Get a Switch for BotW or PS4 for Horizon + P5

I'd much rather have a single game of the generation-tier title like Zelda over other merely decent games that I really don't care to spend time with. I've been PC-only this gen (and very easily I might add) but Zelda is tempting me pretty hard. Console-style single-player games really do nothing for me these days which is why nothing on PS4 even registers on my radar (aside from Bloodborne but I've played enough souls for a lifetime). These days I find myself only wanting to spend my limited time on competitive multi-player, strategy or neat sims like Poly Bridge, or otherwise super spectacular/interesting gameplay in general.

I don't know your cousin but if he's one of those types that exclusively plays something like LoL or other non-console games a PS4 really isn't gonna see much use.

I'd say go for a PS4 simply because it already has so much software and he will be able to play all big third party releases, but like the above says, you may be best just asking him. I think Zelda looks amazing, but IMO it's not quite enough to support a whole console just yet.

Guys would you trade a ps4 pro + horizon for Switch + zelda? I've been thinking this for a days... I want to play Zelda so much.

Nah. Remember Zelda has a bunch of DLC coming this year and its pretty likely a game of the year edition including everything will release later this year.

Just sit tight, enjoy your PS4 and then enjoy the great Switch bundle you get in a few months.

If you havent tried Splatoon yet, then take the leap and get a Switch. Splatoon 2 and Arms (plus some Mario Kart) all in the next few months plus portable indies sound like everything you would want in a Console experience.

Do you game on PC tho? If not, PS4 for now. Switch for future games.

But if you want the perfect Zelda game (and don't have a WiiU) Switch is perfect. MK8D comes soon as a decent follow up.

Switch has Breath of the Wild now and Xenoblade X2 next year, along with Fire Emblem coming and perhaps he likes the Dynasty Warriors Spinoff that comes later this year too.

PS4 has a ton of games, no one can argue against that and it's priced pretty low currently, certainly a great time to get the console. Nier is awesome but he might be able to play that on his computer/laptop perhaps. Persona 5 is looking like a masterpiece that can rival Zelda, however it's not your classic "western style" action RPG and Horizon is no slouch eather.

Speaking only value-wise the PS4 is the best choice, he seems to like it mobile though, having a laptop? Then the Switch might be the best choice. I'm sure he will be happy with either of them as Zelda might be the only title right now but it is good enough to appeal to almost anyone and even justify having a console for it alone...

BotW may very well be the best game ever created, and for me personally it alone was worth the Switch price of entry, but in general the PS4 is a much better console with a much better game library of course. You need to REALLY LOVE Nintendo/Zelda for a Switch to be worth owning right now IMO.

Right now PS4 hands down.

The Switch is new and has one amazing and we all know Nintendo will release more great games.

It comes down to having a great library now and more great games that are coming to new console which we have no idea how the potential line up is going to be like.

Others may disagree, but I've always thought buying a console for one game to be pretty stupid.

Wait on the Switch until there's more games and better bundles.

Let's be honest. You can't play BOTW on the PS4. Breath of the Wild absolutely mops the floor with anything on the PS4.
However, right now PS4 just has more games so I'd say go with PS4.
In your opinion , right?
I have Zelda and it's 3rd or 4the on my goty list right now. Still haven't got to p5 yet and Red Dead is coming too.

I'm currently playing Zelda and it's absolutely amazing. So buy the one that plays the best game of the generation.

Get a PS4 for Nier Automata. And some other decent games I guess

Right now: PS4
1 Year from now: PS4
3 Years: PS4
10 Years: PS4

Not even close. Playstations always have best most varied console gaming libraries.

For a Zelda fan Switch + Zelda would be a no brainer (not just because it's the latest Zelda but because it's such an awesome one) , but ouside of that it's going to take some time for Switch to be fleshed out so PS4 being a mature platform with a really nice catalogue has obviously better value right now.

BOTW will probably end up somewhere on my top 5 GOAT list with RE4 & Metroid Prime & Portal, but I will echo everyone else and say get him a PS4. It has such a stellar library.

My PC, with the new Torment game installed on it, has not been turned on a single second since march 3rd.

Switch & zelda are that good

dont be swept up by the launch hype,
a better time to buy the switch would be a 'new' revision and if youre really impatient ,
get one in the holiday season if they release mario and xenoblade on time.
youll find better bundles, its gonna gather dust till then anyway once youre done with zelda

Is this one of the thread where they all come out of woodwork?

