Gears Of War 4 multiplayer beta impressions and footage

Maybe add climbing up walls / more vertical levels. Mechs or vehicle combat would be nice or a jet pack maybe ? How about different character classes, Strong but slower, Faster but not as much health, and unique abilities for each class, things like that would be welcome.

Just something that makes it feel a little more fresher than just the same thing again.

2 it was the same animation just slowed down

Yeah, the first time playing the gears 3 beta it really freaked me out, then i really didnt notice it, but yeah Gears 3 roadie run animation is weird, you can see it mostly on the Default Gear multiplayre character

You're essentially changing Gears to the point where it's not gears anymore.
 
Unfortunately I feel Rod and the gang are in a tough situation here. Change it and you have those that say they have completely lost what Gears was all about. Don't change it and the same amount of people will say its more of the same.

Honestly to me it looks so far like Rod and his team are pushing for more of the same with some small changes and additions and I am very happy with that.

People also need to keep in mind this also is an actual beta with significant amounts of time to make changes after and before this game comes out in October. The polish phase probably hasn't even started yet and it certainly isn't part of the beta build.
 
The real test for The Coalition is the new game modes and features outside the core Gears gameplay, and so far Dodgeball sounds like something Epic would come out with for a sequel and Escalation sounds awesome.

I almost think active reload's damage boost should be replaced with an alternate fire method for each weapon as well as quick reload. That way you get an extra something for the active but an alternate fire can be balanced easier than a general damage boost. That's where I would go to change the formula personally.

The vault mechanics seem a bit worrisome but that stuff can be changed if it doesn't work. The main thing is that the core Gears gameplay (what makes Gears, Gears) remains solidly intact.

I don't think it's a small percentage after the response that Judgment got.

Anyway, I'm sure there will be changes but they aren't going to big/major to the point in which Gears 4 will feel completely new.

Definitely seems like they are going for the same tone as the first game (very dark) and honestly, doing what people expect out of a game that's part of a popular AAA series is a far safer bet than changing the game so much that it doesn't feel like it's a part of its own series.

Surprised at how clean it's looking too. 1080 60 and I haven't seen any aliasing.
 
Not sure why they have the time in PDT listed as 30 minutes earlier than the other two but this is what I found.

Feeling good about it today. There's a lot of negativity on the Gears of War forums and there's plenty of people posting in here without doing their homework, but it won't dampen my enthusiasm.

Curious to see how it plays.

It's baffling how many people don't get that you can iterate on a previous game without doing a bunch of shit to completely kill its identity. This whole "oh you guys want more of the same" argument is just played out garbage.

And this is coming from someone who thinks there are certain radical changes that would serve this ip better, but at the same time I do get people want the game series they've been following for years now. You have to respect that.

Gears 3 was great, so I'm pretty happy Gears 4 is looking to be a similar experience.
I dont like the looks of that new stage though. When you are the last man on your team standing (or if your team sucks, from the get-go), you need walls and stuff to hide behind. A map that visually open, will be a huge disadvantage in those situations.

Kinda stunning when people actually encourage other devs to follow mindless design trends. You know what Gears really needs is an xp unlock system! Maybe open world here too just throwin' out ideas.
 
It's a hard place for the coalition, they change too much and it's a new studio fucking with the gears formula, they don't change much and it's just another gears, it's a tough position for a new studio taking up a storied franchise as their first title. A bit like 343 with halo 4 people were harsh on them in some ways rightfully so with halo 4.

I don't mind a new team making changes but these changes should feel like something they actually want to do to improve the formula and not something they're doing because they're chasing goofy design trends.

I know you where joking about xp unlocks but they are popular for a reason, people like having overall goals and aims it's popular and why a lot of games use it.

I find the division system, way more satisfying when you go up a division level or a
division. It feels like you mastered the game better and just spend more time in it
acquiring exp point to unlock stuff.

People who like that stuff are the worst to cater to if you're actually trying to appeal to an audience that isn't made of marks willing to jump ship to another prettier game in less than a year.

It doesn't have to be those exact idea's, I was just throwing things out there.

People say they want to keep the close quarters combat style, that's fine, how about disarming your opponent and a bit of hand to hand combat, or knife fights. Doesn't have to be too in depth but something a little different.

How about more interaction with the Lancer Saw ? It looks to be the same automatic animation reused again. Maybe something like when you hit the Lance Saw, you can hold the stick in a different direction for a different kill, like cutting off arms, legs or heads.

You're throwing things out there and I don't think you've even spent more than a minute trying to picture how this would actually reasonably fit.

Maybe time to move on to a different game.

You do realise there's a new yank and shank move that allows you to pull people out of cover and set them up for an instant knife kill?

There's also a new shoulder-charge mechanic and ability to seamlessly vault over cover without breaking stride (if there's an enemy the other side it stuns them and opens them up for a kill).

We've only seen one new weapon and one new game mode too - there are a lot more to come.

I feel like a lot of people are watching the footage without really reading any information about the game.

Sure I know we haven't seen everything yet and those couple of changes are ok, I just hope there are more changes that's all.
 
With the amount of people comparing the Gears 4 Beta to Gears 3 visually, I wonder if Digital Foundry will do a comparison of them with their tech analysis? It would be interesting to compare them side-by-side.

It would be kind of sad if Gears 3 wins that. I recently fired it up and I was surprised by how great it still looks in both SP and MP. Especially the lighting and effects in general. All of that is missing in this footage, so let's hope it being pre alpha is the reason for that.
 
i am not usually one for hyperbole but honestly besides the IQ i am not really seeing an improvement in visuals over gears 3 at all
 
I really do hate the roadie run, it just makes no sense. I wish they'd straighten them up a little. Can't remember what game (will edit if I do) but I played something recently and thought "GoW should run like this, it'd fit".
 
Gears 3 remains my favorite multiplayer game of last gen. as a ps4 user now i was expecting Gears 4 to blow my mind and force me to get a xbox one... I know its still alpha but every video i see fails to impress me. Hope it gets better in the future, i really miss Gears.

This sounds good. As I said before, they certainly should have changed the animations. They re-used basically every asset from the previous games, and I'm disappointed on this.

then buy COD or Titanfall
climbing walls etc is NOT Gears
please Do Not change the game into another COD
