Six months ago I was planning on picking this up the day it came out. The day is here and I'm not. I feel sort of bad :(

I was crazy for thinking the theatrical versions would be included.

FYI, it's coming out this Friday, not today.

Looked at that comparison site prior to the BD release and am now looking again.

Talk about useless additions for the sake of additions.. come on...

He doesn't even fit into that crevice with those added rocks!

Great art is created by acceptance of limitations, not in rejecting them and holding that the original intentions of the artist trump every and all consideration. The original trilogy was troubled and limited, yet it was wonderful. The new trilogy was safe and sterile, neat and tidy, and ultimately it was stiff and lifeless. Lucas has made his conception more important than the quality of the end movie. He vehemently hated how he was constrained and limited making the OT, yet he fails to see how those circumstances contributed to making such lean and evocative experiences.
Great points.

Has anyone mentioned Jaws? Jaws is a far more frightening movie because the shark has such limited screen-time. Because the damn thing didn't really work, Spielberg shoots and edits the movie with that in mind. Spielberg could go back and put in lots of shots of a CG shark swimming in the ocean and chewing on Quint, but would that actually improve the movie for anyone?

Yes, George Lucas.

Oh man, I just watched Vader's new "NOOOOOO" at the end of Return of the Jedi. Oh man, that was so unnecessary and took me straight out of the scene.

W...wait.

This is satire, right? I mean, those rocks are literally casting a flat drop shadow on R2.

I am so disgusted by these additional unnecessary changes. The whole situation is a mess, because he knows what his fans want (remastered theatrical releases), but won't give em to them because he knows that no one would buy his shitty rereleases again.

Official review from Blu-ray.com:

http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Star-Wars-Blu-ray/14903/#Review

Even though the reviewer slags on the changes, he gave the audio/video quality excellent marks, which confirms my purchase.

Blu-ray review
Movie 4.0 of 5
Video 4.0 of 5
Audio 5.0 of 5
Extras 4.5 of 5
Overall 5.0 of 5
"A third of the movies in the set look like crap, the changes are dumb and pointless, and one of the the movies looks like crap in a number of scenes, but it's Star Wars on Blu-ray dawg! 5/5 Must buy!!"

lol, this is worse than the average videogame review.

No it's just hubris. He could make even more money by bundling in the unmolested versions along with the molested ones.

This change doesn't even make sense. How did he fit in there? R2 isn't that precise in his movement and it is a tight fit. That literally looks like a crappy photoshop with a drop shadow.

R2 rocked first.

Edit: man those are some awfully added rocks.

What I am saying is that if Lucas gives the fans what they are asking for in one release, in the long run he will lose customers, as they won't keeping dipping in every time he releases his crappy updated versions because they got what they wanted already.

There's that, and the belief (Kanye-West-South-Park-style) that he is the greatest filmmaker of all time. It really is a combination of the two. Because he did release the unedited original films on DVD for a few months at an inflated price. But if it was a pure money grab, those editions would've been available for much longer. I think he really hates those.

The reviewer is talking strictly about the audio/video quality of the films, which is independent of how he felt about the changes or the artistic merits of the films. He also felt that the changes did not negatively affect his enjoyment of the films.

There will always be the next step up: VHS to DVD to Bluray to 3D Bluray to ???

He needn't worry about ever not being able to repackage his goods and sell them again.

Hang on a minute, the rocks that keep on giving?

pFn5E.jpg

Did they just duplicate and rotate elements of the original frame for their botch job of an 'enhancement' effect?

And still all of the complainers will spend away and pick this up, just like that cartoon earlier stated. And Lucas will again profit from all of this and never be given the financial blackout he deserves.

Well this complainer isn't.

Well, I'm not. I spent all my money on something else!

They just used Photoshop's content aware fill tool.

Actually, what I hate most about it, is that the rock doesn't even look right. For one, it looks really thin and flat. None of the other rocks look like that. Second, it's only PART of the rock that looks thin and flat - the top bit looks like it has depth, but then seems to have a weird drop shadow.

Special edition Jabba looked more real.

That's funny. I've complained about every set since the SE's back in the 90s and have never bought a single one of them. In fact, the last Star Wars merchandise I bought was Battlefront back in 2005, and that was just so I could murder Gungans.

The problem is the people who ARE resolute in not purchasing the Blu-ray due to the changes are outnumbered by those who don't give a rat's ass about the changes. Look at the Amazon page. Going by the reviews it looks like a bomba for Lucasfilm, and yet it's the number 1 best selling Blu-ray on Amazon. These people who are boycotting the release are just a drop in the bucket, sad but true.

Well.. I'm doing my part. Cancelled my pre-order 2 weeks ago and I'm not buying. I hope the rest of you can stay strong, especially with the marketing blitz in full swing and today being the release date.

My wife was clueless about why I would stay away from this, so I tried to put it in terms that she could understand. One of her favorite bands is the late 1970's rock band Styx. One of their biggest hits was a song called 'Come Sail Away'. I told her imagine if Dennis DeYoung and Tommy Shaw went back into the studio and recorded a new version of the song, added a new verse and new lyrics, and maybe changed the arrangement slightly.. and..oh, imagine if they said this was the only version of the song you would be able to purchase from this point forward because the old masters had been destroyed. Now, she's got plenty of copies of the original, but they're on vinyl and cassette tape. Too bad she doesn't have a vinyl record player in her car or even a cassette player anymore. If she wanted to hear the song while out on the road, she would have to buy the new digital altered version that she wouldn't care for. THEN SHE GOT IT, and has pledged to help me not fall off the wagon and give George Lucas anymore of our money.

Certainly seems like it. :(

So many SE changes are not only bad ideas but are bad ideas executed poorly.

I realise that Greedo shooting first is a dead horse at this point but this change exemplifies my point. Even if you accept Lucas' narrative justification for the change, Han's placid facial expression combined with his ridiculous head twitch make the scene totally ridiculous.

Neuromancer said:
I'd really like to know the rationale for changing the rocks in that scene.
"Back in 1977, we could only fit a maximum of six or so big rocks in a scene. But due to the wonders of modern technology, we can finally showcase the ten rock scene that the movie direly needed."

The best part is that those rocks are not in the immediately following shot of R2 coming out from the rocks.

edit: oh its mentioned on this page, but still lol.

Like Luke's lightsaber color when he's training on the Falcon, it was changed only for one shot that they used for the publicity of the Blu-rays and otherwise ignored.
