Ghost In The Shell (2017) Trailer

Huh. I'll admit it has been a while since I re-read the manga, but I don't remember it the same way you do. Especially vol. 2

I remember lots of naked floating in cyberspace motoko, panty shots galore in every fight scene or whenever really, and lesbian threesomes.

Man Machine Interface isn't the original manga, and shouldn't be considered as such. She dresses pretty appropriately in most of the original manga, and doesn't even wear 100% transparent camouflage for fanservi... sorry, technical and deep philosophical reasons.

?
It's just volume 2 of the original comic.

It's a sequel that took six years to finish its serialized run, and another four before it received its final tankobon version. The final tank wasn't released until 2001. It can't be considered the original when even its serialized run ended two years after the first film was released. Moreover, it's pretty clear that 80's Shirow had quite different ideas and priorities to 90's and later Shirow.

In terms of story and world building, SAC is better.
For atmosphere, visuals and Major's characterization, Original.

Best to watch both.

Her characterization is definitely not better in the film. There's no way it can compare to 50+ episodes, which also have dramatically better characterization for essentially every other character.

Nope, looks terrible. Closed the window when I saw this.

The eyes look derpy, the way the shadows fall in this shot makes it even worse.

How exactly is it supposed to look different in real life? It's basically a 1:1 adaptation of the anime/manga design. Yeah, real life has shadows.

Yeah I watched one episode of SAC yesterday.

And I was like...what a stupid looking character.

Her thong (or whatever that is) in season 1 is pretty atrocious, I agree. I think her standard 2nd Gig outfit is the best she's ever had though. I think that the show is compelling enough where you more or less start to ignore how dumb her initial outfit looks though.

Unless you're being sarcastic about Batou or something...

I think the trailer is 99% awesome, and then does what it can to sabotage itself with the last 10 seconds. Still, consider me highly interested.

As a fan of the 1995 movie I doubt this one is going to be anything like that in the ways that matter, even if it uses some of the same visual imagery. Not sure I'd want it to be like the 1995 movie, because that one is good enough as it is, but if this is something different I don't know why I should care.

I'm actually fine with the visuals. Also, they don't seem be sourcing only from Oshii's film, so if the Major doesn't end up being like his interpretation I'm also fine with it.
My only concern is that from the few lines showed, they seem to be reducing the story to some "easy to digest" Robocop analogue.

No other part of the franchise is like the 95 movie really.

My biggest fear, based on the shots we've seen and the description of the plot being based on SAC S2, is that it won't be very unique or interesting for someone already familar with GITS, but it'll look awfully purdy.

Its been a few years since I last saw the movies and anime, never read the manga. Are they basing it off the first movie entirely? From what little i remember it seems shot for shot the first movie, but the plot seems different?

Off topic - Should I read the manga?

Looks surprisingly good. The original is one of those movies where I don't need a live action remake because the animation is so fucking incredible, but it will be cool to see the set pieces (mainly the city) done in 'real life'.

I still remember the first time I saw GOTS, I wanna say it was around 2000 and I'm pretty sure I watched a friend's DVD of it, knew nothing about it going in. Was completely blown away and to this day will re-watch it occasionally just for the animation/setting.

That was the DVD cover I remember.

No reason not to.

I'm imagining the DP coming on the set, seeing what the production-designers have done, and saying "Fuck it, no time for extravagant blocking or dark lighting. I'm just gonna make sure everything is visible and shoot in 16:9 so that nothing is out of the frame."

I'm actually getting really interested in the movie. The visuals and the blocking looks great. The scene with the walking geisha robot is great. Reminds me of Ex Machina in how slow and all encompassing it all looks.

Also, trailer music is great, have been listening to it non-stop since the trailer came out.

I think I might think of the movie the same I did with Oblivion. Its script was simple and inoffensive, just down to brass tacks, but which was so much more fitting because it visually is so breathtaking, rich and full of texture.

Clint Mansell to Score ‘Ghost in the Shell’

oooooooooooooooooooooooooo

What?

So they are not using Kenji Kawai original music score from the Anime? That needs to be in the film or I will get pissed.

My guess is that the intro will be scored by Kawai since that's so iconic and the music they played at the event was new. Mansell will probably do the rest. I'm fine with that.

Enjoy The Silence? At least it's not Radioactive.

Also eh, another origin story? Guess they hope to turn it into a whole series.

That looked fantastic. It also looks really expensive. As much as it would be a benefit to have a Japanese actor play major, I can tell that ScarJo is a business decision. The producers need to secure their huge investment in what is a pretty risky project.

The original song needs to be in it and i hope to god it is. why wouldnt they.

The film looks great, I cant wait.

Same. Visually, looks pretty nice. Seems like they are greatly reducing the thematic elements that made the original film so great to begin with in exchange for easy to digest run-of-the-mill sci fi storyline. Very meh to that.

But part of me hopes they are just doing that for the trailer purposes to not dissuade general audiences. We'll see.

They showed the 'full' intro and it's some new variant of the original. For example the original in the '95 version didn't have the drums building up to a climax. So either Kawai scored that track for the new film or Mansell was able to copy Kawai's work almost exactly.

It's a sequel that took six years to finish its serialized run
(well, most of the 1991-1997 serialization you're referring to there actually became volume 1.5 / Human Error Processer... everything but the Dual Device segment from 1997, which was then expanded into volume 2 / ManMachine Interface three/four years later)

and another four before it received its final tankobon version. The final tank wasn't released until 2001. It can't be considered the original when even its serialized run ended two years after the first film was released.
By that same logic, volumes 5 and 6 of Akira aren't "the original"...

it's pretty clear that 80's Shirow had quite different ideas and priorities to 90's and later Shirow.
Well, there you go. You really didn't need to come up with some weird imaginary rules to try and argue that volume 2 isn't the original comic; just say that you didn't like the evolution of the author / series. ^^;

My guess is he won't do anything for it all.

That looked much better than I was expecting. I was wondering what they would do about the "body suit". I hope we still get that awesome scene with the tank near the end.
