Get a Switch for BotW or PS4 for Horizon + P5

Let's be honest. You can't play BOTW on the PS4. Breath of the Wild absolutely mops the floor with anything on the PS4.
However, right now PS4 just has more games so I'd say go with PS4.

He'll be able to play BotW on his laptop using CEMU with much better framerate and graphics, meanwhile he can catch up on all the games he's never played on his new PS4.

Zelda is fucking amazing, but it's just one game. I personally sold my Switch after finishing it. PS4 on the other hand has a large library of great first and third party games, so in terms of value there is absolutely no contest. Go with PS4.

Does library even matter when he already has a gaming laptop?
Just ask him between Zelda and Horizon, which one he wants to play.

Horizon is not the only worthwhile exclusive on PS4 , come on. There is a heck of a lot more to play on it that is not on PC, and unless he has a gaming laptop it;s moot.

This thread has been surprisingly realistic about the Switch.

The PC is the only wrench in this situation, but being open to Persona 5 throws it back to the PS4 as a solid win. If you like Persona 5, you probably would glance at Yakuza, Final Fantasy Blank, and a number of games from Japan that are not available on the PC.

Well, the premise of the thread is Zelda vs. Horizon and P5, and in that context it's really no contest. Most people seem to be (sensibly) addressing it as platform vs. platform, however.

Zelda > Horizon.

Buying a Switch even if it's just for Zelda is totally worth it. I'm not hating on Horizon because I really enjoyed it but it doesn't come close to Zelda and there is no way I'd ever buy a PS4 just to play it.

I want to get my cousin a nice present for getting his first job... he only has a gaming laptop says he likes open world RPG type games and I want to spend around $350

So is a $300 Switch and BotW better than a cheaper $250 PS4 with 2 games (Persona 5 and Horizon)?

21 years old, not a huge console gamer and last had a PS1 as a kid I believe.

I would say the PS4 BUT, he uses a gaming laptop? Does he spend much time at home or would playing on the go be essential to his lifestyle? If that's the case, get him a Switch instead. Better to find out first though.

As a PC gamer, I would still recommend PS4. Incredible library with great games exclusive to ps4 (OUT NOW). You can get a switch later when more games come out.

Pretty good point. Good chance he's played or pretty aware of the ps4 by now. What you think the odds are if he wanted it by now her would have got it? You could also just talk about zelda in passing and feel out his response.

You could say the same about Switch. If he didn't buy a Wii U for Zelda maybe he's not interested in it.

Hmm, I would probably base the decision on his personality and likes? For example, I tried to retrofit your situation to my group of friends. It became really simple what system I would get whom as it boiled down to what they are into outside of games. Some of them are super into Star Wars, well that right there would default my choice to a PS4 for the upcoming Battlefront II. Some of them are very inexperienced gamers, and lack the finesse to control games that demand a lot of player agency with controls -- in this cade I would get them the Switch.

The fact that your cousin had a PS1, ask him if he used to play Crash -- that might be a delight to re-play on PS4. Fortunately I feel like you can do no wrong lol... the PS4 already has an awesome library, and with the Switch you start him with one of the best games of this gen.

Well, he had a Ps1 and is a pc gamer.

Maybe he doesn't care for Nintendo or Zelda at all? Otherwise he would've owned a Wii, at the very least...

Nobody in their right mind would buy a Wii U just to play Zelda, when you can get it on Switch instead.

Zelda was announced years ago before anyone knew what a Switch was. With that knowledge in your head go reread what I typed.

Not even remotely the same, outside of super hardcore zelda fans, very few people bought a wiiu for zelda, certainly not someone who hasn't had a console since ps1.

It's absolutely the same. If they didn't buy a Wii U back when BotW was announced as a 2015 title why would they suddenly be interested in a Switch? They even ignored Wind Waker HD, Twilight Princess HD, and a Zelda themed console. But they might want Switch to play Zelda? Makes no sense.

Ha. Sure.

PS4+Horizon+P5+probably Uncharted 4 due to a bundle is definitely the easy choice compared to BoTW+Switch. The PS4 deal probably cost the same, if not less, as you'd probably want to pick up a Pro controller too. I don't see how anyone can argue otherwise, unless they're just a huge Zelda fan.

Switch

It's fun and portable

Plus has hype around it which they may enjoy being a part of

PS4 is without a doubt the better value. I cannot stress this enough.
Switch can wait. Don't fall for the hype. Let Nintendo first prove themselves with quality and quantity of software.
They have had difficulties with this in the past.

A handheld with one game versus a console with a huge library of great games.

This is not a hard decision. Buy the Switch in a year or so when it has anything else worth playing.

I mean, fucking Persona 5. I'd personally buy that over any Zelda.

1) Breath of the Wild launched on Wii U and Switch the same day. Maybe he isn't the type of person that buys a system before a game has released on it? I don't either.
2) Because some people actually wait for a game to be available to get a system?

That's why I want to know if he's an on the go player or at home player. He has a gaming laptop, so it could suggest he isn't at home that much.

People are acting like Zelda will cure cancer, crazy hyperbole...I am more excited for persona alone, and I loved BOTW. Ps4 is a no brainer here. It's not like persona 5 alone isn't nearly as good as zelda, then you add everything else into the mix, easy decision.

I know this is likely bait, but can you please explain what you mean by this?

You're right. Who would buy a PS4 to just play Horizon. You can also play P5, Uncharted 4, Tales of Berseria, Yakuza 0, Nioh, The Last of Us, Bloodborne, FFXV, Sword Art Online, Order 1886.....etc, etc, etc. Sure, none of them have an arbitrary "97" metacritic, though P5 comes close with a 94, that's still a hella ton of quality in different forms than just a giant sandbox of [not]endless adventure of BOTW.

There really isn't any sensible reason to go with a Switch over a PS4 right now, unless you're -only- interested in BotW.

The Switch undoubtedly has a good future ahead of it, but its current library is essentially one game, whereas the PS4 has an amazing catalogue right now.

Get a PS4 now, wait for the Switch to mature.

@OP
How about you casually talk about video games, the PS4 and Switch with your cousin. You'll likely find out what he thinks of each console.

It's amazing but come on

We're going to get another 5 years of Nintendo fans overcompensating with absurd hyperbole just like they did with Wii U. Get used to it. Zelda is one of the best games ever made, but it doesn't invalidate systems that have tonnes of great to incredible titles.

We are adhering strictly to what the OP said, which is Switch + BOTW or PS4 +Horizon + P5.

Again, we are concentrating on the premise presented by the OP, which is limited to Horizon, P5 and BOTW.

Yeah - this result will help him more than asking on GAF.
I mean PS4 is the established against. a just released console - unless he is a Zelda or big Nintendo/Handheld fan there is no reason for anything but a PS4.

Then again...if he didnt own a single console since the PSone i doubt he cares to much about gaming to begin with.

Has OP been involved in this thread since the first post? Can't say I've noticed and this seems like the perfect bait question.
