The pics of custom PC rigs in this thread show why I will always be a Mac user;

The always evolving minimalist nature of my life is slowly pushing me towards an iMac. I think those are really nice looking and take up very little space.

As for me, that's a tough question, because I think most video game hardware has been ugly. For some reason, though, as a kid, I just loved this:

NECTurboGrafxCD.png

YES. :lol I actually won that system when my family was stationed on Ramstein AFB. They were having a contest to see who would have the highest score in that Rambo-like shooter (Bloody Wolf?) and I won by a disgusting margin. I won the TG-16, CD and Ys Book I-II. So awesome. I love the system to this day.

Neo Geo, PSP, Super Famicom, and my plasma TV are all so hot. :D

Wanted to make a 64DD/Broken Heart topic the other day and found this hot little pic on Flickr.

Why did you have to break your promise to me Nintendo? Whyyy?? ='(

I wonder f Nintendo gives the Atom some consideration for their next console. A dual core atom only uses like 5w of power yet it'd be a very significant CPU upgrade over their curent solution.
5W is fucking huge for portable hardware. Just so you know, the iPhone's CPU has a TDP of 185mW (0.185W): it's an ARM1176JZ "Speed Opt" rated for 0.45mW/MHz, clocked at 412MHz. Even on the iPod Touch 2nd gen (where it's clocked at 533MHz) it has a TDP of 0.240W

And just in case you were talking about "console" hardware, the Atom is x86, x86 sucks balls and I'm pretty sure N will try very hard not to break Wii BC.

Try running a full Windows desktop on one of those though. :lol

Performance is hardly in the same league at all, there's an order of magnitude difference. The single core Atom's TDP is only 3w fwiw.

x86 sucks balls, eh? Well all the fastest processors available are built on x86, and the PowerPC architecture hasn't produced anything of note for a long time. Nintendo wouldn't be able to get the same performance per watt if they went with IBM again.

Yeah I'm sure Nintendo is worried about being able to do that.

No shit? And an i7 has even more punch! In other breaking news, water is wet and fire is hot. Stay tuned for more insight from brain_stew.

On the most efficient versions clocked at 800MHz, it's actually 0.6W. As long as you conveniently forget to factor in the required chipset (an ARM is an SoC), and even the most efficient x86 chipsets have a TDP of 2.5W. Not so impressive, all of a sudden.

Yes.

Not so sure about that one, more performance != more PPW. It's irrelevant anyway, Nintendo most definitely will not be going for an Atom for the "DS Next", and they have no reason to switch to x86 for the "Wii next".

One day you'll be mine. Yes... one day...

This is the most beautiful for me...had one back in the day and it was the fucking videogame version of the F-14 Tomcat. Second place goes to the GB Micro (still Nintendo's best designed system)

Well they sure as hell need to increase the power of the machine somewhat, if their new CPU isn't capable of running a full Windows desktop then, it really will be a dire upgrade.

The Atom is pretty much best in field when it comes to performance per watt, it really is an incredible bit of hardware. I just can't see IBM matching that without the stacks of resources that Intel have.

I don't think the development of the Cell processor is at all relevant to any CPU that would be suitable for the next Wii, and plus that took a significant input of resources from both Sony and Toshiba to come to fruition.

I doubt that the next Wii will use a Atom processor either, but it does fit well with their vision of hardware. The fact that Intel's focus will be on getting Larrabee into consoles will probably mean that they're not that interested in any such venture anyway, Nintendo's penny pinching proabably doesn't fit with an Intel contract either.

So am I the only one who still thinks that the PS3 hardware design is hideous? PSthree can't come soon enough.

On the other hand...

The only way I'd improve that would be to give is a slot-loading drive.

Also seconded on the GB Micro, N64, Dreamcast, and PSP (2000 is my favourite).

Last time I checked, Broadway wasn't exactly hitting the limits of the PPC arch, and as for the DS... they have room to grow in ARM.

It's also a power whore as far as embedded/mobile stuff is concerned, especially when you remember that you have to add the chipset's power consumption to the equation.

Erm... so? You were still talking out of your ass.

And as far as Atom being awesome, sure it is -- as awesome as an x86 CPU can be anyway -- but at the end of the day if you have hard power consumption requirements no matter how power efficient the Atom is it's irrelevant if its power consumption exceeds your limits.

This one blows my mind. Especially considering the adapter is inside of it. Lack of slot-load kills it as a vertical system but, then, if it had one I doubt it be that thin.

The PS3 looks great in pictures.. but it's too goddamn big in real life.
The 360 looks pretty good in RL, if a bit cheapy... but the power adapter kills it.

Logitech should build a PC case and sell a logitech rebranded monitor.

I've already got their expensive ass keyboard (the dinovo edge), mouse (MX revo), speaker pod and speakers... hell, even the freaking headset that was posted that was hated on I bought. For $50 back in the day. (and it broke goddammit).

I've even got their freaking Playstation Eye cam sitting on the desk acting as a microphone.

And their harmony remote!

Goddamn, I'm such a whore for logitech.

But I must say, they provide an excellent aesthetic alternative to the Apple's minimalism style.

yea, it really is great.

that aside, i think psp is the dopest hardware since dreamcast. and iphone being the best, most recent one.

all the ps3 love is funny to me. that system is not elegant or breathtaking whatsoever. it's big, heavy and uninspired. once they slim it down i think it will be much better looking. but then again, we're back to approximating the look of the ps2 at that point, albeit rounder...silly design, the ps3...not an "evolution" so much as laziness.

I would throw down an easy $600 for a yellow PS3.

Not saying I would buy many games for it, but it's so damn hot.

All the colors I posted you can get...for a price.

Am I seriously the only one that likes the original full-size PS2? I always loved the monolithic look of it when stood vertically - it looks sleek and imposing, yet it's not overbearingly large like the PS3 is.

And some of the special colors available (Ceramic/Pearl White, Sakura Pink, and Aqua Blue especially) are gorgeous. In fact, if they didn't have the stock-colored buttons and port areas, they'd be perfect.

Unfortunately there aren't many good images of it that I can find, but here's the Pink and Blue versions:

And a very shoddy image of the White:

At first I didn't understand all this love for the vertical PS3...

Then I remembered:

it does look nice....but do people really have it standing in their homes? I know everyone I know (including myself) that has one does not
I would buy one of those today if it were to be released. It looks so good...

High-end x86 sucks balls for embedded and the Atom sucks balls for everything. I'm typing this on an Atom 330 (dual-core 1.6GHz) machine, and it's the shittiest processor Intel ever made. I have a P3-600 here that outperforms it in everything
single-threaded
. Per core it's most definitely in the same ballpark as the 724MHz G4ish thing in the Wii, but "a very significant upgrade"? Nah, never.

I had that card (paired with a Soundblaster 16). Which is why when anyone says midi music sounds like shit, I cringe. Which that little card, midi music on the pc sounded like cd quality music.

I didn't post a picture of the giant LED fan on top but it puts on an amazing light show that totally encourages people to lean into it. That combined with the fact that all my friends are drunks means that its lifespan is likely to be very, very short.
