GFWL Thread

I've played RE5 six times with five different co-op partners. Love that game, and will find it an unending tragedy if it dies (can you currently connect to a partner online without using GfWL?).

Still very puzzling why MS is killing off GFWL. How can a company just up and abandon a platform they basically built? It makes no sense. Yes it was terrible in a lot of ways but it could have been fixed with some effort.

That's nothing new to Microsoft. You should read up on how they handled the Windows Mobile platform when the success of iPhone caused them to panic.

Man, this whole GFWL shutdown has been a giant mess. Though I guess it's a good test to see which publishers give a fuck about consumer satisfaction and who's just interested in taking money and running.

I'm glad that it has been a mess. The worse Microsoft handles GfWL the less likely it is that they can ever try something similiar again.

You can easily play Bulletstorm without GFWL, there's a couple of hacked DLLs you can get for it to work, even tried it myself and played a few chapters with it. I'll see if I can find the link again.

EDIT - Found it. Fifth post from the bottom. I don't think there's anything 'dodgy' about it other than getting GFWL games to work without GFWL but not sure what other games it supports. I had only tried it with Bulletstorm and it worked a treat.

Thread made me think MS had "revamped" GFWL, you almost had me there

Best thing that EVER came out of GFW(L) is that the 360 controller became a standard for PC gamers and make a default that now (almost) all pc games map to.

The rest of the entire service has had 0 impact and 0 improvement to pc gaming.

Are Red Faction: Guerilla and Dead Rising 2 games that will die with a GFWL shutdown like Bulletstorm or will they be OK for offline play?

Just tried on my origin version (sorry guys, steam will wait), no GFWL sign up, the game starts with no problems.

I also tried on my steam Dirt2 version, the game see previous saves are corrupted, create a new one, and the game does not use GFWL.

If there was one good thing about GFWL it was that it helped make the 360 controller standard on PC. So much better than the old 1,2,3,4 button layout and Xinput is just so niceto use.

the xliveless dll seems a cure for most problems, it is still a work in progress. Like any PC-thing, it will be good at the end.

I remember when Games for Windows Live first came; and I was perhaps, one of the first people to experience it as I quickly had bought Halo 2 "for Windows" at the time, and installed it on a Windows Vista computer. Needless to say, the game actually didn't work, and suffered from multiple issues. Only a few years later, under Windows 7 I was able to play it, but my interest in playing Halo 2 had already died off.

And I am thankful I gave up on Windows completely. No computer, nor game I play nowadays is tainted.

GFWL is single-handedly responsible for me not playing ANY Dawn Of War multiplayer. Not a single second. And not for a lack of trying. So it can fucking get fucked.

I'm interested in some of the games listed in the OP, I take it I won't be able to play them after GFWL shuts down?

Does Happy Wars on Steam use a new type of GFWL?

Its a full SteamWorks game but it forces you to log in to a Microsoft Account through some outlook portal. You play the game though your XBL Gamertag but still earn Steam Achievements. I'm not sure if it cross-platforms with Xbox 360 users.

Out of all of the games i have that used GFWL (Flat Out: UC, RE 5, SF IV, SFXTEKKEN, DIRT 2-3, DARK SOULS, RED FACTION GUERILLA, 007; QOS) i'm more annoyed at the Australian made game - AFL LIVE, a game based on our popular football code that was released in 2012. The developers went through GFWL because Steam were not interested in hosting it on their platform :-/. It's a fun game, sure it didn't have the budget of a Fifa or NBA 2K game but it was a fair representation of the real sport.

Do people actually use GFWL and actually like it?

Out of all of the games i had, i only had an issue with F1 2010 - even though i would download the game update from GFWL, it still wouldn't work properly - meaning i'd lose my game save progress on a regular basis.

I currently have 2 games that use GFWL;

- Super SF 4 AE - Since its coming free to Gold this month I will probably just switch over to xbox for this game ... need to get a fightpad as my ps3/PC fightpad wont work on my xbox. In general, GFWL generally sucked and it always signed me out so I had to sign back in ... Game looks great though on PC so I may double dip

- Halo 2 - I never played this game and I just picked it up for PC. I really hope something happens with this because I dont think Ill get around to playing it before July. Anyone heard anything about this one?

SSF4 AE got a Steamworks patch this weekend.

What lead to GFWL being abandoned? I mean the concept of unifying XBL on to PC seems like a good idea. Was it just half assed from the start so it was bound to fail?

I tried Gears of Wars with xliveless, works great.

If yu want me to try a specific game (one I own) I can try.

WTF is going on with the Steam version of AE? I can't find any players in ranked or endless..

They introduced some bugs with the steamworks transition, bad netcode and online play restricted to players within the same region, among others. Might be that players are avoiding the online modes until these get fixed.

I tested Test Drive Ferrari.

The game is very much like Bulletstorm, it saves online, and you had to sign it all the time.

Now, using xliveless, last version, it works offline. No GFWL sign in, no freeze, etc

The only game left unpatched that I care about is Red Faction: Guerrilla.

sadly Nordic Games seems like they don't care

Now you see why I hate Uplay with a passion. It's funny as many PC gamers actually just rent Ubisoft games on console to get away from Uplay.

I have huge issues with Origins and Uplay. I don't buy EA games at all on PC anymore to avoid Origin. Ubi awful PC ports will lead me to do the same for Uplay. I'll only put Uplay above GFWL just because I don't lose my saves my Uplay.

I don't have problem with non Steam as I like Blizzard Battle.net client and support. but Uplay, Origin and GFWL are abominations.

You won't be able to connect as GFWL is required for the online infrastructure.

The good news for all these publishers is Steam provides a P2P service for free. They are able to port the system over and forget about support costs over the years.

There are Street Fighter players currently pouring one out for GFWL because of how apparently poor SSIV is playing now that it's on steamworks.

I wouldn't know since my laptop won't even boot the game.
This is something i wasn't expecting at all to happen, as much as i liked GFWL (again, i had no issues with it) i was expecting the Steamworks version to be better - but it isn't and as such I've switched back to the GFWL version until its fixed.
