GFWL Thread

The stay of execution has been quietly pushed back however.

I'd wait for Monday to come and go before saying that the date has been pushed back, and even then I'd still leave some wiggle room until July 1st has actually passed (not that MS would announce a service shutdown the day before it's due to happen, but absolute certainty n'all).

I'll be a vocal minority and say that I actually liked the fact they tried to tie your GfW profile into your X-box profile/cross-platform achievements and gameplay in certain titles.

Was nice, despite the "issues" with keyboard-mouse vs controller and all that. Made being able to message other people that were playing on 360 not a hassle.

Fallout 3 is not a problem. GfWL was purely optional in case you want achievements.
I still have an unused key from my retail version that I never bothered to activate. And I played it at release, before there were any mods to disable GfWL. You could just close the GfWL pop-up and ignore it.

I tried a couple weeks back and it doesn't work.

You probably just had a general GFWL issue, they are quite prevalent even when the service is available.

Have you downloaded the updated client from Microsoft's website? Have you logged into xbox.com and accepted any TOS changes?

With that said, has anyone tried cracking the Bulletstorm exe?

With both Bandai and Capcom using the words 'for the foreseeable future,' I am willing to bet that Microsoft sent word with that exact wording on the shutdown date.

Yeah, I'd much rather have it not work forever on GFWL instead than have it basically work now and completely work after the first patch in a week on Steam.
Hoping it doesn't suck ass like the AE conversion does not mean I don't want other games to come to steamworks

Also technically a few cracks and your game will work forever(just not online of course), just saying though :P

Do people actually use GFWL and actually like it?

I like it as it allows me to get achievements that I wouldn't get otherwise as I don't pay for gold on the 360. That and I can actually play the online multiplayer rather than being locked out as I am on the 360.

I agree that it's likely the date has been pushed back; I'm just saying that, for the sake of accuracy, you shouldn't post things as fact when there's no confirmation. You had the same habit during the early days of your GFWL/SecuROM removal theories for Bio2 and Arkham Asylum/City. ;) "For the foreseeable future" is a fairly vague phrase -- it could mean that Microsoft has decided to keep GFWL alive indefinitely or it could just mean that the July 1st date is being reconsidered.

It'll be fixed in a week.

Online is basically what we're talking about.

I cut GFWL just enough slack to properly hang itself.

Fox only.

Final destination.

Long may it die. Although before that, preferably after excusing itself from every game within the OP. I'm still itching to start Dark Souls on PC, it's the only thing putting me off.

I can't wait until Dark Souls drops GFWL. Hopefully I'll find more people online after that happens.

I'd thought that Scamco would jump straight to Dark Souls after popping its patching cherry with Ace Combat, but apparently not. It's looking likely that GFWL's death has been postponed so I wonder if Scamco's just said to itself, "Well, now we can deal with Dark Souls later" instead of being proactive about it like Sega with the DoW2 games.

If more games transfer from GFWL to steamworks I hope it doesn't suck ass like the AE gfwl to steamworks conversion right now.

AE's transition is pretty quicky since Capcom is using a third party, aren't they? That third party had to rip out all the GfWL code and then put in Steamworks in under like... a month, yeah?

I'd give them a month and then come back before proclaiming the transition off GfWL is busted completely with that example, because I feel the same thing is gonna happen to Dark Souls if it transitions since the ENTIRE game was built for peer-to-peer/360 P2P code instead of Dark Souls 2/Demon Souls' dedicated servers netcode.

Such a shame. I went back to DS1 after finishing NG+ of DSII and remembered how much better it is than its sequel.

Anyone confirm if Bulletstorm works with a cracked exe? I don't actually own the game, but I've heard the GFWL authentication is particularly dirty.

First post in the thread I made sure to highlight that it was merely a theory rather than fact. Just got lazy there with the explanation.

I'm aware of that. I'm referring to your choice of phrasing in the post I quoted earlier.

Edit:
Anyone confirm if Bulletstorm works with a cracked exe? I don't actually own the game, but I've heard the GFWL authentication is particularly dirty.

I was going to check but Steam overwrote my pre-existing installation, so I have to download all 6GB again. Someone with a faster connection than I can weigh in.

Possibly could happen in Europe where consumers have rights, but I now it won't happen in America.

When you are purchasing a digital game the TOS directly references that you are essentially purchasing a licence to play the game rather than actual property. The rights clearly fall on Microsoft's side in any legal action.

Holy shit, what a dick-ish stance they got there with the US law. No wonder PC enthusiast hate GFWL and Uplay with passion.

