensive game with in-app purchases to make the absolute most money possible. If this is where all the money is at, then all other business models will eventually go the way of the dinosaur.

The fact that these games are cheap and easy to make leads to market saturation. "Classic" games are difficult to be remembered because of the fragmentation of phones, and companies likely will prefer to make new content that port old content. The amount of "old content" gets substantially larger over time, so unless there is a desire to release ports, there will be a kind of digital extinction (piracy might help address some of this).

Really, I think the idea of revisiting games is going to be super niche in the future. There will be classics amongst the hardcore, but they will be forgotten by the public at large.

Bloodborne will probably be the Souls game people popularly remember and talk about.

Witcher 3 I think is too lore heavy without enough iconic moments to remain in memory.

Fallout 4 will be forgotten.

MGS5... I think will be remembered for sublime gameplay and not much else.

Undertale will probably be remembered and give rise to plenty of copycats.

Until Dawn will be the beginning of an evolution in the adventure genre.

Destiny I don't think will be remembered fondly. It won't inspire the warmth and nostalgia people have towards, for example, the first few years of WoW.

I'm hoping there is more to come from this gen because so far not a lot stands out as generation defining.

Best example I can think of. It's the one game that I can confidently say will never be forgotten. Things like Dark Souls and TLoU may be remembered within the gaming community, but everyone knows of Minecraft.

When I think classic, I am thinking of games that shaped other games for years to come. Like Doom and Quake did for the FPS genre, like Dark Souls did for the...well, pretty much every dark and foreboding RPG that has come after.

for me a classic, is a game that was amazing, and unforgettable experience.

last of us
halo 3
evil within
witcher 3
red dead redemption
batman arkham city

Undertale easily.

It deconstructs RPG mechanics in ways hardly done before. It takes a bullet dodging mechanic that, from any other developer may have ended up as a cheap gimmick, but is stretched far, far outside the box. I think this will also be influential in its Narrative design of how the battle UI is utilized.

Some good answers on this thread so far.

Bayonetta will be remembered. I don't think bayo 2 will be due to the small userbase of the WiiU

TLOU and Uncharted series.

Rocket League was mentioned. I think it's a great answer. Amazing, I only hope that when the ps5 comes around they let us upgrade rocket league

I think some of us are just highlighting great games. Clsssics are something different.

I'd say nothing has solidified itself as a classic besides Minecraft. And GTa5. Runners up include Rocket league, Splatoon, and BloodBorne, and TLOU. I think everything else will be forgotten with time sadly. These games pioneered enough to be the starting point of certain gaming styles and trends. I think a lot more high quality story telling will be done because of TLOU, Rocket league, Minecraft (already have proof on this) will be emulated, and BB or Souls Series have already demonstrated there influence on the industry.

Splatoon
Witcher 3
Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen
Bloodborne
Mario Kart 8
Xenoblade Chronicles x
Dying Light
Last of Us
Uncharted Series
Grand Theft Auto V
Dark Souls Series
Mass Effect Series

All of these I feel will be remembered as innovative and highly regarded classics for many years to come.

Minecraft, Splatoon, Undertale, Dark Souls, and Telltale's games all pushed the envelope towards something new. These will be the titles that the past generation will be known for.

Deadly Premonition
Nier
Red Dead Redemption
Undertale
the Zero Escape series
the Earth Defense Force series
the Mass Effect series, excluding the final five minutes of Mass Effect 3

Dark Souls series. I think DS1 will probably be the only one seen as a classic itself, but the whole series will be.
Uncharted series. 2 is classic on its own, but again the whole series will be.
Mass Effect series
Last of Us
GTA 5
Witcher 3
Minecraft
