Games that have the perfect atmosphere+music.

For me the game with the best atmosphere and most fitting sound/music is Demon's Souls. By a long shot.
I love the games atmosphere and audio very much as well. :D I think it'll be one of my top games this gen when all is said and done. <3 it.

Reccomend some games that have scenes with beautiful environments mixed with music that fits the mood so well it puts you in awe, where you just want to walk around slowly and let the game's world sink in. A game that comes off the top of my head is Final Fantasy X where there are many environments that combine well with the music and is so immersive. Psychonauts is also one where I could just walk and mess around and enjoy.
I'm not a huge fan of the series, but I can tell you without a doubt that MGS4 has the best sound I've ever heard in a game. It's hard to say just how much this adds to the atmosphere, but it was immensely captivating for me. I'm not so much talking about the music in the game so much as ambient effects. I don't know if it's the pacing of the game or what, but I can confidently say this is the most immersive game I have ever played as far as atmosphere is concerned. I think the biggest contributor was the sound. If you were wanting to show off the graphics and capabilities of your HDTV, there are plenty of games I could recommend. However, if you were wanting to show off your surround sound, MGS4 is the one game that is leagues above the competition.

Phantom Dust I'd say. The hub world, the levels, and the soundtrack, all really friggin' awesome.
I own this game, never played it, and now that I dont have a 360 anymore probably wont play it anytime soon.lol

These are mine,
Super Mario Galaxy
Shadow of the Colossus
Dragon Quest VIII

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say SSX 3. Amazing feeling of being on an actual mountain, at least for me. Even the licensed music had good song choices, and Radio BIG (with weather updates, stories about different boarders) was icing on the cake.

The atmosphere argument for this is a little different than most of the games listed, but I think it works beautifully.

But what do I know... I have a love for this game. :D I think that's why I love it though: SSX 3 has engrossed me more than MOST other video games.

came to post this. audio really shines and creates incredible atmosphere without over-reliance on dramatic music. also the only game at the moment where i'll wander around a level for ages just admiring the view. some standout environments there.

This screenshot screams "Assassin's Creed on PSX" for a reason.

Awesome idea for a thread, bookmarked.

For me, Vagrant Story, Ikaruga, SotC + Ico, Rhythm Heaven, Wind Waker, and OTOGIIIII

Eventhough I'm gonna get the boot for this, gotta say Final Fantasy Chrystal Chronicals has one of the best and one the most unique atmosphere/music I have ever seen in a game.

Others are like the many people are already listing.

I'm just going to post some good old nerd rage here that nobody besides me has mentoined Otogi 1 or 2.

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUuuuuuu-

this revelation always dawns on me as you reach the modern ages, with the muted, minimalist staccato humming of...whatever that piece of music is....providing the perfect backdrop to the exhausted euphoria of the end game victory race.

DEUS EX?? Hello!

That you're the only other person in the thread to think this has lowered my already abysmal opinion of the general GAF population. God bless you sir.

Mass Effect, by extension, has that very synth-heavy, minimalist sound and almost feels like an aural continuation. Good stuff.

And of course Mirror's Edge has the best soundtrack released in years, and coupled with that visual style, is utterly unique in how it feels. The puzzle music in The Shard is haunting.

After having just completed it, I can definitely say that Mass Effect is a perfect example of this. Such an amazing soundtrack

All the other ones I thought of have been said, so I'll go with a weird choice in Forza 2. The music and presentation of the menus make it the best atmosphere I've experienced in a driving game.

There are too many to mention really. I'm surprised no one's mentioned Alice. Also Shadowman. And Timesplitters 2 didn't take itself too seriously, but that first level totally captured the feel of Goldeneye.

Though you can't really walk around, World of Goo comes to my mind.
This. The music fits so well with the different levels and really ties it all together in a nice package. I really have to replay WoG some day, love it.

Please give me World of Goo 2 :(, or at least some DLC

Silent Hill, 1-4
SotC
Dragon Quest VIII
Rogue Galaxy
Morrowind
Deus Ex
Vagrant Story
Skies of Arcadia
Way of the Samurai
Mega Man Legends 1 and 2
Metroid Prime
Eternal Darkness

...man, this list could go on forever :lol

EDIT: I'm just gonna let that list stand. I can't keep editing forever.

Oh man yeah. Some parts were positively creepy thanks to the music. Mass Effect is also a really good one.

Chrono Trigger immediately came to my mind.

There's really only a handful of titles, both new and old (some mentioned in this thread), that could hang with this bad boy. When it comes to atmosphere and music, it's a stunner.
