Get a Switch for BotW or PS4 for Horizon + P5

For a lapsed gamer take the switch!

It will have many awesome local multiplayer games and he can even take it to his work and play some mario kart with people there!
now I'm wondering how many people will get fired because of the switch...

If you're talking about value for money, it's definitely the PS4.

And you know it'll be future proof

1 very good game vs 10 very good games.

PS4. Better tech and better library. Zelda alone is one very good game. There are many very good games on PS4 and, as of yet, few on Switch by all accounts.

Guys would you trade a ps4 pro + horizon for Switch + zelda? I've been thinking this for a days... I want to play Zelda so much.

Well, there's way more open world games on PS4, and the system will still receive them. Who knows about Switch? Most likely very little.

Zelda may be the best game of the two consoles (and this is naturally subjective) but even so PS4 probably has a dozen games that are close to that quality.

It has to be PS4 at the moment.

If he doesn't like Zelda (I know, I know, it's a hard concept for some to imagine) then he has very few other options on Switch.

If he doesn't like Horizon and P5, he has hundreds of other options.

PS4 feels like the no-brainer here.

I think it depends on exactly what type of gaming your cousin enjoys. Seeing as he has a gaming laptop, does he put value in taking his games with him when he goes on a trip? In that case, the Switch fits well to his personal needs. That is of course offset by the fact that the PS4 has a better library of games available at this moment, especially in the open world genre: the Switch has Zelda, my favourite game of at least the last few years, but the PS4 trumps the Switch in sheer numbers: Horizon and FFXV are great titles for an open world enthusiast, although the latter could definitely appear on PC natively at some point, and there are many other genres that have great games (Persona, R&C PS4, UC4 etc.). So, I would recommend making a decision about his lifestyle before choosing one or the other, and to remember that the choice should be between exclusives for the systems (since he has a gaming laptop already). If he benefits a lot from portability, then consider the Switch + Zelda, otherwise the PS4 seems like a very good choice as well.

Honestly, it depends on whether you have games on the PS4 you want to play still, either from its available library or from its future games. The Switch has some big titles coming this year and beyond (Zelda, Super Mario Odyssey, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Fire Emblem), while the PS4 has some big ones as well (TLOU2, Death Stranding, Days Gone, God of War, Detroit Become Human), as well as having a built-in certainty that third party AAA will come. So, if you don't have an alternative third party system (like a PC) and are definitely interested in them and in the PS4's coming exclusives, then I would keep the system. If not, then the trade-in you propose seems like a good deal.

Switch for sure . From what you say, he will enjoy it much more due to the portability. Zelda is damn good .

PS4 offers soo much more at a lower price, Switch offers very little you can't play elsewhere and will continue to for awhile. PS4 easily, I'm sure the Switch will come good soon, but the PS4 is extremely good now.

I suppose one question is..does he game on a laptop because he likes the convenience of being able to take the laptop around with him and game anywhere?

...if so then the Switch might be the obvious answer.

If he's happy/able to just game at home on the tv..then get the PS4.

Persona 5 next Tuesday, don't do it.
Zelda is great and all, majestic even, but just buy it and don't trade your Pro away.

PS4. It has a huge library of games, including lots of 2+ year old titles that are extremely discounted and still good.

Get an Uncharted bundle for cheap. Or some other bundle and buy Uncharted since it's quite discounted now. I see lots of shops discounting their PS4 bundles to clear the shelves for the next bundle (e.g. getting rid of old uncharted stock to make room for new horizon bundles).
It's not open-world, but it has some large environments and really showcases "next gen" graphics and production values. I think it's a really easy game to pick up and "learn to play" if your cousin hasn't done much gaming.

If your cousin likes open world RPGs, get Witcher 3 since it's super-cheap now.

The Switch seems better than I expected, but it's just an expensive Zelda machine right now. I'd wait for more games and a second-revision and/or price cut before I could recommend it. Unlike PS4's discounted surplus stock, the Switch has more demand than supply, so everything is at full MSRP prices.

