Gears of War has hi-octane sales in Japan

Indeed.

That's the marketing campaign for this game.

the marketing is a bad translation of a bad translation of a cover of mad world?

no wonder microsoft can't sell anything in japan.

It's a 'Z' rated game (in Japan) which kinda equates to an 'AO' rated game in the US, meaning, it ain't gonna sell squat (compared to the US release)

UNFAIR TRADE BARRIER, IMHO! Jeez, like it is any worse than the Japanese fighting games and the tentacle rape.

Ironicaly, I think Ghost in the Shell for now is exclusive to HD-DVD. Bandai stated in a press release iHD as one of the reasons for supporting HD-DVD. Sony and the Blu-Ray group made a big mistake not supporting this technology.

Except for the fact that Ghost in the Shell : Innocence is already out on bluray?
Nice try that has nothing to do with the thread though.
Different publisher.
Patlabor and Freedom are confirmed for HD-DVD because of HDi, and another site listed Cowboy Bebop and GitS for HD-DVD too. I think basically Innocence is on Blu-Ray purely because of Buena Vista's involvement. All the other movies are Bandai Visual only.

E (Everyone) = A
T (Teen) = B

Nothing stops Bandai from releasing on Blu-Ray, but HDi is a highly desired technology. When it came time time to vote for the interactive standards for HD-DVD HDi recieved 19 votes and Java 2. It was overwhelmingly choosen.

HDi was even won the majority vote in the Blu-Ray group as well, but was over ruled by higher powers.

I read somewhere that Ken Kutaragi likes Ghost in the Shell.

Grats on throwing some English sentence into Babelfish and producing some wacky nonsensical Japanese?

Anyway, this game does seem to be selling quite well for an Xbox 360 game in Japan. The stores around me are sold out of it as of yesterday, but I doubt they ordered many to begin with. Bigger stores generally have stock, though.

The day it came it, it seemed like everyone on my friend's list (Japanese people) had purchased it. Almost all of my friends were online and they were all playing Gears of War. This wasn't even the case with Blue Dragon.

I expect it to sell more than 30,000 units, but I will be surprised if it breaks 50,000 in its first week. I believe they initial shipped numbers are less than 100,000 anyway.

Also, only the top three pictures in the original post say anything about the game being sold out. The bottom two pictures are just descriptions / advertisements for the game.

I'm easily amused. And those were just the Mad World lyrics. I thought the idea of seeing the whole song being sung in another language was cute, but I didn't know how to post that.

Please don't tell me people are latching onto this as the next game to save the 360 in Japan.
It's the next game to be released in Japan. I think that's all we can call it. :p

When did it come out?

Probably has something to do with not wanting Microsoft to rule yet another piece of the digital world.

I always held out hopes for the game in Japan. It's too soon to tell but my fingers are crossed. 3rd person + Monsters + Polish could mean a hit! :)

Hey Cliffy, here's how to make Gears more popular in Japan:

- Make Marcus female
- Make armor pink, with plunging necklines
- Affiliate yourself with disposable large-chested Japanese pop star who will sing the "image song" which plays, uhh, during the final battle with RAAM or something

You haven't been posting enough lately. You cannot escape the GAF!

I do remember reading somewhere (your blog?) that the game was a hit with the Japanese press back at TGS(?).

What is your point? How many AAA games get AO in the USA? Zero. (Except for GTA:SA after the accident 'Hot Coffee' debacle.) AO is only for porno basically. As far as I know, nothing has ever gotten AO on violence alone in the USA. There has got to be Japanese games with as much violence as Gears. (Or are all their games like Mario?)

Wonder if the AO rating comes from the chainsaw attack? ResEvil4s 'decapitation' censorship springs to mind.

They have issues with severed limbs in general.

Impalements and disembowelments are OK, but no severed limbs.

It's not that strange, every culture has their own taboos that seem ridiculous to others. Think of the backlash towards nudity in North America. Boobs could scar a kid for life.
