Games where rolling is faster than running...

Besides Sonic of course!!

This seems to be quite common...and for what I reason? I don't know.

I recently encountered it in Earth Defense Force 2017 (you are not a gamer if you do not buy this game).

It's something I used to do quite a bit in Zelda: OOT
.

IIRC, The Getaway featured this as well.

I know that there are many other games out there with the same "feature"...I just can't recall them at the moment.

There are also games where you could exploit the controls to go a bit faster. Wall Strafing in the original Half Life, for example. I think you could go a bit faster in Goldeneye by walking forward and strafing at the same time...

Any more to add to the list?

Bunnyhop/strafe jumping in all/most HL mods and obviously HL itself. Same for all games based on Q1. Then you have Q2, Q3 etc.

So damn true! That's how I get to other parts of the map. You would just see me going sideways.... rolling...

It's kinda hard to roll fast in EDF because of the camera (I hated the focus at the sky cam...made me die more than once because action is still going on). The only sure way to do it is with the d-pad by pushing diagonal + roll button repeatedly.

Adding to the list: Any Quake engine based game lets you bunny hop like a mofo.

[edit] beaten while typing. :(

Strafe jumping made Action Quake 2 awesome.

Having to roll in EDF 2017 is painfully slow, I really miss the jetpack girl from EDF2. :(

Are you talking about when the camera focus on a spaceship? You can turn that off you know :P.

God of war but only if the camera was aligned so the roll was sending you on the right angle.

I can't remember if the player in Turrican moved faster in buzzsaw/roll mode or not.
Any game where you can get into a wheeled vehicle would qualify, right?

Well, I was thinking of more of a perhaps unintended exploit.

I mean, sure, you can go faster when in a ball in Metroid, but that's the same with Sonic, it was intended to be that way.

Whereas the back dashing in Castlevania: SOTN was probably not intended to replace running.

Things like strafe jumping as well. It wasn't intended to be the primary method of going from point A to B, but most people when in a hurry would do that rather than run. And it adds a layer of complexity and skill to the game so the devs wouldn't remove this originally unintended feature.

Rolling was slower in OoT because there was a delay when you finished your roll. But in TP it was much faster than walking.

Actually it was faster although it didn't seem like it. When you race the grave digger dude you can beat the living shit out of him by rolling.

Haha, backdashing in SotN. I forgot about that. I used to do that a lot too even though it looked pretty retarded. (walk into a room, promptly face the other way, and start hammering the triangle button)

Syphon Filter - I used to roll around because it was faster and so I didn't have to constantly look at Logan's funky running animation.

Somewhat related, but I actually think locking the camera and walking backwards is faster in OoT than even rolling, assuming your destination is a straight shot.

Also, while it isn't technically rolling, Mega Man's slide has always been faster than his running speed :P

Whoa there, let's back up a little. Backwalking, aka Holding down the Z button (L for you GCN n00bs) and pressing and holding DOWN on the analog stick is the fastest method of natural movement other than riding Epona, and then there is the range of "slides" you can do to push Link over a great distance at high speeds with the Hover Boots (but those are only temporary). I will concede rolloing is faster than running, but let's make sure we know it isn't the fastest means of travel, even on foot.

Yeah, running backwards makes you MOVE. I used to side jump across hyrule field until I discovered that you could pretty much sprint backwards.

There are also a few FPSs where running diagonally makes you run much faster.
