Gamespot GOTY 2005 is...

first

Not unexpected. If you look at it from a US release date(Wow, MGS3 released here in europe feb/march) it's a well earned award. I may reaply it again now. Haven't really played it since jan/feb.

One would have to have a nice amount of bias to not admit that RE4, atmosphere and gamelay wise, blew everything else away with extreme prejudice.

On topic, I would like to say that while I consider RE4 to be the game of the generation, I want to give Shadow and the Colossus a nod as well. Such a terrific game.

I certainly respect and understand the love for the game, and from a concensus standpoint, nothing else is close, but it's not my top game fo the year, although I did think it was truly great. Shadow of the Collossus and GTA: LCS were higher for me. I just felt the controls and the structure of the game (see shiny object, pick it up, use it to solve ridiculously simple puzzle) could use a bit of a kick in the pants.

People called it a reinvention of the RE series, but I really felt is was the absolute refinement of what came before. The camera finally fit the control scheme.
 
Have to agree. Easily the best title I've played this year. GTA:LCS was a close second for me, mainly due to the technical achievement.
 
i have been playing, the first video game i have actually touched this year...and i do like this nice change of pace into an action game. graphically it doesnt impress me as much though, honestly. what were ppl talking about???

How far have you gotten? GC or PS2 version?
 
Maybe Gamespot considered the fact BF2 is the least new-user friendly game out there? Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, rescue me with a ranking system that isn't fucking sadistic!

Overpraised and overrated imho, im not trolling its still an awesome and one of the best games of 2005.

But, Battlefield 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3(that released here in march) wins this, with Re 4 being on 3rd.

BF2 is more fun and better. But awards tend to go to single player games in general. No biggie. BF won multiplayer game of the year. :D

RE4 does have a special place for me and was my undisputed GTY before Bf2 came along. I think alot of companies should look at what capcom did to go from zero to hero with RE4.

PS2 version doesn't look that bad but it doesn't look as clean as the cube one
 
I couldn't agree more and I'm not surprised. I am glad that one of the few companies that decided to make a leap and a jump with a game this generation is honored in the way it should be. Way to go Capcom.

(BTW, I never played most of the other games up for the award, so I guess I'm not the best source).

And the beginning is the least impressive when it comes to what visual delights the game has in store.

So you've been there from the start.

I never did play the original Battlefield, so I am a complete noob to the franchise. I got my copy late October. The game just isn't fun for newcomers. The chain of command system rewards dedicated players (and by dedicated, I mean people who have the time to devote 8 hours a fucking day to this shit) and gives them an unfair weapon advantage even on top of their refined skills. Spawn, die. Spawn, die. Spawn, die. Spawn, die. "Get off the server, noob!" some gleeful 12 year old with a thousand hours under his belt screams in my ear.

It doesn't help that servers can't be optimized to exclude certain ranks for a true Newbie gathering(at least, not that I've seen). Servers titled "Noob Only" are just bait to veterans who want to rack up 100 kills for a screenshot to show off on their clan's forum.

It would have helped, in a tutorial sense, if single player(with borked AI) wasn't so pointless.

Don't get me wrong. I welcome a steep challenge, and respect reward systems. But for me, BF2 just didn't find the right balance. Not even close. I thought for the longest time I just wasn't finding the right server.

But when a developer, like Splash Damage, points out all these flaws, and they are so enlightened as to suggest remedies that both regulars and newcomers can agree on, it gives my opinion weight.

Anyone want to buy my copy of BF2 for $10?
 
I'm in and out so I can't fully address your points at the moment. I will say that for the most part, ranks are fairly useless and harmless and the weapon unlocks provide a minor improvement, if any at all. I still find myself using the standard Medic gun when I play USA instead of the unlock. Sorry I can't go in-depth right now, though I'm sure deg, etc. will pick up for me.

first off, the unlocks aren't even better then the standard weapons.

second off, you just suck.