Switch for one game

PS4 for many games

Let's be honest. You can't play BOTW on the PS4. Breath of the Wild absolutely mops the floor with anything on the PS4.

It's not even the best Wii U game...

Does he likes games like persons 5?
Does he likes games like Mario kart and station?

I bet he does not only play rpgs.
Get him the console he will most likely enjoy.
As a main pic gamer, switch seems to be the more obvoius choices. But maybe he dislikes the switch hybrid aspect. And low power.

Way to less information mister op

There are a lot of really good comments in here for either consoles. And it is awesome of you to get your relative a present for getting their first job OP.

I would have to say PS4 slim. As much as I love Botw and Switch, getting that would prove quite the effort. Maybe come back to the Switch later once they become more available-- or your cousin can get one himself. They shouldn't miss the opportunity to get Botw.
Switch for one game

PS4 for many games..
Basically what this poster said. PS4 has more library available

Hard to vote against Zelda BOTW, but consider that $360( cost of Switch + Zelda) can basically get you a Ps4 slim WITH Uncharted 4 bundled, P5 and Horizon. That's on top of the proven library and place in the market. Unless your cousin has an affinity for Nintendo, Zelda, or portability, it's a pretty easy choice IMHO.

Or, maybe try to strike up a general conversation with him about the consoles and see which one he seems to gravitate towards.

Zelda and switch are awesome, but my switch is pretty much just sitting there waiting for new games now. If you get a ps4, you can play a shit ton of amazing games out already.

If you don't care about the portability of Switch, the PS4 is a better option. There is a big back catalog now, and the games also go for much cheaper as they get older. Keep an eye out for PSN sales and you'll get lots of value for your money. More games than you can play.

Nintendo never discounts any of their games ever, which turns me off their systems. It already sucked for me to buy a 3DS this year for Pokemon, while all the games are still full price everywhere.

Wut. You're selling the PS4's lineup very short. The following games are all good/fantastic and quite varied (I'm including ports/remasters since you mentioned Zelda):

  • Nioh
  • The Last Guardian
  • Ratchet & Clank
  • Dragon Quest Builders
  • Until Dawn
  • Yakuza 0
  • Persona 5
  • MLB The Show
  • Gravity Rush Remastered
  • Gravity Rush 2
  • The Last of Us Remastered
  • Resogun
  • Tearaway Unfolded
  • God of War III Remastered
  • World of Final Fantasy
  • Driveclub
  • Kingdom Hearts HD I.5 + II.5 Remix

There's something there for almost everyone, including the games you listed.

But Bloodborne is better than Breath of the Wild. : p

Yeah yeah... sure sure : d

This must be a joke from that other thread with the OP trading in their PS4 and Vita plus $50 on top for a Switch. That's a bad deal, you can wait and play Zelda later, the Switch ain't going nowhere and you have a great library on PS4 already.

Wouldn't be a console recommendation thread without some good old hyperbole.

How about a $350 gift certificate?

If that's a no then I guess a Switch? My PS4 hasn't been turned on in over a year and when I turned it on it was just to go to the Play Room. If he has a gaming laptop I think he's good on those types of games. Is he a social person? Maybe he could take the Switch to work and play with his new coworkers to get closer to his colleagues faster... if he's the inside/personal space type of guy then, yeah I still recommend the Switch just because it's different. It's like, sit down and play his laptop or sit down and play the PS4. The Switch might convince him to get up and go out?

I don't know - ask him.

I have played every Zelda game except SS and BotW, and I have finished maybe half of them, and would recommend a third. I think they're excellent if not slightly overrated games.

Bloodborne is the first game I ever platinumed. I get excited when a friend picks it up and wants me to jump in and help them so I have something to do in the game.

I could never try to rank Bloodborne and Zelda against each other, because they are so different. But Bloodborne is a FUCKING excellent game. I think it will be looked back on as one of the generation-defining greats.

Wait for the Switch to mature, go down in price, and have a more robust library.

The PS4 has a fantastic selection of titles, including the ones you mentioned. It's the better bang for the buck, IMO.

Easy choice.

If he has a gaming laptop he might like portable gaming and the Switch is the only one with that option.

PS4 has some great games but meh, Horizon isn't really amazing or anything, just a real polished Ubi style open world game with a better than usual story.

Depending on how often you play and how much of a completionist you are, Horizon + P5 could set you up until autumn. I put 63 hours into Horizon alone.

I'm one of the few people that liked Horizon over BoTW. Also, after finishing that game, my Switch is gathering dust. So yeah, get a PS4 for me.
