It's a made up problem. I've never been talked into buying something I didn't want to because an employee of the store tried to upsell it to me. If you do then you've got problems. If you're influenced by salesmen when you've already decided what you want, that's a you problem. There's nothing ruthless about this, though. Companies pay to have their products front and center in retail all the time. Grocery stores get kickbacks for those soft drink and potato chip displays at the front of the store. This is like that.

The difference is that the stores aren't exclusively selling Microsoft stuff and licensed accessories, they're simply promoting Xbox consoles for a cut Of the action. It's not even close to the same thing.
Did they officially shut them ALL down? (Genuinely asking). I used to stop in the one in Mall of America all the time to say hi to a friend who works there. Then covid shut everything down. I've only been back to MoA a few times since it reopened; and, while all the stuff is still in the Microsoft store, i haven't seen it open yet. I was beginning to wonder if it was reopening at all.
