Games that no one asked for (good or bad)

Crazy Taxi 3?

Most people weren't to hot on on the second game (though I loved it). So how an XBOX-only third game got greenlit I dunno.

Metroid prime did come out of nowhere, people probably hated nintendo for it at the time of its reveal : best transition to 3d in gaming and one of the goat.

Kingdom hearts : One of the riskiest move ever done in gaming wich happens to be one of the most audacious, refreshing, well executed and unique game ever made. There's nothing like the first episode in the gaming world.

Flower : "A game about wind and flowers ? Get out." and yet the game is one of the rare console game that could appeal to anyone. Great game.

Easily Persona 4 Arena.

Thankfully it turned out to be one of the best fighting games ever.

And Tales From the Borderlands

Which turned out to be the best Telltale Game.

Good

Demon Souls
Back when this game was only released in Asia and Japan, where the world didn't know who or what From Software is, they released a game that does away with most of the pussified difficulties thar was plaguing modern games. I was lucky to experience the game in its original release form and was relieved that the future of action games will not be in vain.

Bad

Final Fantasy XIII-2 and Lightning Returns
Yeah like who the fuck asked for a sequel to the worst FF game of all time and one of the most brain dead boring JRPG of all time? Not one sequel, but TWO??? Ans hilariously, the sequels manage to be even worse than the original plot.

I was going to say actually MGS5. The story was completely complete after MGS4. Thats why there is nothing left for five.

It was complete after MGS3 to be honest. There was already more than enough reason and motivation there for BB to go bad. And everything after the events in MGS2 was supposed to be left unresolved, as it was more of a postmodern piece on video game storytelling than an actual story.

Portal. Who, in their right mind, ever said, "I want a first person puzzle game in the Half-Life Universe!" I mean, really, what does that sentence even mean?

Yet, we got it, and it was amazing. It was exactly what we needed, even if we never knew it.

I think 4 helped close the part of jack and rose that was left open from two. Also the end of tanker needed some explaining which it did.

Good: Phoenix Wright

first impression: A game where you play as a lawyer? rofl someone is running out of ideas
after playing: holy shit that was intense

Super Smash Bros.

I'm pretty sure way back then nobody asked for Mario and company in a fighting game.

Kingdom Hearts.

Disney characters in a JRPG? Yeah nobody asked for that one.

Jack and Rose were supposed to be left ambiguous, just like everything else. Players were supposed to wonder how much of what they played actually happened, and if it even mattered either way. Your experience was yours alone.

.... Then MGS4 came along and made everything literal and canon. Super Bunnyhop has a great MGS2 analysis video that's worth watching if you have the time: http://youtu.be/T-2YuPGYabw

Persona 4: Dancing All Night was certainly out of left field. Also, the recent Guitar Hero and Rock Band games were clear attempts to rekindle a fad that had passed long ago and should of been left alone.

This, really. That's the game i never knew i wanted.

Every triple A Ubisoft title for the past 10 years. Just stop guys, please. Go back to just making Rayman games for the sake of us all. Oh and more small stuff like Child of Light and Valiant Hearts.

Final Fantasy 13 side games.
Rainbow 6 Siege, AC Syndicate and The Division have all been absolutely solid releases. Uni is having a good 2015/16 .
Definitely agreed on final fantasy though lol

Star Wars: Force Unleashed II quickly comes to mind. With how the original ended, a sequel was a real head scratcher. Obviously a cash-in since the game was pretty crappy and still made you wonder why they made it even after you beat the game.

Sequels past a third generally

Generally most games that had closure?
This applies to a ridiculous amount of games.

Name one major series that sold poorly on its fourth entry.

I can easily name a bunch of series that had their absolute best sales on their fourth entries and beyond.

This isn't a "games I personally don't think should be made" thread, although a lot of people seem to think so.

Viewtiful Joe: Double Trouble is another one!

Me an everyone else wanted Viewtiful Joe 3. Instead we got this. I found it fun buuuut c'mon now. It just wasn't the same.

Pokemon + Nobunaga's Ambition, aka Pokemon Conquest. Seriously sounds like they took one of those video game idea generators and vowed to make the first thing that came up.

(Thankfully the actual game turned out well!)
I'm terrible at strategy games but ended up liking this one alot. Still confused as to why the heck we never got another one, 'specially since Conquest sold really well around the world.

Demon's Souls came out of nowhere, going from a floundering King's Field successor/Oblivion knockoff in development to an all-time classic thanks to Miyazaki taking the helm. It even had a really bad showing at TGS in September 2008 before it released, but From managed to pull everything together in time.

Seriously, at least for me, 1000000% Demon's Souls. I had NO knowledge of the game or of From Software, I've never been a big RPG fan, mainly play FPS games... and yet I absolutely LOVED Demon's Souls. The only reason I bought it was because a friend told me it looked good and I watched about 5 minutes of footage. After I killed Phalanx I immediately took my copy back to buy the Collector's Edition and boy am I glad I did as it's reasonably rare now, especially with the refurbished guide. Ended up completely it on half a dozen characters, reaching NG++++, just loved the combat and world. Definitely a game I didn't ask for and it's now in my top 3 games.