Yeah I've a pretty good PC and I've played every ps4 exclusive except Persona 5. I don't know, the switch being portable is what I want honestly because I know I will replay Zelda so many times in portable mode.

Also I do plan to buy a switch later this year when xenoblade 2 releases if I don't get one first.

OP, Your cousin will not be thanking you in a few months time when he has use an app on his phone to voice chat his switch.

The PS4 has way more Open World games now than Switch would probably have in it's lifetime.
Practically every single AAA multiplatform game (assuming Switch actually gets much, anyway) will be better on the PS4 and there is the chance the games will cost more.

Just get a PS4 and your cousin can wait till next year for Switch.

Oh dude come on. We all agree PS4 is the way to go here but this reasoning is nonsense.

Maybe wait and see if they announce a bundle or a trade in deal and play P5 in the meantime? Could get super burnt-out playing Xenoblade 2 and Zelda back-to-back though.

I see, I will say that the portability of the Switch works very well for me. I have bought the system for Zelda and for Mario Kart at the end of April, so for me getting it at launch was a no-brainer basically. You could for example wait for Persona 5, play that and some other games that come out before the end of the year, and then trade the system in towards the end of the year when Xenoblade launches. Or if God of War is a must-play title for you, you could wait a bit longer and do a trade-in somewhere next year. It's your choice in the end.

None of the bolded is relevant since OP's cousing has a gaming laptop already. Accounting for that, the statement about PS4 having more (exclusive) open world games that the Switch will ever have also becomes an uncertain claim.

BotW is one of the greatest games ever made.

But buy him a PS4. Seriously.
These forst replies are depressing af.

Dude has a gaming laptop. PS4 has some dope exclusives and all, but you can't beat a PC and a Nintendo Switch.

Homie likes open world games, so he should play Witcher 3 on medium settings (which still look fucking beautiful for what it's worth) on his laptop, and get a Switch for Zelda.

That little combo of games gives an open world fan 300+ hours of fun.

Sure, but I'd always advise to get a PS4 first. It's the console to have this gen. No question.

I don't really disagree, but it is important I think to realise that the PS4 being the system to get is imo a combination of its vast reach of third party support and its exclusives. Imo a Nintendo system will have better exclusives at the end of its lifetime compared to a Playstation system, so if the person in question has a PC to play third party, the latter comparison becomes by far the most important. In that comparison, at the moment PS4 definitely has a leg up compared to Switch, but I think at the end of both systems' respective lifetimes the Switch will have a leg up. In that sense, there is definitely a discussion to be had about which is best for OP's cousin, especially with portability being a possible selling point.

Nintendo fan boy here. However, if hes not a gmer, better to introduce him to the console with the most varied collection of games.

Ps4 with gta5 and horizon.

PS4, with all the great titles it offers so much choice and fierce competition will enable him to buy software at substantial discounts, enabling him to build a great catalog in little time.

It's hard to argue against PS4. It's overflowing with awesome games right now, and Persona is right around the corner.

For myself, I have a PS4, a PC, and a Switch, and largely my PS4 is a netflix machine now. PC for multiplats, and Switch for just being portable, which is super, super helpful for an overworked dad of twins - I can squeeze in a couple of minutes of distraction on Zelda, or whatever. Switch is a totally awesome machine.

Depends, how much is he attached to the new job?

If you don't care if he loses it get him the PS4, the back catalog alone should be enough to get fired from three jobs. :)

OTOH, the Switch only has 40-80hrs of distraction right now, a much safer career choice :P

Switch. Everyone needs to experience BOTW. It's just one of those games.

As someone who's finished Zelda and loved it, get him the PS4 and Horizon.

What exactly do you mean with "not a console gamer"? Does he have a PC? If so despite Uncharted, Bloodborne and Horizon (which I am just listing, didn't enjoy it and wouldn't recommend it) there is not much to get on PS4 that he can't get on his PC while the Switch has Zelda and a few cool Indies for now if he needs more. If he doesn't play on PC get him the PS4.

