GameTrailers' Kingdom Hearts Timeline Video

Will do guys, thanks. A Kingdom Hearts backlog catch-up is likely to be the last "new" stuff I play on the PS3, so that will be cool too I suppose.

Yeah I did, but I'd gladly put money that the majority of people who have played KH2 did in fact play it first, on normal. If you think otherwise, please enlighten me, because you know that i'm right.

That's true I don't like it, but I stated why I don't like it. The gameplay is nothing special, and like I said, from the fanbase - it's pretty much true, I'd like to see the age census of all the people who posted in this thread, and I'd guarantee we'd see a trend that the fans played KH when they were around 10-14 years old.

You can't deny that the story of KH is so cheesy, and teen-angsty, hell, a lot of the fans in this thread seem to have a love-hate relationship with it, to the point where they think "it's a joke". That Timeline video was evidence enough -

Kingdom Hearts plot is even worse than MGS plot ( due note I'm a big MGS fan but I can acknowledge that the plot is just straight-up Kojima nanomachine retarded at times).

Having someone narrate the complete nonsense of that KH timeline just shows how convoluted and stupid it can sound.

Tell me why you like the KH series - I'm actually curious as in to why, because i feel like it usually is a nostalgia thing.

Play KH2 on Proud. Or alternatively wait till 2.5 Remix comes out then you can play it on Critical Mode, and even at lvl 1 if you wish. You're not going to just use triangle.

I like the series because I find the gameplay to be really fun (especially on higher difficulties), and I like the music, the worlds/Disney aspect, and the characters. The characters are some of the most memorable in gaming. I still like the plot too even if things have gotten crazy, and it still makes sense to me.

But im going to guess you played KH back when you were younger, so nostalgia has a lot to do with why you still like it. Would Disney characters and the teen-angst filled trio still sway you over, if you were introduced to KH now in 2013?

Also, "fun" is not very descriptive in an objective standpoint, why is it fun? What do you like about the gameplay? Hacking and slashing?

If you know me you know I'm not one to defend KH's plot, but DDD actually doesn't actually have much angst at all. Sora is dumb and cheerful and Riku has gotten over his 'issues' and it mostly stoic.

EDIT: DDD has plenty of other problems though.

I agree with Soriku, mostly.

I didn't care for KH2, even on Proud because it's so darn easy, but I hear Final Mix is a much better experience.

Who cares if the fan base is nostalgic? Doesn't make the games bad. Also the gameplay is fun for those people who like action rpgs. Sure the games are easier on normal mode, but that is normal. Has been since 2. And you go play BBS and tell me the last fight with Terra is easy even on normal. KH 2 was the easiest game in the series imo. I admit I played the games when I was young and still love them to this day, but that doesnt mean the games today are bad. You dont like them, so move on.

I played KH1 when I was younger, yes. But I'm still a big JRPG fan and I like Disney, so it'd be pretty hard for me not to like it no matter when I was first introduced to it. The FF characters brought me in as well. But I don't play the games for nostalgic reasons. I play for the reasons I mentioned.

What makes the gameplay fun? It's fast paced, Sora has some really cool moves, bosses also have badass moves and I like to face them. The triangle thing in KH2 is a serious overreaction by the people who mention it too. Also, in DDD they introduced Flowmotion which is ridiculous in a good way. Kick jumping off walls and being able to go far distances using it is so awesome, and I can't wait to see it used in KH3 too, and hopefully other KH games as well. It's much more fun than running around, or gliding. Some people argue it breaks some balance and makes you get chests easier, etc. but level design isn't something that draws me in to KH and I didn't mind getting chests using it.

So happy my good friends and the staff over at KHInsider make up about half the consultants on this project. :) Shame GT is too lame to link to the fan site directly but I'm so proud of those guys.

This was actually necessary to make, the series is so complicated.

Wait a sec, nobody asked me to link to KHInsider. I asked how everyone wanted to be credited in the video, name, alias, whatever. I wasn't asked to include links. Only the staff of Twilight Symphony and ZREO asked for such a thing out of everyone credited over the two episodes so far. We linked to both of those sites...

If the KHI staff would like their site linked to, that is no problem and never would have been a problem. I just was never asked to do that. Please don't jump to conclusions and assume it was for any other reason. You've got it all wrong.

to answer you in order.

This thread does not represent the entire fanbase of kindom hearts, you may wish to poll other places as well to get more accurate numbers.

what I think of the plot is what I think of the plot, I do not have to acknowledge anything.

You do not like both of those plot lines, that is fine, I know people who would dissagree with you. Its ok if you do not like it though. Just dont go around claiming it as fact or something " you have to admit"

I actually for the most part( apperently xenhort is a bloody doctor) have an issue with the things that happened in the story.

And to answer your last bit

Ahem.
The art
The characters and words all look great. They are designed pretty darn well. Some far far better than others, riku isn't beating sora in any fashion shows. But I have yet to see a kingdom hearts design that I detest.

The gameplay
Its good, its fun.

Kinda short but, yeah.. them games good meng.

The music.
You said yourself.

I guess those things could be summed up as atmosphere.

Another thing I like are character themes. Too many times in the entertainment i indulge in that comes from japan. The MC is magically good at everything. Sora is not good at everything, Riku is a testament to that, they brought home the point that Keyblade are Riku's damn thing. The amazing stuff riku has done. Sora is kind of an underdog. I like that, sora is good at what he is good at existential heart friendship babble. Riku can be the guy that hits things hard. And Kiri is the princess of heart, sora does not have to do all three jobs. And also a super sayain, and also a shigigami and also a hallow.

This isnt to say I do not have issues with the series. I have quite a few, if you want me to list those I can go ahead and go into that as well.

