A lot of people seem to have a really inflated sense of the original movie. Like it blew their mind when they were 15 and then they just stuck to that assessment and never reevaluated later.

Maybe the people asking why Scar Jo isn't naked fit that description, Its my favorite anime movie no question.

Rewatch it atleast once a year, holds up

I saw the movie rather late. Like only a year or two ago I think.

It wasn't my all time favorite thing but it has a lot of things going for it that make it very unique to this day.

Man Machine Interface isn't the original manga, and shouldn't be considered as such. She dresses pretty appropriately in most of the original manga, and doesn't even wear 100% transparent camouflage for fanservi... sorry, technical and deep philosophical reasons.

Ehhh, the comment I was replying to didn't even say 'original' and I was mostly replying to the idea that Shriow isn't a huge pervert. Which is kind of silly IMO considering his output.

I wasn't even saying he wasn't a perve. Hell I love his perve stuff. But there was never any Motoko is skin tight body suits or thong whatevers when she was on the job.

Weta Workshop did the weapons, costumes, and props for the film, which Paramount showed off at the recent GITS media event:

I should really use this conversation as an excuse to re-read all of the manga. It's probably MMI coloring my memory but I could have sworn she was wearing stuff similar (but not quite as ridiculous) to her SAC get-up in certain parts.

I remember he has her wear just a thong and a shirt for one story where she's casually on-duty. I think that's the most he's had her wear less clothes, with the exception of the VR orgy scene. During combat she wears body armor.

I should actually watch the whole show from the start instead of the handful of episodes I've seen when I was younger.

This movie looks pretty cool.

okay, so, why is this video unlisted?
Afraid of another Ghostbusters?

Anyway, it's weird that they picked Johanssen and then decided to make the whole thing look exactly like the anime adaptation. She looks so out of place in that setting that I have to ask why they didn't just hire an Asian lady who wouldn't. Yeah I know, bewbs. But aside from that.

But was the original Major so extremely Asian looking in the first place? I think Scarlett fits nicely with how the first movie looked.

They weren't going to fund a big budget sci fi film without a well known actress in the lead. Margot Robbie was originally offered the lead and passed, then Scarlett Johansson was offered the part along with 10 million dollars and she accepted.

The unfortunate reality is it would defeat the purpose to license an anime property to be adapted for the west and cast them as an Asian, unless they were a box office star here.

Anime characters generally don't look asian.

I'm very confused seeing how the setting looks pretty asian, geisha robots and Kitano shooting a dude in the head etc etc. but we got white people as leads?

Idunno I'd kinda be less off put if it was just redone in America at that point.

I have to say, most of the weapon props look like utter ass compared to Shirow's designs. Weta really dropped the ball there.

WETA is working on this? What? The art direction and set design look great but the rest of the production design doesn't feel up to their usual standards. Their prop work tends to be really grounded but cool.

Shocking, isn't?

The geishas and the world itself look very WETA, but some things are really off and don't gel at all with their sci-fi flair, let alone the quality you'd expect from them.

Ok, now that's a bigger issue that arises when you cast white people in leads of ethnic stories. You get all the cool and diverse culture and aesthetics along with ethnic characters except only in the background or as support for the White main characters.

As far as anime adaptations are concerned, I don't know what can be done about it because Japanese creators and companies co sign it, and the Japanese people don't mind it at all and merely look at it as a Hollywood adaptation of a Japanese property.

So the only people really affected by this are Asian American/Western population and actors who have a tough time as it is getting work, so i completely understand why they are getting territorial about Anime. Although I have no idea about the politics involved with casting a non Japanese Asian American or Western actor in a Japanese property made by Americans and whether Japanese creators, companies, and the people take offense to it. I say this because Japanese Americans only make up 0.2 percent of the population, and 0.4 percent of people with partial Japanese ancestry so it's safe to assume that it's other Asian Americans who stand to benefit more with better Asian casting in these properties.

I'm not really speaking from a "pc" point of view. I'm just saying it looks odd seeing white people in this setting.

I guess I'm used to it, I see white people in every setting of every part of history in TV and Films. LOL A fictional Cyberpunk setting with Japanese cultural overtones, aesthetics, and people isn't going to break my suspension of disbelief because a White person is in the lead.

Although it would've been awesome if they cast an Asian American instead.

Wouldn't call it fixed, that music really gels well with Oshii's slow burning style, this movie looks much more traditionally action sci fi, but it's hard to watch anything GitS without the Kawai music, even the TV show lost a lot, despite Yoko Kanno doing a great job (plagiarism and all, yeah, yeah) but the plot line itself as well as the atmosphere, weren't as serious, so it didn't feel as jarring.

It'd be like having Akira without the Geinoh Yamashirogumi score... just no.

it ruined the entire trailer for me though, that music didnt add anything to pacing etc.
Are you referring to enjoy the silence?
Don't know, that kinda made the trailer for me
It's been stuck in my head all day and was very well put together and edit, it's a fantastic trailer and I think that's due to the music and editing.
Soon as it started I had chills and knew instantly what it was.

Is it that questionable when the original manga had a super graphic lesbian threesome for no discernible reason?

Yes.

Despite the Manga being the original source material (and the Playstation Opening was clearly based on that version of the character) I don't have to favour that particular interpretation of the character over, say, the 1995 movie. Just because it's faithful doesn't mean I have to like it.

Although my actual point (which was apparently very poorly made) was that this movie looks like a very tasteful depiction of the character. All the subsequent adaptation of Gits, such as Stand Alone Complex and Arise have featured differing amounts of Kusanagai fanservice to varying levels of distraction.

exactly, it didnt sit well with me at all. Sure its just a trailer, but it could have been so much more if they used the original soundtrack from Kawai. That shit is Gits !

Clint mansell is great and the work he did on the fountain is top notch, hopefully he respects Kawais work and copy his work into this film but also add something of his own in certain parts.

Seems like the production quality is good but something bothers me about science fiction when 20 years can pass and it's just recycled with seemingly even less to say. It could even be robocop from 30 years ago with how the major is presented in the trailer. Cyberpunk is always style over substance though it's mandatory.
