Games that suck at pausing...

Yoshi's Island on the SNES freezes if you have it on pause over 5mins :lol :lol :lol
Atleast mine did :'(
Well that's most certainly your own fault for pausing the awesome of Yoshi's Island.

Comand and Conquer Generals.

If you are playing with your friends over Lan, once you start, no one can stop.
This, at the office, at lunch our, if the phone rings or someone is at the door we have to restart.

I loved the jingle that played on NES's Battletoads pause screen.

Toom-tss Toom-tss Toom-tss
Toom-tss Toom-tss Toom-tss
Toom-tss
Toom-tss tss tss tss
(repeat ad infinitum)

I seem to recall Ninja Gaiden having instances you couldn't pause during much like RE4, probably intentionally. For example, if you are getting your ass chomped by Paa Zuu you can't pause to use a health item until he spits you out and your ass hits the ground.
For grab attacks, you can go into the menu screen a soon as you're let go...being able to quaff a healing potion just before the moment of impact saved me more times than I'd like to admit. :/

Every fighting game.

Image you're doing a complex combo and your opponent happens to press the goddamn pause button ... :lol :lol

This was especially true during the 8-bit/16-bit era of slow motion being turbo pause. Street Fighter II had that pause sound with the guy grunting, and it turned into an atrocious cacophony.

And to the OP, are you talking about the original mario kart?
Yes, I was on about the SNES Mario Kart, but the issue remains in all of the sequels I believe. Anyway, your mentioning of Street Fighter reminded me that all Capcom 2D fighters suffer also have a similar issue, you can't pause during "Round 1, FIGHT", which is the only '100% safe' time to pause the game for a bathroom break.

Thank god for the Wii 'home' button, I didn't realize how useful it was until it was mentioned in this thread. Automatically amazing.

If I remember correctly, in the first Baten Kaitos it's pretty much impossible to pause during a battle so every time you enter one you simply HAVE to see it trough to the end or use the escape card. This was a bitch specially during boss fights which sometimes took up to 20 minutes of uninterrupted playtime.

Kinda minor, but in Guitar Hero, if you pause during a held down note, you automatically miss the rest of that hold. Even if never let go of the button, if you hit pause and unpause the note messes up.

Yes. :(

Even with the Master System adaptor for Mega Drive, you couldn't pause with the MD's start button. Had to reach over and hit the tiny little pause button on the adaptor. IT'S A GAME IN ITSELF.

That's funny, I had forgotten that Master System adapter had a pause button on it as well.

To clarify for the young ones in the thread, the Sega Master System was designed with only two buttons on it's controller. No start or select button. As such, the "PAUSE" button was placed directly on the console.

Can you imagine having to get up to your console to pause a game? And people are shocked Sega went out of the console business, it was always only a matter of time :lol

No. 5 Biohazard 4

Biohazard 4 isn't too bad at pausing, but it has some strange idiosyncrasies. You can't pause the game during the following situations...
-firing a gun
-kicking
-180º turn
-lying on the floor after being knocked down
-being hit by an arrow or Melee weapon
-jumping over a gap
None of which are a too much of a problem game play wise, which is why I've put it at no.5.

Sounds like a game design choice. You can't really mess with your suitcase or read a map while firing a gun.