I just watched this. I thought it was great. Would be awesome to see GT take the place of G4's old Icons show.

Was the thing at the very end a teaser for the next timeline or do they always close out that way?

I've only played the first three and I had no issues. It's pretty great. I feel ready for KH3. I might watch this again prior to it's release.

Yeah I figured what the hell, and watched it anyway. I was a little afraid to be spoiled, but then I realized that I'm probably never gonna play all those other side games anyway.

Can someone explain who takes of the three babbies in Destiny Island? They just live alone?

Destiny Island is a small island off the coast of the mainland which is presumably just a larger island.

They all have parents, except Kairi who lives with god knows who.

Just got through the whole thing. Made me want to watch those Final Fantasy retrospectives again. Kind of sad that I'm probably going to graduate from college before seeing KH3.

Riku was supposed to have a dad and Sora has his mom (?) calling him down for dinner in KH1. Riku in KH1 also said they had to leave their parents to go to other worlds. Kairi has her grandma?

The series hasn't really concerned itself with parents/guardians. Also, Tidus, Wakka, and Selphie live on DI as well.

Okay, less weird than I remembered, but still pretty weird. Nomura really didn't concern himself with making a world that made any sort of sense.

smh, gametrailers.

came here to link this.

KH is a joke at this point, can't stop the hype - we need to see how it ends.

Yeah, because it is going to end!

So the next GT Timeline is Metal Gear Soild.
What is it with Japanese writers and complex plots? Granted, Zelda wasn't meant to be a massive story cause Shiggy hates stories, but what's up with KH and MGS? Part of me wonders how much is lost in translation and cultural differences.

Bad writing + franchise that spans through the years + "complex" plots= Recipe for a disaster. It doesn't help that many games are just created to exploit a series popularity without any real plan behind it. (in short, they need to create a plot from zero and fit into the story. How many times can they do it without fucking up?) It's not just Japanese writers though, think of the ME series and its fucked up continuity.

Though with Zelda is mostly an attempt to fit something that wasn't meant together in the first place.

These kind of plots rarely work for videogames, the only decent example i can think of is the Ys series because 1) the plots are fairly simple 2) Falcom already had the plot for the whole series written.

Maybe he wanted to compare it to Twilight!

Chain of Memories, BBS, and DDD are integral for the story. Recoded and 328/2 Days are easily skippable. I am still salty that they never released BBS on the PSN store so I can play it on my vita, I don't have a PSP anymore cuz the one I had broke.

God this was a great watch. I've only played KH2, but this has really gotten me pumped for KHIII. Off to preorder KH1.5.

DDD has a lot of problems story wise but I enjoyed the plot way more than 2 or 365/2 by the same reasons.

They seemed more grounded in their sillines than the attempts of Interdimensional Drama. Fuck, I thought that the plot twist of
the council of Xehanorts
was inherently poking fun of EVERYONE IS SORA/ANSEM.

Also: Tron Legacy

Just finished watching this video, and I loved watching it. It brought back so many fond memories that I have to buy KH 1.5/2.5 (please have DDD in this latter!). GameTrailers has really stepped up their game over the last year.

I really want Gametrailers to do a timeline video on both Xenosaga (I know this one will never happen, but a man can dream) or .Hack. But, I am excited to see their video on the MGS saga.

The video gives a great summary on the entire series in my opinion.

Lol at Coded having the least mention though.

Xenogears + xenosaga timeline would be amazing

One its nothing wrong with the former.

two what DDD did you play?

Xenosaga...shieeeet. I'd love that. Haven't played Xenogears yet...

Do all the side games have the same basic gameplay as the main games? Wasn't one of the some kind of card battle game or something?

They're all just a tad different. Chain of Memories, both the GBA version and PS2 remake use the card battling system. Birth By Sleep is more similar to KH1 and KH2 using command styles and command melding. re:Coded is a bit similar to that. Days has skills tied to a panel system which allows customization of abilities Dream Drop Distance has skills learned and acquired by training Dream Eater companions.

But with the exception of the Chain of Memories GBA, they are all 3rd person action RPGs.

No matter how insane the stories get, I still love these games like crazy. Simple and Clean orchestrated started and I almost got teary eyed.

Sora, Riku and Kairi are some of my favourite characters from a Square game in a long time. They're just so precious.

I resent Versus 13 so much for holding up KH3. Square, just finish stupid FFV13 so you can get to KH3, please. :(

.Hack would be amazing, there you can't blink or else you are so freaking lost haha.

Amazing video, KH soundtrack always bring tears to my eyes, as chesy as it is, it's my favourite franchise, I hope they don't make more side games though.

This was like a better put together and slower paced version of that Jacks Kingdom Hearts explained simply video on youtube.

One day we will get KH3, one day.....

The one thing this video was really missing was a segment explaining all of the loose ends that we still have as of the ends of BBS and DDD.

Stuff like who the 7 keyblade wielders of light will likely be, where Terra, Aqua, and Ventus are, which other folks are likely to be brought back, et cetera. Also, all the stuff about Isa/Saix and Braig/Xigbar.

Aside from missing info about specific topics, I did want some feedback about the structure. I've had some people say we need an introduction to the video at the start explaining the "format" and what the series is about. Also, got some people who said the first part about the release order should be even more condensed. Musing about possible changes for future installments.

I quite like the structure of the timeline videos. For the Kingdom Hearts video (I still need to see the Zelda one), I completely understood the format after I watched it. During my viewing of it, I never felt lost or confused.

Watching now. This is a good summation.

This story is dumb as fuck. I can't help but have a soft spot for the series, but yeah.