I'm pretty sure that the only GFWL games that I haven't played yet (and aren't listed by Grief as expected to be steamified) are all from Capcom, I've been pushing over the last few months to play what gfwl games I could, but I'm really hoping they make the change. It still bums me out for Bulletstorm though, the game is fantastic and their implementation is worse than most. What a shame.

It should since the crack is basically forcing the offline profile and blocking every connection to the gfwl servers.

I'm gonna miss FUEL. I liked that game despised the overall hate for it. I just hope somebodt out there will patch it to remove GFWL. And my copy of Halo 2 is not gonna work anymore :(

Now you see why I hate Uplay with a passion. It's funny as many PC gamers actually just rent Ubisoft games on console to get away from Uplay.

Hopefully, I'll probably pick it up next Steam sale. I've always wanted to play the game as I am a huge fan of shooters, but was waiting to reward Epic with a sale after they removed GFWL.

Not really sure, where would I accept the tos? It would ask me to log into gfwl, I do than it says to press enter I do than it just asks me to sign in again.

Man, this whole GFWL shutdown has been a giant mess. Though I guess it's a good test to see which publishers give a fuck about consumer satisfaction and who's just interested in taking money and running.

Uplay has given me more grief than GFWL, but to be fair the only GFWL games I've played are Bulletstorm (the whole thing), Fable 3 (for a few hours or so) and Fallout 3 (for about 90 minutes).

I thought Blazblue was patched out?

Pretty sure it's the only reason I purchased it on Steam...

The version of BlazBlue that's on Steam is the GFWL-free (and consequently comparatively limited) WinStore version.

No kidding. How many hours have you lost with corrupted saves?

In a lot of ways Uplay makes the same exact mistakes that GFWL did, and it's arguable which one is actually worse.

I kind of liked GFWL for the cheevos and being able to message my friends on 360 while I played on PC.

Its too bad the whole thing was kind of half baked though.

Oh well...

Around 100. The first save file issue I had set me back 96 hours in Black Flag and the second or third time it happened I hadn't backed up my saves for a few hours, so I lost that bit of progress, too. But at least it wasn't another 96. ;) I also lost my Liberation HD progress following a Windows reinstall, but this wasn't Uplay's fault -- GSM backed up my config file but not the actual saves.

I was going to come in and sadly inform you that they'd delisted it rather than fix the GFWL issue, but... apparently they put it back up just today, without explanation?

This also leads me to believe that GFWL's sunset date has been pushed back -- since GFWL will still be alive come the Summer Sale, EA figured it could use the extra revenue. ;)

I would love it if they could come to an agreement on funding the GFWL removal. Just make it DRM free if EA has a problem with Steamworks.

Then everyone is happy.

Assuredly the sales numbers of Bulletstorm on Origin are negligible though.

How is Halo 2 for PC? Does it required GFWL still?

It requires GFWL and it's actually not a very good port.

They originally mentioned ahuttding down the servers last year, pushed it back, then told us we would have more information in early 2014... It is June.

I have a legally purchased copy of GTAIV that I won't be able to play without cracking thanks to GFWL shutting down soon. Which means I have to find workaround methods for multiplayer, if I ever plan on going down that route.

Why is it that game companies like to make it as difficult as possible to play the games that people have paid for? Meanwhile, the pirates that companies like MS were trying to crack down on have fully working, DRM-free versions of any game, while paying customers have to deal with shit like this.

This is the kind of stuff that creates piracy...

Still very puzzling why MS is killing off GFWL. How can a company just up and abandon a platform they basically built? It makes no sense. Yes it was terrible in a lot of ways but it could have been fixed with some effort.

Same argument could be applied to the Watch Dogs release.

Not only were the pirates playing the game a few days early, but they were also able to play while hundreds of thousands on PC were watching Uplay errors.

Shit, need to finish Darks Souls, but Mario Kart...

OT: thanks for all the amazing functionality GfWL, now die in a fire

I had a copy of bulletstorm on my old origin account and sadly that account is dead, so I don't think I'll ever get to play it again because I really didn't expect them to delist it.

As great as digital can be, I'm not parting with my physical stuff anytime soon; since shit like this is starting to happen.

Microsoft has a very serious problem with getting the left hand to agree with the right. Any improvements to its attitudes towards PC gaming are seen as threats to the Xbox business.

I'm starting to feel very hesitant about Uplay. I have some games there and the service always seemed rather flaky to me. I doubt Ubi cares more than MS ever did. :(

It'll be pretty sad if GTA IV and EFLC stop working in regards to MP. I've probably put about 500 hours in to Free Mode with mates.
