GBMicro launch in japan = successful

Reports from Japan say Game Boy Micro is off to a solid sales start on its first day on sale.

A spokesperson for 'Best Buy' style retailer Yamada Denki said, "The orders have been going well. The Famicon color version is really popular."

Hirokazu Hamamura, president of magazine Famitsu added, "Despite the Micro's functions being the same as the existing models, it is popular. Consumers lately have tended to buy particular hardware because it is stylish or fashionable."

One retailer said he's sold 70% of his stock, but that sales had not matched Game Boy Advance's launch.

Micro went on sale in Japan today, a week before its U.S. launch. The company's target is to sell 4 million units within six months.

Well, I think it is natural to have assumed that it wouldnt have sold as much as GBA and SP did on their launches. It really doesnt offer anything new.

That being said, it is amazing how well it has sold so far, considering the above.

This turnout is likely what nintendo expected.

gameboy.ign.com said that reported sales weren't as high as the SP's when it came out.

But if you take 70% of 250,000 (the reported shipping number), you get a number higher than SP's.

Hm...

Nintendo could stick anthrax in a box labeled "The most infectious game boy incarnation yet!" and people would still camp out in front of stores to get it

I think Super Mario Advance 4 launched with it as well.

I like this device but the fact that the screen is smaller and text can get smashed together is why I'll be avoiding this.

FFTA launched with the Gameboy Player, not SP.

I think WarioWare came out the same time as SP.

No, other way around - FFTA (and Metroid Fusion) with GBASP, Made in Wario with GB Player.

But text doesn't get smashed together :(

I will buy one of these, but only when we get an NES faceplate and when the price drops to or below $60. Or at least when I can defray the cost below that somehow.

Much like the GameBoy Pocket, I see absolutely no need for something that's just smaller, especially since it doesn't allow you to play GB or GBC games, it makes some games harder to play, and it's not easily compatible with connectivity games. For $100, there's just no real reason for me to even consider buying this, especially since I hardly own any GBA games. Considering the way the iPod brand is going, though, I can see how Nintendo could have decent success with the GBM.

Hmm. I read impressions that said that it did. If thats the case, I might snag on for a Christmas present to myself, from myself.

This is why nintendo will never go out of business (not that i want them to)... They keep selling the same thing over and over in different packages and nitendo fans keeps buying it.... I can't believe it.

All companies produce redesigns of successul platforms. It's why Nintendo, IBM, Apple, Sony and everybody else with a successful platform will never go out of business. Believe it.

wow so people are surprised the GBA micro is selling?

-GBA brand? check
- sexy machine ? check
- special edition treatment? check
- portability taken to the next level? check

can the PSP survive the two-way handicap match against both the DS and GBA micro in Japan? that is the question.

I'm in Tokyo right now for TGS and I disagree with this. I haven't seen anyone buy one besides the people I came here with. Every store I've been to has tons of them left.

And even i am moderately surprised
the Famicom Micro looks like it's sold out everywhere

and , for the record, it is the hottest looking hardware EVER.

:lol what?
Even if 200,000 were sold already, what are the chances that you would actually see someone buying one unless you stood in a store for a couple of hours?

As for the guesstimates at the beginning of the topic, one retailer said he had sold 70% of stock... it doesn't mean you can apply 70% to the 250,000 shipping estimate.

I'm surprised this isn't a complete sellout after day one.

The first day the Micro was announced, I was saying this to myself:

"If it's somewhere around 7800yen, I'll definitely get it".

Since the price has been announced at 12000yen, I am convinced and keep saying this to myself:

"I will never get one of these, until the price drops significantly."

However... as the day goes by, my desire for one of these is growing like mad! Especially after seeing the Famicom version (especially the back side of it, with the Mario engraving... and the whole box that holds the Micro), I am now almost crossing the line of resistance... Seems like Nintendo is using some sort of magic to trick me into getting my 3rd GBA...

Don't tempt me to buy this thing anymore...!

I want one too, but I just can't justify getting it at $100. It's a great idea for those who just want a GBA and don't care about the DS. But since I'm not one of those people, then whatever. When the price drops a bit I'll get one, just for collection purposes.

Ah, I was talking about the Micro. Thanks. Next week in the US? So soon? I must get one. :)

Well, considering I've been in probably (no joke at all) 80 game stores over the past couple days I'd say my observations are probably pretty accurate. There are stacks of the things everywhere, including the Famicom version. In contrast, today Advent Children went on sale and there were lines everywhere. The LTD. edition is already sold out.
