Gearbox Artist trashes Dragon’s Crown art style

mad_moxxi_original_nudes.jpg

Seriously, that's in game, it's not fanart or anything.

Go home Gearbox, you're drunk.
Ms Hamm
I'm sorry, but I didn't design, draw, or have anything to do with Moxxi at any point in my life. But if you're bringing her up, I'd say the main differences between her and something like the sorceress are that she's sexualized for a reason that makes sense, and that she actually resembles an actual person somewhat. I should clarify that it's not just a matter of the boobs themselves that makes it super weird, at least not for me. It's actually the tiny, featureless, expressionless face..Constructive criticism is always the best, but to say that an artist's work should be shielded "the worst of it" is a bit naieve, as even that can be informative if you're getting enough of it v: You open yourself up to that when you release something to the public,

At least she apologized for being an asshole.

Usually the people like her who are too eager to attack other people's work (without even offering constructive criticism) are the ones who don't accept criticism in their work.
I hope she's an exception though.

The reason people are mentioning the company she works for is, well, because she works there, and as a result she makes money from that company.

When she complains about someones sexualized art, when she is part of a company that makes *MAINSTREAM* games with this kind of art, and even more offensive stuff, it becomes a blatant act of hypocrisy.

If she was truly against it, she wouldn't work at a company that produces similar, or worse, art in mainstream games that is intended for a much larger audience.

Fertility idols have been around as long as art itself. They are always highly sexualized and have exaggerated parts of anatomy attributed to fertility. That doesn't justify the Sorceress because honestly it's an enormous stretch. The Sorceress doesn't have to have any reason to have big breasts beyond the simple fact that big breasts are appealing. Sorceresses have had big breasts in media for a long time, especially gaming.

Given that there are a multitude of references to art history apparent many of the designs in Dragon's Crown and previous works not limited to just goddesses, I would say it's not much of a stretch at all.

Duke Nuke'em gets a pass because A) MMeriika! B)Paycheck

its futile to try to change her opinion people will generally stand by their ludicrous contradictory comments.

all that's left is for the collective community to realize that shes just an idiot that fails to realize anything outside the immediate making snap judgement based on superficial points.

Besides the fact that this is a really dumb thing to say she is attractive anyway.

You know...I'm starting to worry we judged Bob just that tiny bit too harshly (probably not) - there is the SLIGHT chance he was referring to her femininity. (in that photo - but then again dragon's crown is a beatemup so).

So what if it even is? That won't justify shit to the people who seem to care about this. Fertility Idols are the definition of sexualized. That doesn't suddenly give the Sorceress a good reason to have enormous breasts and hips. It is the what it is, the game doesn't need to justify anything anything. People need to stop vehemently defending this, people will always have their opinions.

Female warriors in fantasy settings have always been depicted as beautiful scantily clad Amazons. This is nothing new. So, she has big breasts. Are we really that threatened by large breasts. You would think there are no women in the world above a b-cup.

My opinion on this matter is this - if an artist wants to draw a female character with a well developed chest, it is his right as an artist to do so. I don't have to like it, but I have no right to tell him he must change it.

Frank Frazetta was one of the greatest fantasy artists ever. Maybe we should start censoring his works as well.

The scantily clad beefy Aamzon must be a fucking trope by now. I agree with you.

The only party that comes out of this looking cool is the Dragon's Crown artist. His response was funny, it acknowledged the issue respectfully, and he looks like a grown ass man responding to some juvenile industry navel gazing. Everyone else, from Kotaku to the fired up commentators to the industry talking heads look like hyperbolic nerds.

he's talking about duke nukem, right?

Best.comeback.ever

About the game, wow newsflash guise! a japanese game with ridiculous character design! I can't believe it!

I'm not being apologetic, merely pointing out that as design goes this is fairly typical for japanese games, and really that will be the main market for that title so that's why.

dude..

nothing..

Absolutely we should be better. Again, I'm not endorsing the comment, and I myself would never be so blatantly mean-spirited. I just don't know why the hammer of justice fell on him so quickly when most of the time all have a merry laugh over in the OT when the same stuff occurs.

And yes, that IS what he was doing. That just didn't seem to be the main reason people were so upset by it.
No, it gets called out over in OT too.

He's an environmental artist. Why do people keep tying him to borderlands assists that he had nothing to do with? Shitty phrases aside the guy makes a pretty good point, but there are far bigger offenders to go after. Like that new side scrolling game that has the wizard lady with Hindenburg tits.

That design document of the positions of aliens raping women in DNF is absurd. Seriously, what the hell?

Playing catchup on the thread, but it seems the point she was trying to make was that the sexualized character designs will put women off to this game, and gaming altogether as a hobby.

My wife doesn't play games, so I showed her the sorceress character. Her response was as follows:

"Cool, what type of magic can she do?"

So then I explained to her the controversey and what this Gearbox artist had to say. Her response was as follows:

"It's a fantasy game, I mean, putting aside that an artist is bashing someone else's art, I have more of a problem with someone generalizing all women to say we would or should be offended by it. Also its art, so you are telling others they shouldn't appreciate it because you're projecting some meaning that's not there. It's messed up. Did it get cancelled?"

Me: No

Wife: "Good, it's a stupid argument."

^ Awesome.

I'm not sure that makes it any better.

Yeah, you're right.

It's slightly less insulting to criticize or point out specifically her modesty (if that's even right) than purely her looks though - if that was what he was doing...which seems unlikely. - but yeah not by much.

Femininity was the wrong word I think, since the characters aren't anyway, it doesn't make sense. Also discussing this is probably a bit insulting too. My bad. But still.

That's a keeper! ;)

I personally like a little variety in game artwork. If a game is released with an artstyle I don't care for, I may not play the game. What I will not do is find myself a soapbox to climb on to complain about how the art in that game has ruined my life and must be changed.

I like the artstyle of DC. It reminds me of reading old issues of Heavy Metal back in the day. Do I think real women look like this? No, I don't. But this is a fantasy game, these are not real women or men for that matter.

When was the last itme you saw a guy that looked like this? This is an exaggerated expression of the male form, yet no one is raging about this.

Seriously. Games developers/industry types have to stop talking. Outside of some PR speak and a limited number of knowledgeable developers who know what the hell they are talking about, everyone else needs gag orders.

No True Scotsman is the best of all logical fallacies. Good on your wife for catching that immediately.

Exactly. The entire art style is over the top. People simply focus on the female characters.

Cheers to her. I'd begun to forget what a rational response looked like.

As you can see it's pretty obvious why she's so upset

Not surprised at this response all. It became pretty clear pretty quickly that some people will do anything to silence anyone that dares say anything to criticise their precious oversexualised females characters.
