Splinter Cell:Chaos Theory is the first thing I thought of when I read the thread title.

Others that came to mind:
Bioshock
Halo:CE
MGS
Super Metroid
Mass Effect
SotC & ICO

Devil May Cry
Halo (Best soundtrack of its generation by far.)
Mass Effect
Bioshock
Shadow of the Colossus (Atmospheric perfection.)

Super Mario Galaxy
Shadow of the Colossus
Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest
Metroid Prime
Super Metroid
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
Vagrant Story
Wind Waker had great atmospheric music for what it was trying to achieve!
Dragon Roost Island
Main Theme
I can almost feel the fresh air. :D :lol

Seeing all these answers here I realize that actually many games have great music. :lol

I especially agree with SotC (!), Beyond Good & Evil, Metroid Prime and Bioshock. Perfect Dark also had a great and fitting soundtrack, back then. The music on the alien planet was awesome.:O

Probably my favorite this gen... so far.
Mass Effect

and possibly a reach, I'm picking the most obvious scene here
Hitman: Blood Money

I really enjoyed the environments and naturally Jesper did a good job. I'm not going to say too much about it, but the ending :two thumbs up: I really enjoyed trying to become a part of the world to reach a Silent Assassin kill. The environment + music were large factors in that.

If Splinter Cell: Conviction and Hitman could have a child with pre-screening for their genetic deformities it'd easily be the best game this decade.

easily

I fear what basing the new game on the new movie will do :(

aww piss, there are many games to name, but I am a total douche for forgetting Homeworld. seriously

Peggle

Dead serious, I mean from when the main menu rolls up you get all happy. From the sounds the pegs make when you hit it to the background music not to mention the ode to joy when you win. Its a perfect example of how to use music to create a great atmosphere.

Currently playing inFamous and I was actually noticing how great the music went with the gameplay. You almost know that there's trouble right around the next street corner.

I didn't even notice the music in the open world. Was there any? It only played music in missions. Bah I can't remember.

FFVII is the only correct answer
I concur, except for the only part

I see the king of this combo has not been mentioned yet

I mean c'mon, FFVIII. Balamb, Fisherman, Dollet with each of his theme is unbeatable.

Almost forgot the mighty Timber there.

[x] All the above.

edit: wtf DMC? No nonononono.

Please enlighten me upon a game which pulled off a Gothic setting while immaculately incorporating modern stylish combat better than DMC? The soundtrack was impeccable as well.

e.g. Ultraviolet

Reccomend some games that have scenes with beautiful environments mixed with music that fits the mood so well it puts you in awe, where you just want to walk around slowly and let the game's world sink in. A game that comes off the top of my head is Final Fantasy X where there are many environments that combine well with the music and is so immersive. Psychonauts is also one where I could just walk and mess around and enjoy.

- Halo
- Shadow of the Colossus
- Okami
- MGS1
- Crackdown (you hear music while driving...amazing music)

Metal Gear Solid
Vagrant Story
Xenogears
Ico
Shadow of the Collosus
Beyond Good and Evil
Killer 7
Silent Hill 2
Metroid Prime
Super Mario World

Off the top of my head. There are probably tons more.

There are many that aren't immediately popping to my head at the moment but as for the ones that do:

Silent Hill 1+2
Parasite Eve
Chrono Cross
REmake
Resident Evil 2 and CV
Ico
Shadow of the Colossus
Ocarina of Time
Majora's Mask
Final Fantasy VI+ VII+VIII+Tactics
Super Mario World+64
Super Metroid
MGS1

The Wind Waker
Super Mario Galaxy

Mirror's Edge, although I wouldn't think it was good for just hanging around in the game world. Minimal, like its environment.

Gotta say that I think the Fatal Frame games have the perfect atmosphere and music combination, especially if you have surround sound.

Honestly surprised we haven't gotten a QFG series mention yet. Each game manages to capture the feel of its environment absolutely perfectly. Up there with the best moments of Metroid and Final Fantasy.

only two mentions of Bioshock on the first page?

wtf.

GTA: Vice City - it wouldn't have pulled off the 80s well without its amazing soundtrack.

Special mention to Oblivion. I found the vanilla music to be generic and lacking, but get some sounds mods and Michikawa's music and it's great.
