gamescom closes for the day: too many visitors

By being open to the public, isn't it considered "bigger" anyway?
Not really. It's like saying the biggest orange is an apple.

In case of what matters, we should compare the publishers and vendors that are showing off things at the event. Gamescon could still win there though now that I think about it, considering how many new reveals it got this year.

It already was the years before on the weekend. They will probably have to change things for next year.
they wont. all they want is more and more visitors (which was the main reason for cologne) each year. they will only change things if someone gets hurt (i really hope this doesnt happen).

Eep so full. I am heading there tomorrow, hope it's a bit less busy. O.O" I was at TGS last year and even that wasn't as full. (Apart from the place where they sold food)

Absolutely understandable that they wanted more people, btu they can't continue like this if the result is actual this risky for people. It really is just a disaster waiting to happen.

It's won't

I was there on Wednesday, Thursday.
Wednesday was okay but even though it was a Press / Business only day on the show floor the queue lines were already crazy long for some games. (Diablo3, Skyrim, BF3, COD:MW3, SWTOR)

Thursday was even crazier. All the halls were packed with people.
I went down two times to the show floor but there was no air and about 40 C in every hall.

Germany has a long history of crushing/crowd incidents at events they dont seem to be able to organise anything safely
Not sure about long history, but Love Parade 2010 was definitely an event to remember.

So yeah basically the only way to enjoy gamescom is to get Press access and run around the show floor during the press day to make pictures of the booths / boothbabes etc.
(Already a bad idea to get into the queue lines)

And the next day to have appointments with the publishers in the business area for actually trying some of their games / or checking some of their presentations.

Video game conferences must be hell on earth.

E3 was really nice when it was in Atlanta. It was ungodly hot outside, but inside the convention hall there was room to walk around, and the volume was kept at a decent level so you could talk to people on the show floor.

So this is now way bigger than E3 right?

What Europe Empire need to make the publishers and console makers make their main press conference of the year in Gamescom (since it's the biggest show) instead of the E3 now.

Why would you want this? Clearly this convention was better than E3, but why would you want them to push the conferences into August? E3 in May was the best. Big news in an otherwise dead period.

not really. e3 matters, gc doesnt.

E3 was dreadful this year. There was hardly anything interesting or exciting. Gamescom came out of nowhere this year and exceeded expectations. That's all I mean.

One mistake could result in hundreds of deaths with so many people put together.

The organisers of the event should be arrested, immediately. Just shows they've learned fuck all from the love parade disaster last year.

All this Europe vs US, E3 vs GC thing is just stupid.

I live in Europe, but I think E3 is still better than GC, same level as TGS.
I mean, at E3 you always wait for something big to be revealed, new consoles, new games etc.

Maybe Europe deserves more attention, but if GC is the best we can do... This really lacks organization. I hope next time they'll make it bigger and with more booths, I would've gone crazy being in that crowd.

Woah, see all those people trying to get in Nintendo? Boy, if only you brought the Wii U along!
It really is amazing how Gamescom has become bigger than E3 and TGS in a span of a few years. At least Sony, EA, and MS have woken up to that.

it hasn't really; e3 is not open to public.

holy shit?
I was at gamescom for the first 2 days and this is what happens on the third day?
Damn I guess I picked the right days. There weren't even a quarter of this amount of people.

Who are you refering to, with regards to comparing gaming conventions in this thread? Aren't you just spreading awareness to what you, think is a problem?

gc should get much more attention from the publishers. i remember when ms announced the price and release date for the 360, that was pretty big. i think they should move gc to september/october.

Was there thursday and it also was very very crowded. Asked my mate: "how much more people are they gonna let in? "

Just plain stupid: they could have seen this coming...They should just let in people who sold their ticket online. Another thing that doesn't work with such crowds is the system where you have to scan your ticket and than get in. Takes too much time.

I hope people don't get killed today :/ Haven't they learned from the Love Parade?

What is the point of even going?

An hour after opening the queues for the AAA games are already big enough to cover the rest of the day.

When I was at Gamescom last year the event was highly organized and very fun. We purposefully avoided the Saturday crush after experiencing it in Leipzig prior.

As far as E3 vs. GC. I actually like GC more. I've been to 4 E3s and 2 GCs and the active gaming public excitement lends more atmosphere than a bunch of suits walking around calculating how many units of a product they want to buy. Also, I'd rather be in Cologne than Los Angeles.

I've been there twice and i've never seen that place so full. Granted that in both cases it wasnt about games, but still.

Cologne is a beautifull city btw.

Seeing that picture I just imagine that the nerdiest and most epic recreation of the ending of Crocodile Dundee could be done with that crowd

Wow at that video though, so incredibly dangerous

We were taken by surprise thursday. We were last last year and the year before, but it was never as crowded. 2 Years ago we were in at 10.00 , waited about half an our to play at the Sony stand ( I remember we played Heavy Rain, Uncharted 2 and GoW3 ) and waited for about 1,5 hour for Mass Effect 2.

But last thursday the lines for Vita and Skyrim were 4 hours long at about 14.00.
It's just crazy that they let more and more people in.

What do you think will get stronger word of mouth, a game played behind closed doors at E3 or game demoed in front of a 100,000 people at Gamescom?

Publishers are better off spending their money on a GI cover than on a E3 billboard.

PAX East did more for Red Dead Redemption than E3 ever did.

I'd rather have gamescom disappear and have more local events with presentations for the public by developers like with Duke Nukem Forever last year (and many more actually).
