Gaming Bolt: Why Starfield Will MAKE OR BREAK Xbox

Imho it's barely possible that MS breaks, with all the acquisitions they have done. Although after the short Psychonauts, FS and Halo period we again got not the promised stream of games. They have good RPG studios, they have a bunch of shooter expertise, they have some nichier title producers, they have a good race sim. They basically only lack in narrative heavy games but apear to have a broader variety than their competitor right now. Even without AB MS should do fine unless they somehow manage to turn Bethesda in a Rare situation. Starfield is just one, but maybe relatively important, but still just one of many games that will have to be good to attract players.

Wait this isn't on PS5? But I thought Phil wanted to unite gamers and bring games everywhere! How could Phil tell us of these wonders about keeping COD on all platforms when he mercilessly removed all of Bethesda from one of their biggest revenue sources?

Just imagine Bethesda wasn't there...bought 2 years ago and already carrying Xbox on their shoulders. We definitely should call the showcases "Bethesda & Xbox Game Studios showcase", not the other way around.

Hyperbole from a gaming bolt youtube video?

Oh No Wow GIF by The Great British Bake Off

Talk about click-bait! Starfield is the next main Bethesda title, so it is going to be very good, judging by the quality of its predecessors. Will it move the needle for Xbox? I seriously doubt it. Will it improve GP numbers, at least around its launch period? Sounds logical to me! Will it have the reach of established, popular properties? It remains to be seen...

I was thinking that Starfield might be the next Mass Effect...guess I'm wrong on that one

Yep. Extreme over-exaggeration and hyperbole. Typical YouTube video approach to get people to click.

It's a very important game for them, obviously, but it ends there.

There is no way this will be below 80 or Zelda tier. It will be a good mid 80 game and that's all it needs to be. I bet i'm gonna spend 100+ hours with Starfield.

I've yet to see any gameplay that is suggesting this. I hope to be wrong because it looks decent.

Xbox is doing ok even without releasing a single AAA.So, They will be ok regardless.Game pass is maker or breaker for Xbox.

While i dont think its make or break. I do feel that if this game doesnt move the needle for ms to gain some marketshare nothing will except for a colossal sized screw up from sony.

People judge things harshly that they have paid for when they do not meet expectations compared to those where the "investment" level is low or free. In the case of Game Pass, the investment level is low due to access to "numbers" of games for a monthly fee, with Starfield being one of them. Given my history with Bethesda-made games, Starfield will likely be my first, but from what I have heard others say, people have an idea of what to expect, so unless people's expectations are sky high, the game can only surprise people in a novel way. If it doesn't meet expectations, I am not expecting people to judge it too harshly.

This is the same line of thinking that calls the Switch doomed for not having a new hardware revision for like 5 years running.

There's truth to it sure.

I think Starfield is more important for Todd Howard's legacy though. Fallout 4 and 76 were both stinkers. His last critical hit was Skyrim. He needs to show he can still deliver the goods.

Their problem isn't one big game...it's having a consistent flow of great titles, which they have struggled with for a long time.

I'm excited for Starfield and hope it's great, but it alone won't change anything.

I doubt it could break Xbox but many people who love Xbox (myself included) are getting tired of waiting for those killer system seller type of games

Microsoft needs to have a standout year in terms of game releases and announcements. All planned games must meet or exceed expectations in terms of quality. The company should also provide gameplay demonstrations for previously announced titles and make exciting new AAA announcements.

Doing so will help Xbox to remain somewhat competitive against PS5. If Microsoft fails to meet these expectations, Xbox sales could potentially decline, which would be a significant setback for the company.

no it wont. even if its terrible, phil spencer will come out and say how exclusives are bad for gaming industry and go buy gamepass.
people were hyped for a 5 hour rhythm game, im pretty sure they wont be picky about whatever bethesda puts in front of them. they even defend fallout 76 now.

Well if Starfield turns out to be a massive failure (which I don't think it will be, regardless), then the perception of Xbox Studios as generally being a failure at managing game devs will grow substantially.

