I think you need to reread that thread because I see that most people like the story.

Do you have a problem when they don't? I like the cliches and standard trappings of JRPGs. That's not to say a lot of the innovations aren't nice, but if a game gets knocked for being traditional there's a pretty good chance I'll enjoy it more than the reviewer did.avatar299 said:do you have a problem when an rpg pushes the genre.
It was the Shigematsu Dream of a Thousand years that gets the praise. The Story itself was said to be so-so.clashfan said:I think you need to reread that thread because I see that most people like the story.
Yes. I don't mind a game not being AAA every time at bat, but at least try to do something unique. This whole "Everyone loves tradition. Who cares about new ideas" shit that has been spreading since Blue dragon is frightening.zurra said:Do you have a problem when they don't? I like the cliches and standard trappings of JRPGs. Different genres. Different standards. It's kinda hard to innovate a game of football in 9 months.mjc said:I find the argument of the gameplay being "nothing new and more of the same" a bit off. If they were to apply the same standards to most sports and FPS games, their scores would be collectively lower than usual.
Selectively pick? I've only seen one review. Is this the best one it's got?harSon said:We know, you've said it a couple times. You seem to selectively pick the few mediocre reviews out of the several good ones :lol And goodluck beating Lost Odyssey within a rental time frame.
I can see Lost Odyssey is going to have polarizing reviews like Blue Dragon.

New to GAF? We always have a few trolls who emerge in "big game" threads and work overtime to kill the hype. They continually harp on the worst review they can find and tout it as the most accurate, while completely dismissing high scores as lulz moneyhats/fanboys.harSon said:We know, you've said it a couple times. Yeah, I definitely understand that. WRPGs and JRPGS are so radically different in almost every respect that it's nearly impossible to put them in the same genre.Hellraizer said:However, Mass Effect is an "real" RPG in my opinion but one hard to compare with something like Lost Odyssey.

NONE of them ripped-off from FF as much as I have seen on this video, none of them.

Mass Effect had several. Ratchet & Clank was overrun by them. Eventually, you learn to pick out kooks like sakuragi and tjhooker and sacrifice them to the gods of ignore.

ZealousD said:Yeah! How dare they!
Hey, you know what else is a huge fucking ripoff? Rock Band! They totally ripped off Guitar Hero!
I like being a higher level GT user. Giving those stupid trolls a -11 thumb rating is sooo satisfying.

Oh well who cares I suppose.
Also for the all the ffxii praise I'm not seeing it. I thought the battle system was not only boring, but very badly balanced. I wont get started on the story.
nelsonroyale said:lets not bring ffxii into the discussion...others feel diametrically opposite to yourself, but this thread will turn into fire
CowboyAstronaut said:I'm just pointing it out since people always feel the need to bring up the disgrace in the series that is ff12 in every single thread relating to Lost Odyssey even when everyone already knows the type of game Lost Odyssey is.
Nobody needs to continue hearing people praise Final Fantasy 12 as if it was the second coming of jrpgs or if it is somehow better than Final Fantasy games of the past or an example of what all jrpgs should strive to be.
I only mention ff12 because people always bring it up as a means to poke fun at how "archaic" or "behind the times" this or that jrpg is. Well people often times fail to realize that new doesn't always mean better and nowhere is that more evident than in the mess that was Final Fantasy XII

Anyway, these Lost Odyssey reviews make it sound like a rent. Although, reports of awful loading times are starting to sway me away.

Also Gamespy gave it a 5/10 :lol
C'mon really? From that video review alone I can see it is better than 5/10, wtf.
As a note, the "average" game could very well be "good". They're not mutually exclusive.indi said:Technically, 5/10 would be average, 6/10 would be above average and anything above would be between "good" and "excellent."
There is no way in hell that you have an Xbox 360.Snah said:GameTrailers also gave Assasin's Creed a 9.1.
I don't know, the contradictions present in the reviews for this title really make me uneasy about picking it up. I lost faith in MistWalker after Blue Dragon, but was still holding on to a bit of hope that they'd get it right with LO.
But outside of one review, all of the comments regarding the story and score (the most important aspects for my personal enjoyment of an RPG) have so far been overwhelmingly negative.
Is the system dead or did the game just freeze? If the game simply crashed, it's nothing to worry about and likely caused by the software.Durante said:Well, I just started playing the game a little while ago. I enjoyed myself in fact, really liked the dream segments. Played for some 4 hours. Why am I not still playing you ask? Well, it's a fun little story: MY 5 WEEK OLD FALCON 360 JUST CRASHED WHILE I WAS PLAYING. MS WTF IS THIS SHIT?
Yeah it's basically the same scoreZefah said:To be fair, it was 2.5 / 5.0
5 / 10, or 50 / 100 both look a lot worse than 2.5 / 5.0
Most places who rate things on a scale out of 5 actually consider 2.5 and 3.0 products to be fairly good.
No the system isn't dead, it just crashed. But still, I lost around 35 minutes or so. I can't remember any JRPG ever crashing on me, and I played quite a few in my time. Shit sucks.dark10x said:Is the system dead or did the game just freeze? If the game simply crashed, it's nothing to worry about and likely caused by the software.
Easy, put the action-game in between the RPGs.Relix said:So, this or DMC4? I still need Mass Effect and Assassin's Creed. But this month its either DMC4 or LO. Then in March, obviously Brawl and maybe DMC or Mass Effect.
So, help... DMC4 or LO?

My hardware being fine is nice and all, but a console JRPG simply crashing is quite a new experience for me so excuse my outburst. I'm back to playing now.McDragon said:btw Durante, your 360 is fine, i recall some members here experienced weird bugs and crashing.

CowboyAstronaut said:You mean so many things right about it. I know the words "Final Fantasy" instantly earns a game a free pass to a lot of people, but I'm not one of them.
There are many things wrong with FF12, but people choose to ignore it because of the name. It doesn't matter how good or bad FF13 ends up being because reviewers will call it the single greatest thing ever no matter what.
I'm not saying FF13 wont be an amazing game because I'm looking forward to the game just as much if not more than almost anybody here, but I'm not going to sit here and act like Final Fantasy 12 was anywhere near as good as I hoped it would be and I know very well that if FFXIII doesn't end up quite as good as it's expected to be very few people will admit that due to 2 words "Final" and "Fantasy".

No country for old men doesn't have 100% on rottentomatoes and it's still a masterpiece worthy of a 100% score.
Learn to accept that people have different opinions, don't fear that by doing that you are accepting that those reviews become important to you.
