Gears of War 4 Microtransactions are Out of Control

this shit right here, why would you stop playing a game just because of this? i mean cmon, if you dont like the Microtransactions dont use them, the game is perfectly playable and probably the best gameplaywise on the franchise

Hmm maybe because I liked unlocking characters the old fashioned way, you know, like every other gears game before it? I never said it wasn't playable either. Asking for 100 bucks on top of paying for the game is preposterous and a little insulting.

Enjoy your modern AAA games: xp systems, grinding, tombolas, loot, carrots, fluff, economy, auctions, micro transactions and anything exploiting gamer's psychology and addiction.

It's just going to get worse and at some point it will be just be a giant casino in disguise.
And gamers will love it.

And smaller developers will still make the same great games they always did without the incessant reaching for your wallet.

Fuck 'modern' AAA.

Modern AAA gaming is doing just fine. Gears of War 4 seems to be very very unique in having a particularly awful economy / microtransaction system. We aren't seeing this problem with Forza Horizon 3, Mafia 3, Deus Ex Mankind Divided, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Halo 5, etc...

Most of those games have microtransactions but there's a way to make them fair and not insult the customer.

It's a little disappointing because The Coalition have otherwise made an incredible game. I hope they tweak the economy in the game to make it fair for everyone so they can enjoy the meat of the game, which is dripping in quality.

well tough luck, you dont unlock them that way anymore, is that reason enough to stop playing the game? i mean i want some characters too, but this system wont stop me from playing and eventually unlocking the fucking thing i want

Forza Horizon 3 does not have the issue discussed in this thread but has a form of modern game "disease" where players obsess more about leveling, getting xp and credits fast, complaining about tombola spins, grinding and min/maxing the game, than to race and enjoy the game at leisure pace. Because all the game mechanics encourages the former.

Can you clarify what you mean?

I put exactly 72 hours into Forza Horizon 3 and I didn't encounter what you're talking about. There are various ways to get XP and credits and wheelspins faster... (i.e. VIP pass, or getting Horizon Edition vehicles, or using skills points on the main menu, etc...) but none of that got in the way of enjoying the game for me.

So nobody here bought sports cards, Pokemon cards, or pogs growing up? Doesn't make microtransactions right but it isn't exactly a new concept. Part of the allure of cards always was the chance of getting something rare. Same thing here. That is why they give you the option to reveal all cards or one at a time.

I don't have a problem with it. If they shut down the store it wouldn't make the game any better.

Except that, like other have said, MT items are often non-transferable, untradeable, unsellable, and all you can do with unwanted/excess ones is to sell them back to the developers for a set price that only goes towards your next purchase, while you can do all of the above with trading cards (often even in the digital versions), on top of being told exactly the rarity distribution on the back of each pack of cards you purchase, most likely not out of the good in the companies' hearts but because they're required to disclose those odds while games still don't.

It's almost like trading cards, only the people running the show have a monopoly over the whole item economy (with no secondary market in most cases), and the odds and distribution of items can be tampered with at will because they are never actually required to disclose the odds, two practices which lead to abuse if left unchecked.

Then there's the whole whale milking optimization system that these models have put in place, and the fact that game design now comes after both economy design and player retention and manipulation techniques when it comes to anything microtransaction-related; all while the whole thing is completely unregulated.

But fine, just keep saying that the only thing wrong with these practices is the fact that the pack acquisition rates through regular gameplay is too slow. We have sure come a long way since the days of horse armor, and it's sad to see that people are oblivious to the ever-increasing abusive practices that are being tacked onto microtransaction systems and games in general nowadays.

I was wondering yesterday how much credits you do really get playing Horde. I only had time for two public games, so these are my findings:

Playing Normal: 57 Credits on Wave 10 and 79 Credits on Wave 20 (people left the game, so did I)
Playing Hardcore: 79 Credit on Wave 10 and 102 Credits on Wave 20 (we were obliterated on wave 25, by then we were only three, it was late so I left)

That took me around ~1.5h and I got 317 credit. Not saying it's great but neither terrible IMO. I realized yesterday how big is the difference between Normal and Hardcore. Not playing Normal anymore ^^

Has someone done a more detailed compressive list like the one I attempted above? I have not found any

Let me introduce this bullshit "Run the jewels airdrop"packs, 20$ for two random characters and weapon skins, two "Legends of Rap" lol, just WHAT THE FUCK ? ... Is it how we´ll have new characters now ? By spending real money when your Season Pass is completely empty and shit ? Fuck Coalition, those greedy Devs won't have a single $ From me, ever.

Did they realize how shitty their character lineup really is ? It's just iteration of the same characters over and over and if something should be free, it's definitely new characters, I don't understand Coalition/Microsoft politic on this shit, it's just the worst kind of Microtransaction after COD ones for sure, more big website need to talk seriously about those kind of shit, like really !!!

People, please, pretty please, STOP buying those crap, I don't want to tell you what to do with your money but just think about it a second how shitty it is and how much disrespectful this is from devs that put so low values on their base game and content to force you to put more money on their products, thank you.
