Games you were looking forward to which vanished into the ether

Early in the wiis life span there was a bizarre concept video for a fitness game that i cant remember much about other than it had some generic name like Wii Fitness that makes it impossible to find now.

always wondered what the hell it was but nothing else came out of it

edit- it was a third party game and the trailer involved a bunch of surreal imagery of wireframe people doing exercises but thats all i remember

I remembered another one. There was a game called Pirate Battle for GBA that looked pretty cool. I think it was an Orbital game. As I recall, it got canned but was mostly done? Maybe there's an incomplete build out there.

MGS5. I liked MGSV though.

Also MGS Rising when KojiPro were going to make it and it was going to be on the MGS4 engine and the story was going to be set between 2 and 4.

motherfucking Agent. i feel like Sony and Rockstar have totally fooled us with that one.

why are people mentioning Silent Hills though? it's not that long since it was announced. let them work at it, they'll show more when they're ready. it's going to be AMAZING. kind of my dream game to be honest..

About that rock you're living under..

With the amount of resources/info available on the internet nowadays there are hardly any cancelled games that vanished without trace.

These is a list of games I was really looking forward to:
Earthbound 64
Fallout 3/Van Buren
Post apocalyptic CRPG by Troika
Torn (Black Isle CRPG)
Ultima Online 2/ Ultima Worlds Online: Origin
Duke Nukem 4 (E3 2001 edition, still the most fun looking version)
Warcraft Adventures: Lord of the Clans

My lust for it only grows stronger with each passing day.
5+yrs and counting

Lost Ark Online (hopefully next month at G-Star that it will show up).

Mega Man Universe. Played it at TGS back in 2010 and really enjoyed it then they cancelled it. :/

The Phantom Dust reboot. Granted, I don't mind Microsoft putting it on hold to find another developer because that prototype footage looked sub-par even for a work in progress.

I really wish we could have gotten WWF Backlash on N64. Eventually AKI made Def Jam: Fight for New York as their swan song before they became SynSophia and dropped off the face of the earth, and that sort of makes up for it, but I would love to have another AKI N64 wrestling game on my shelf. Considering how much each game improved from them on that console, we were looking at maybe the greatest pro wrestling sim of all time.

Vaporware thread? Guess I'll go with star craft ghost and killing day
Man....like 9+ years ago, I did a market research study, and Killing Day was the game. This was well before PS3 & XB360 had been showcased.

My feeble mind couldn't comprehend what I was seeing at the time. The destructible environments. The graphics. The particles. My mind was freaking blown. Was described at the time as "A game where shooting is the main focus - most of the movement is handled for you, and you take care of the fun shooting and explosions." Despite not liking the idea too much, I didn't care. I had never seen anything like it. And I wouldn't see it again until many E3s later, where a short trailer was shown, and then...poof....

I did a study on Assassins Creed 1 about a year later, was equally as blown away...but...we all know what happened to that series.

Is it safe to assume Owlboy wont ever take flight, because I'm thinking that.

(Also sorta vanishing act even if the game released elsewhere, the 360 version of Ori and the Blind Forest, my laptop just doesn't have the chops!)

I really wish we could have gotten WWF Backlash on N64.
I forgot this was even a thing, why did you have to remind me?!

FFVersus 13 was literally my most anticipated game ever, strictly because of the Kingdom Hearts combat....and...well....FFXV is not FFVersus 13

I feel your pain man.

On topic, Eight Days, Agent, The Getaway and a couple other "PS3 exclusives" that never came to be. Ni-Oh for example ended up showing itself last month for the PS4, so I wonder how many of the others may still be being worked on.

I am sure that is cancelled. Put on hold is just PR speak.

My pick would be Final Fantasy Versus XIII

Aside from obvious ones mentioned, I was excited for Codemasters' Dragon Empires MMO before it was cancelled.

I remember reading this article about Earthbound 64 in the horrible German video game magazine "Total!". I know the game did not exactly vanish, but turn into a japanese exclusive GBA game, but man, I was really looking forward to this. :/

Not exactly the first title you think of when it comes to cancelled Mega Man games, but I'd say the cancellation of MMU was a far more painful loss than MML3 because it was basically Super Mario Maker but 5 years earlier (and with Mega Man!). Not only that, but you could play as other Capcom characters as well as customize your own robot masters, the whole works.

With the runaway success SMM has been having, Capcom would have to be fools to not at least consider reviving this game from the depths of cancelled game hell.

"Hey lets get all the fans involved with making the game! They can help us with designs and stuff! It'll be a great way of engaging with the community!"

"Eh, game's canned. Guess more of the fans should've helped us make the game. Totally your fault guys."

Fuck off Capcom.

That PSP 3D remake of Landstalker.

Virtual Fighter 3 on Saturn.

Would Shenmue on the Saturn also count?

Another vote for Whore of the Orient. The guys behind L.A. Noire making a game set in 30's Shanghai was like a dream project for me, but god knows what's happened to it. I suspect it was cancelled a while back.

An mmo called W.I.S.H. Pretty much Morrowind as an mmo. Shame they actually killed the game during beta. Weirdest thing I've ever witnessed and still believe someone bought them out because the gameplay was solid.

Don't tell him. He doesn't know. It'd be like shooting a happy puppy.

I never understood how Namco was going to make Street Fighter work well with Tekken's mechanics. I don't believe it can be done well, so I'm not surprised it never came to fruition.

Harada has said that the game is well into development, but they're simply "waiting for the right time to reveal it"--most likely because it's going to be on current-gen consoles now and they want to avoid the taint of SFxT.

EDIT: He talked about the game's current state a few months back.

Definitely Theseis:

E3 2005 Trailer
E3 2006 Gameplay Compilation
Ruined House Teaser
Mansion Teaser

This was an action-adventure game that was in development between 2004 and 2009 by a Greek development studio. Everything they showed of it looked really interesting to me (although the animations in that one gameplay video do look pretty bad). I was really bummed when it got cancelled. One of the guys who worked on it created a blog chronicling the game's development (and everything that eventually went wrong with it). It's definitely worth a read: Theseis Development Blog

Don't ask my WHY I was looking forward to it, but I was for some reason:

As a kid, I was looking forward to Secret of Mana 2, when it was revealed in some game mags, but of course, it never came out to the US, and it wasn't until the internet that I learned it was finished just never released.

And basically anything announced for the 64 DD that never came out in the US.

Sure, they didn't vanish into the ether, but they might as well have to my childhood self.
