Well presumably a developer might employ DOF as a way to tell the player what they should be looking at, i.e. what's important.

The game shouldn't be constantly telling the player what to do a where to look, they should be allowed to figure that out on their own.

Thinking about it more, DOF actually does work in games with lock on, since the player is telling the game what they are focusing on.

Pikmin 3 looks like it uses it to great effect. It's not just background elements, but some foreground elements (foliage, Pikmin) that exhibit the effect.

Visually, it communicates the fact well that you're peering into the undergrowth into a tiny, hidden world.

DOF is almost never implemented particularly well. I pretty much always turn it off in PC games, there's little need to throw a bunch of blur on things to simulate something my eyes are doing already.

Your eyes really don't do it that well on a 2d plane though (aka comp monitor). In games with stereo 3d though, it is mostly unnecessary.

I almost always turn off DOF because it's usually done at half or quarter res and screws with the image quality. Though I do like the bokeh in Crysis 2 and Witcher 2 in cutscenes, but not the general background haze.

Depth of field is great for cutscenes but keep it away from gameplay please. I don't want a programmer telling me that I shouldn't be looking into the distance or foreground or whatever.

yep. I assume it's more of a cover up feature to hide the lack of distance detail. It's so severe in some games that they couldn't be using it for (misguided) artistic reasons

Killzone 2 is a great example - love how the weapon is slightly blurred

The Witcher 2 blew me away because this is what I imagine next-gen DoF will look like. I also liked the DoF in Twilight Princess.

Given that I don't have much experience with high end PC stuff - I will nominate my two favourite console games that stood out to me for Depth of Field quality.

Witcher 2 on the 360 was outstanding.

And Dark Souls. It's not always perfect, but god damn some areas and draw distance look absolutely stunning with the DoF used in that game. Anor Londo springs to mind.

I actually quite liked the depth of field in Dragon Age. Not best, but worthy of a mention because it complemented the game very nicely.

Besides that, The Witcher 2 has the best DoF I've seen, technically...but unfortunately it's way overused most of the time.

I actually was amazed at the depth of field I got when playing Ocarina of Time on my 3DS with the 3D effect on.

When aiming the slingshot, I actually could feel my focal distance in my eye adjusting as I looked from Link to his target. It was pretty neat.

Killzone 2 definitely had a strong dof effect too. Maybe Metal Gear 4, too?

Killzone 2 and 3 stack up among this generations top PC games IMO.

It would be interesting to compare amount of polys on screen.

The Witcher and Crysis edge out Killzone on textures and resolution (less so in KZ3).

Effects and poly count must be close. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me to find out KZ2 and 3 push more polys on screen.

DoF effects are certainly comparable to PCs best.

Huh, Crysis 2 DX11 blows KZ 2 & 3 out of the water IMO. It looks very good for a console game but in my view it's absolutely not on par with Crysis or Metro 2033 maxed out.

Crysis 2 DX 9 even blows KZ 2&3 out of the water. KZ 3 doesnt even have per pixel motion blur like KZ 2, because budget on SPU was tighter.
KZ 3 is amazing looking game though, just not even close to C2, Metro or BF 3.

Does any console game released thus far actually feature full blown Bokeh (aka the only worthwhile DOF)?
Only Crysis 2 and maybe LBP 2, but dont really remember if its bokeh or not.

That said, Killzone 2 & 3 both look stellar. Superb lighting and effects but having played all of those game to death, I can't say in all honesty that it looks nowhere near as good as top PC games like Metro 2033 or Crysis/Crysis 2 DX11.

IIRC Killzone 3 does not support SSAO or HDR, is that true ?

Crysis 2 4 lyf

Yes, its true. KZ 3 has SSAO only in pre-rendered cutscenes and it uses LDR.
Oh well it looks good enough already. Can't wait to see what they will pull out of the PS4.

By the way someone shoud make a thread "games with the best motion blur" if this has not been done already. My vote goes to Crysis 2 DX11.

Somehow missed that quote, what makes you think so ? It's not unthinkable to me but I still doubt this is the case.

Having just finished Assassin's Creed Brotherhood recently, I hadn't noticed the subtle DOF effect that happens when you target someone until the other day. This really work well within the context of the game, since you're targeting someone with the intent of either chasing them down, or assassinating them in a busy crowd of NPCs. Will see about getting a screen of it later when I get home.

The effect is very nice in Blue Dragon but it really doesn't bother you guys that the game doesn't allow you to see clearly into the distance? Look at that dungeon(?) shot! That gauge isn't even 10 feet away from your character and it's already out of focus!

This. Blue Dragon went way overboard...stuff that should have been in focus wasn't. I constantly wished for an option to stop down the virtual "lens" and increase DoF.

People complaining about it during gameplay, makes me SMH. Our actual eyes have a pretty large aperture but the closer something is to the face the smaller the DOF is going to be. Unless you are staring way into the distance (ala infinite focus) DOF should and will show up if they are striving for immersion and accuracy.

Most of the shots in this thread though have something that looks like aperture under 3 which are eyes do not have and should not be used in scenes where you are "seeing" the world around you and it is not just being displayed like a camera.
