Ghost In The Shell (2017) Trailer

Looks surprisingly great.

Except the decloaking scene as everyone has pointed out but that looks like the token "it looks okay in 3D but terrible in 2D scene" like the truck exploding in the pass in Mad Max Fury Road.

That really doesn't look very good. Just like a standard action film without any of the philosophical parts. Just a trailer though so I'll reserve judgement.

I don't really get that complain. She's a human brain inside a robot body, isn't she?
I think that level of emotion was often shown for her in SAC.

In SAC it made sense, but they seem to be going for the aesthetic and taking a lot of inspiration from the 95 movie, where it doesn't make much sense.

SAC focused more on the societal effects of cyberization, which worked well as it had lots of episodes to tackle it from lots of different angles and characters, but the movie was very much about the Major's attempts and trying to understand and deal with her increasing disassociation with her humanity. So everything from her being stoic, monotone voice and unchanging expression, to her not really subscribing to conventional norms for modesty and decency (running around in skin tight skin colored suits) were part of it

At least it has that going for it. Standalone Complex was a mistake, nothing but trash.

Standalone Complex was amazing, but it was closer to the manga as to the movie. Even the Tachikomas were great in Standalone Complex, very much like in the manga.

Wow.

The series is so much better than the movie. Seriously. Both seasons. I didn't think there are GitS fans that hate the SAC :o

I know opinions and all but...

Heh, I guess this really is going to be a Hollywood take on GitS:SAC more than anything else. Could be a fun blockbuster. Might be better than Arise. Lol.

GitS hasn't been about actual philosophy for decades now. The most popular iteration of it in modern media is SAC which this draws heavily from. Especially 2nd GIG. Have you seen GitS Arise? It's basically an attempt to reboot GitS in the vein of Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

There are quite a few people who think that Oshii's films are the only legitimately good GitS. Not a majority, but definitely some. It makes sense, since Oshii and SAC take different approaches. These people generally think that SAC is an empty narrative without any of the atmosphere or thoughtfulness of the films.

Aeon Flux is a guilty pleasure of mine. I know absolutely nothing about Ghost in the Shell (should I read the manga?), but you definitely have me interested.

Watch the Standalone Complex, it is a great introduction to the world and the philosophy of Ghost in the Shell.

Looks great visually, obviously. I like that they've taken shots straight out of the anime. Johansson seemed a little too human in that "maybe next time design me better" line.

Is this a mix of different storylines? I noticed stuff that was pretty obvious from the main film but some other stuff I didn't recognise.

Kinda wish they'd used the main theme but that cover ain't bad.

I think it is like all the other properties with them existing in their own universes pretty much (manga, movies, SAC, the new anime) with some heavy handed borrowing of iconic scenes from the other versions for that fanboy nostalgia feel.

And to me this looks okish based on the trailer (My favorite GITS thing is Innocence so maybe I'm just weird)

Production design and cinematography look very nice... Doesn't really scream GitS though.

I'll watch it, but I have low expectations.

I loooove Oshii's Ghost on the Sheel, but Standalone Complex builds the world better and also explaining the idea of cyberization and Artificial Intelligence.

And to be honest, Ghost in the Shell was not Oshii's best adaption of an anime or manga. The Patlabor movies are even better.

I kinda liked SAC but I hated the Major in it. I just found her to be uninteresting and just kind of an all around bad ass in a world where the flawed characters were way more interesting. Season 2 literally devotes an entire episode to showing how much better she is than one of her squadmates.

Doesn't help that I still do not understand what the fuck was going at the end of Season 1.
Why are they resisting the black ops guys with lethal force only to get put in prison and released? Did they not understand that was what was going to happen? How the fuck did they get away killing that many men? Am I supposed to be rooting for anyone here when repeatedly the black ops guys try to arrest them only to get murdered?

Well, you know, at leat they seem to be trying. Not sure they are taking the scenes from the movies and the storyline partially from 2nd Gig.

There's still something off with Scarlet's performance. She's practically not hitting any notes with Major. The real Major hacked her and implanted fake memories. That's the only explanation!

The '95 movie is a masterpiece but c'mon the TV series is great as well. They focus on different things while still exploring the same themes.

I liked how it looks. But it seems they are going to use the old amnesiac hero trope.

I read the original manga and watched the first two movies.
The main theme was "what it means to be human" and it haunted the major. It was "what am i" instead of "who was i"

Turns out she is the bad guy's daughter who became bad because what they did to her or some shit.

Anyway, i'm mildly interested.

Loved both the 'something-for-the-male-viewers' eye candy shots. Not sure about the 'searching for my past' plot that it's hinting at.

Cautiously optimistic.

I have to say the suit looks doesn't look so bad in this shot

I guess there's some cgi enhancement to make it look so tight

I don't think it's the suit so much it's the green screen background and the fact that the lighting on the suit doesn't seem to match it. I think the suit looks as good as we could get for the skinsuit she was wearing in the scene in the movie

Couple of things:
  • General aesthetic is really nice
  • They got Batou's eyes right
  • Car above looks awesome
  • Anyone arguing that the original 1995 film isn't the definitive GitS experience is lying

The Aeon Flux comparisons are pretty apt. Looks nice, but has some funky CGI going on.

Still loses points for its whitewashing, and I doubt it's going to break any new ground or get any deeper than your average blockbuster.

Surprisingly fantastic trailer considering. Song choice on point.

Still majorly pissed about the whitewashing - GitS is an inherently Japanese tale, which makes this leave a bad taste in the mouth. Would have been way more interested in a domestic adaptation directed by someone like Shinya Tsukamoto.

Well technically she's a soul inside a cyber brain inside a robot body, thus the ghost in the shell.

I also admit that seeing the Major grapple with self doubt is a bit weird. She's always felt like the most pragmatic person.