Microsoft has been the formal owner of Bethesda Game Studios for 2 years now, so they certainly have had time to influence the game's development. At the very least they took out one of the platforms on which the game was being developed for.

It seems every day another thing will be the end of Xbox. I know how the true end of Xbox comes about. Eventually after years of predicting a Gamepass price increase, it eventually happens and a certain group of people will simultaneously cream their pants so hard the earth will be destroyed in the shockwave, destroying Xbox.

88 (87 on PS4) for Fallout 4 on Metacritic is not a critical hit?

It's insane how people attempt to rewrite Bethesda history following the change of ownership.

Pretty muted for a big Bethesda RPG. The game was a disappointment for many reasons and this is something Todd Howard admitted to on several occasions. They're making changes in Starfield based on the criticisms they received for Fallout 4. Now we just have to see if they can deliver.

I'm sure there are major Fallout, Elder Scrolls announcements, waiting in the wings if this game tanks. Those announcements being scheduled on how Starfield does, lousy (announce very quickly) a success, wait for at least the following holiday to at least bring those titles to light. The audience will be placated either way.

The article is hyperbole. The commenter saying it's negative Xbox news was accurate.
The article is staging "Starfield" to be the game that will make or break Xbox. You can question the statement for what it is....it's going to the extreme to position the game higher in the list of upcoming Xbox exclusives. It is not necessarily "negative" or as the commenter put it "shitting on Xbox." It is definitely a clickbait article to drive clicks.

Todd Howard doesn't miss. Fallout 4 was a step back but from everything said so far it seems they aren't going for the streamlined approach like Skyrim and FO4 and instead is taking more notes from Oblivion, which is great.

Everyone knows starfield is gonna have bugs. This is not a question. When people bring up they're "concerned" it will be buggy I can't help but wonder why

It will be buggy sure, a game like this can't launch perfectly, but it will certainly not be the usual catastrophic launch associated with Bethesda under Microsoft's watch. I'm sure Bethesda has been sent back to the drawing board a few times to clean things up. If Microsoft wasn't involved Bethesda would have had this out the door a while ago in their usual state, I'm sure.

Here's hoping that's the case. A Todd game with actual RPG mechanics would be the tits.

But at the same time...

Game pass is not half of Xbox. Not even close. You can't just pull a couple of "great games" out of nowhere to compensate.

Starfield is by far Xbox's most important game in decades. Having this game fail will damage the brand substantially.
Even if they can't all of a sudden pull a couple of great games they can at least pull a couple of okay games and pay some Japanese studios to announce a port of some games to xbox.

They've had so many fails in the past decade from crackdown3, to scalebound, halo infinite, and barely any first party games lately to the point that everyone was fearing that xbox would go third party at the end of last gen but gamepass saved it. It has continued to save xbox all of this gen as well. Starfield is just one game. Yes, it failing can hurt the brand but the brand is already damaged so one more dent won't really change much.

Yeah that and people asking them to use a new game engine are the worst talking points when it comes to BGS RPGs. I also hate that these games have become console war fodder.

Maybe, either way it's what you sign up for with their games, FO4 was probably the least buggy game they've released and people seem to view that as their first real misstep. Just seems we're over sensitive to this type of shit at this point - I don't mind if there are bugs as long as it's a good game

The worst that can happen is that it will suck at launch and a year, several content patches and complete edition relaunch later it will be a solid game. Mods will pick up the slack on PC till then. By that time the TES hype machine will start hitting its stride and gaming bolt will write an article on how TES could potentially break MS.

Make hopefully.

There's a healthy amount of hype behind it, and both the PC and Xbox haven't had a major new IP release since Elden Ring.

When did Todd say Fallout 4 was a disappointment? I cannot believe the shit people make up those days. And 88 is « muted », lmao you guys.

There was one Q&A session where as far as I remember he recognized two flaws: the dialogue system (fixed in the expansions for the most part) and the lack of pacifist option.
