Gamestop: Forced bundles are "Convenient" for Consumers

From hearing how "their employees want to work on Thanksgiving Day/Black Friday" to the "bundles are convenient" disillusions coming from corporate, I am so glad I stopped shopping there years back.

The only convenient thing is your bullshit for you Gamestop.

People loved to vote EA the worst company but Gamestop deserves it so much more for a long time.

Well you know the same day I wanted a SNES Classic I just so happened to really be in the mood to buy a $150 mega man helmet

Wait, what are these forced bundles? Are they new? Are they doing them in Canada too?

Edit: read the article... is this... is this legal??

That would be like pulling up to a gas station, and being told I can't buy gas unless I buy a bag of chips and a pop... no?

It's called tying

In America, it's a gray area, but I've heard in the past that Europe is far more consumer friendly.

Only convenient for me because it helps me figure out which store I want to buy from. Gamestop conveniences me because I get to cross it off the list.

Ok sure... but it's the shittiest practice I've ever heard of... these bundles seem to be needless accessories and crap that most people would never even touch too.

It feels like such an unethical practice, I would have thought there was actually law against other lines of business doing similar things...

You would think Nintendo themselves would be completely AGAINST this too... but I guess they don't care once it is in the retailers hands... and something like the SNES Classic is guaranteed to sell every copy they get their hands on. That is likely why they are doing it...

Holy shit this pisses me off just thinking about it!

It's definitely slimey. No doubt about that.

Here are some examples of the "convenient" bundles offered by Gamestop's subsidiary physical nerd junk website Think Geek

Are you feeling the convenience yet, GAF?

"Convenient" would've been throwing in accessories that I might've bought in the future, like a case or an extra screen protector. How is a Switch and physical Monopoly board going to work together?

Around the holidays the bundles are legitimately good for moms/dads/grandparents buying gifts for the kids.

This is not the case in the middle of July when the Switch is out of stock everywhere but ThinkGeek.

that stuff is at least preventing scalpers from buying
they can't sell all of that for a profit

of course its legal. While shitty, I would not agree with some government entity telling a company how to sell stuff like this. If GS wants to lose peoples business over only selling crappy bundles, then that's their choice and right. Ill just take my business to a different store.

No it's not. Scalpers bought those bundles out KNOWING they can make their money back and then some. Especially off of the cheapest bundle. Those ThinkGeek orders lasted 20 mins at most.

No buddy they are convenient for you to get rid of your stuff nobody wants to buy.

On forced Switch/SNES Classic Edition bundles

"We really try to do a great job of paring up items with things customers like to buy. In the case of the Switch, we know the customer is going to want a way to charge the Joycon (controllers), so we often throw in a charging device. We know the Switch has limited memory and customers like to download games, so we'll add a memory stick. And then you need a game itself, because what good is a piece of hardware without a game to play with it? We make it more convenient. We put some items in the bundle from ThinkGeek.Com, retro items that would appeal to those buyers."

I have a charging device it's called the fucking Switch.

ha right. While I haven't had mine very long, I have had multiple long docked Zelda sessions and haven't even come close to running out of juice on the joycons. I haven't even looked at how long they stay charged for cause I doubt I will ever be using them long enough for them to need a charge during a single sitting. This isn't the wii U where the thing would go dead after 3ish hrs

Think of it this way.. "If we didn't bundle the things you wanted with shit you didn't, we might have sold out of it a long time ago!"

lol

When Gamestop is dead, nothing of value will be lost.

IÂ’ll go a step further: with GameStop gone the industry will be healthier than ever. Just imagine if all their used game profits, plus a goodly chunk of the expense of leasing the chain of retail outlets, and the salaries of hordes of people whose role in life is beg you to buy and sell used games instead went to game developers and publishers?

We could be on the cusp of a new renaissance in gaming.

Naiveté: the post. Brick and mortar retail for games and its influence on the industry as a whole won't just end because one long-ailing specialized retailer drops out.

Because Gamestop is the only brick and mortar store that allows trade-in's and sells used games...

Forced bundles. In 2017. Holy shit.

Why does anyone still shop there?

I take advantage of trades at times when I'm weary of craiglist. Not too bad. They gave me like 30 for an old worn down PS4 controller. I don't pay more than 35-40 for those to begin with.

Similar but a bit different situation here. There are companies that will not service your oil burner unless you buy oil from them. So merging crap together is not new.

Not going to defend these guys but all they are doing is seeing what the scalpers are doing and grabbing the money instead of them. Capitalism at its best.

I wasnÂ’t referring to the retail establishment, which will find itself slowly losing influence with the rise of digital sales in any case, but to the pervasive culture of used game sales through GameStop that act as a leech on the industry.

You know that Best Buy also sells used games, right? And would likely stand to gain the most from Gamestop's demise in the brick and mortar arena?

I still remember when Electronics Boutique pulled this shit when the PS2 came out.
Lucky for me the game I was forced to buy was Tekken Tag Tournament.

Still, fuck this stupid practice.