PS4 easily. Even if the cousin has a great laptop that covers all the multiplatform games the PS4 has over three years worth of exclusives at this point. The Wii U would honestly be a better gift than Switch at the moment if you're going Nintendo.

I want to get my cousin a nice present for getting his first job... he only has a gaming laptop says he likes open world RPG type games and I want to spend around $350

So is a $300 Switch and BotW better than a cheaper $250 PS4 with 2 games (Persona 5 and Horizon)?

21 years old, not a huge console gamer and last had a PS1 as a kid I believe.

If he likes open world RPGs then the choice should be easy, go with a platform that offers you already a lot of games from that genre, e.g. Witcher 3, Horizon, Fallout, Skyrim etc.

I suppose it ultimately boils down to how passionate your cousin is about Zelda, but I look at that sentence and to me it's a no-brainer. The cheaper console with more horsepower and value to offer seems like the obvious choice to make in my eyes. And then you look beyond P5 and H:ZD to the other exclusives the system has available and... yeah.

Get them all!!

I would get Switch for Zelda, and PS4 for Persona 5. I liked Horizon, but I have the feeling that the other games are much better.

As someone who has gone down the gaming laptop route in the past, it is one of the worst options for high performance gaming, in my opinion.

PS4 is something you get for yourself.

A Switch as a gift is perfect because it is the newest toy and hard to find, making it a great get as a gift.

Guys would you trade a ps4 pro + horizon for Switch + zelda? I've been thinking this for a days... I want to play Zelda so much.

Is the Pro just for Horizon and nothing else that you really want to play? If so that would be an easy choice. Yes, if you als are looking forward to Xenoblade, Mario or what else Nintendo announced.

But you can also wait, sell Horizon, keep the Pro and get switch later this year in a bundle that is a little bit cheaper?

Let's be honest. You can't play BOTW on the PS4. Breath of the Wild absolutely mops the floor with anything on the PS4.
However, right now PS4 just has more games so I'd say go with PS4.

That's a good point, I didn't really think about that. Considering OP's cousin is seemingly out of the loop, chances are that his laptop is indeed outdated and possibly unable to play current gen games acceptably. I remember my gaming laptop I got in 2012 (not an expensive one, but still) running 2011 games (Skyrim to be exact) at 30ish fps at low settings, so they really do go out of date quite quickly.

Wut. You're selling the PS4's lineup very short. The following games are all good/fantastic and quite varied (I'm including ports/remasters since you mentioned Zelda):

  • Nioh
  • The Last Guardian
  • Ratchet & Clank
  • Dragon Quest Builders
  • Until Dawn
  • Yakuza 0
  • Persona 5
  • MLB The Show
  • Gravity Rush Remastered
  • Gravity Rush 2
  • The Last of Us Remastered
  • Resogun
  • Tearaway Unfolded
  • God of War III Remastered
  • World of Final Fantasy
  • Driveclub
  • Kingdom Hearts HD I.5 + II.5 Remix

There's something there for almost everyone, including the games you listed.

Let's be honest. You can't play BOTW on the PS4. Breath of the Wild absolutely mops the floor with anything on the PS4.
However, right now PS4 just has more games so I'd say go with PS4.

But Bloodborne is better than Breath of the Wild. : p

PS4 obviously has a much larger library of quality games, but BOTW is probably the best game of all time, it's pure magic in video game form.

PS4, much larger and varied library for him to choose from. Switch is hard to come by right now and while BOTW is great, its still only 1 game, and seeing as its the more expensive and harder to find console, bang for your buck PS4 is the better buy.

To be honest? Ask him. He's not a huge console gamer so you might end up getting the wrong thing by just assuming.

Guys would you trade a ps4 pro + horizon for Switch + zelda? I've been thinking this for a days... I want to play Zelda so much.

If you really like it, go for it. I would never trade mine though.
