Get a Switch for BotW or PS4 for Horizon + P5

PS4 offers a greater value atm, so I'd go with that, but I'm sure if the Switch will be worth it down the road. Buy the PS4 now, save for a Switch later when it maybe drops in price.

Too many great games on PS4 right now:

- Nier
- Ni Oh
- Persona 5
- Gravity Rush 1&2
- Yakuza 0
- Horizon
- Bloodborne
- Untill Dawn
- The Witcher 3 (dunno if he played on his pc)
- FF XV

I know the Switch is awesome and Zelda is one of the best games ever, but i think the PS4 has more to offer right now, the Switch could be a killer console, but i would wait untill the end of the year to get one

A console with a bunch of really good games out now or a console with one really good game out now.

PS4. Just get a Switch later on when more games are out and they're easier to find.

PS4 and PC have huge overlap in games (PC has better versions) both are primarily for stationary gamers

Switch is a unique gift

There are so many PS4 exclusive that even a PC gamer shouldn't miss out. If you're buying a gift for someone, PS4 is a no-brainer. I wouldn't buy a Switch for anyone unless I know for sure that person is a Nintendo fan.

console at launch with 1 great game vs console with a variety of great games. If they mean Open World RPGs on PC they might mean Skyrim, which makes me wonder if they would even like the more cartoony style of Zelda vs something like Horizon

As the kid is also going to be working now, sitting home gaming will become less of an option, based off what many other busy people have said, the Switch portability allows them to enjoy gaming more, and with greater flexibility

More I think about it more I think the Switch

I am also a PC gamer

Seeing value mentioned...gifts shouldn't be about value IMO

Plus, what's the monetary value of playing Zelda near release on a new console?

Are the only people expected to buy a Switch those who already own a console and if so can Nintendo sustain themselves on that?

As a Switch + BotW owner, and a PS4 + Horizon + NieR + soon to be P5 owner, my vote must be cast for the PS4. As great as BotW is, the Switch will not offer another open world experience until the re-release of the re-released Skyrim, and Xenoblade 2. PS4 open world RPG's, obviously Horizon, The Witcher, said Skyrim re-release, you name it. P5 and NieR are both exceptional, must own titles. Can't go wrong there.

Switch may be a better deal because the difference in games between Switch and PC will eventually be more drastic than the difference between PS4 and PC.

Currently though, in the short term, I think PS4 may be the better option.

That might be true...but there is additionally such a quantity of fantastic PS4 exclusives, that no other current platform will be able to match.

This. OP has confirmed that open-world RPG's are a favorite genre for recipient. Switch has three open-world RPG's confirmed, one of which is a re-release, the other is quite possibly and arguably
the best game ever made
, and the other feels like it is so far away unfortunately.

Sure, if the Switch can attract all the handheld fans. The Switch is a replacement for my Vita as a portable indies machine right now.

This is possibly the worst time to say that, considering PS4 just got a big bundle of games and more upcoming that as far as we know aren't coming to PC. Persona 5, Nioh, Yakuza 0, Yakuza Kiwami, Gravity Rush 2, Horizon etc and all that. I think OP said his friend like Open World games/RPGs. So it's really a no brainer. I still don't think Zelda, one open world game is worth 360 dollars

The Switch has two of the top 3 best games of all time:

Zelda BotW and The Binding of Isaac

I think the choice here is obvious.

get him a ps4

I game on my PC a great majority of the time and this is poor advice, frankly.

I'm one of the few who's not terribly enamored by Breath of the Wild, so I say PS4. The catalog of exclusives this year alone will keep him busy for quite some time, and the previous years' exclusives will be a blast to enjoy as well.

I would surprise him with a card explaining that you want to take him to a store and spend your budget of $350 on video games for him. Let him pick out what he wants.

Coming back to this thread, most people are looking at the value proposition but at the same time I keep focusing on OP's cousin not being a console gamer and being 21. OP, would he even play the PS4 if you got it for him? I think usage matters. Yeah it's a better value but will he use it? Is the gaming laptop capable of playing current titles with decent performance? Has he shown interest in a PS4?

I want to get my cousin a nice present for getting his first job... he only has a gaming laptop says he likes open world RPG type games and I want to spend around $350

So is a $300 Switch and BotW better than a cheaper $250 PS4 with 2 games (Persona 5 and Horizon)?

21 years old, not a huge console gamer and last had a PS1 as a kid I believe.

ps4 all the way...and can I be your cousin:) jk...you're an awesome cousin

PS4 easily, this shouldn't even be a question, even if BOTW is the greatest game of all time it's the only game at the moment on the Switch that fits the open world criteria maybe future games will be great but you're guessing at this point, PS4 has games that are a known quantity that you can look up and are available to get straight away.

BotW looks amazeballs, but ATM PS4 offers the best value and the best library for what games he likes (Witcher 3, Horizon, Nier: Automata).

Get him a Switch. I mean yeah the PS4 is the obvious choice for open world games and in general has all the third party games he might want. But the fact he still doesn't have a PS4 tells me he's not going to be much of a late night console gamer anyway. The Switch will probably suit his lifestyle better and get him to actually play games.

I think, I really can't tell from such a ludicrously sparse OP, like how should we know your cousin better than you do come on now.
