Holy...

What's going on around GAF lately?

http://everydayfeminism.com/2015/07/what-privilege-really-means/

3. Having Privilege Doesn’t Mean You Haven’t Experienced Oppression in Other Ways

7. Having Privilege Doesn’t Mean You Didn’t Work Hard or You Should Feel Bad About Your Good Fortune

13. Pointing Out Privilege Doesn’t Mean Hating On the People Who Have It

If you have time, I recommend you read what this article explains privilege to be, because that's what I mean when I say it. If you think cancer means you can't possible have privilege from being a white man... I don't think you fully understand it.

It's fucking terrible to see people in this very forum minimizing attitudes like that, and instead clowning around and calling James sexist.

How about we not minimize any of it?

It would be grand to look at this entire situation and aptly acknowledge everything for what it is.

James Rolfe does not deserve the ire thrown in his direction. He made a video, it had his opinion. There has been much worse in the past.

The production crew of Ghostbusters deserve the outlandish hate thrown in their direction. They made a movie. Don't like it, don't see it. This two year parade of hate is nonsense.

Don't try to minimize poor actions on "your side". Good people perform poor actions all the time.

TB is completely right. Whilst some sexism is obviously a part, the overwhelming majority of people who disliked that trailer likely did it because they disliked the trailer. ie. they think the film looks bad.

The numbers don't add up and they've never added up. We have metrics for this. People trying to downplay stuff like this is the impetus for the rest.

I think gaf, mainly the off topic stuff, has not had the best history when it comes to politics. Sadly a movie trailer has turned into politics for what ever reason.

Also wow even Dane Cook has an opinion on James. This is some kind of record for collective thought

Has the whole collage from the AVGN thread been posted?

Then I'll just say I highly disagree and leave it at that.

Holy shit, late night lurking and didn't really see this.

People with tons of influence, who probably never have watched anything @ cinemassacre/ know what the channel is, are literally attacking James because he decides not to review a movie.

I didn't know it was this intense.

Say what you want about Rolfe but he doesn't deserve this.

Wait an angry mob is doing this towards james because he doesn't want to see it? Why are people so pathetic?

strike out the "may be" there. and I agree.

Oh, I didn't know if it was a sure thing or not because I heard it was looking good earlier this year, but everything prior to that sounded extremely bad.

This is a semantics argument then. There aren't many scenarios where it's better to have terminal cancer in your 30s than be a minority, at least in first world countries.

Why is half that collage just "I want to see the film?" Shouldn't it just focus on the maligning of Rolfe?

It was apparently from the Cinemassacre subreddit, so ask those guys, lol.

And it's something TB has done time and again. We can absolutely debate if sexism is the main factor here or if its a fandom refusing to accept that a new movie with the name isn't aimed at them. But I think it's absurd to knock someone for daring to mention *both* when talking about the trailer, and accusing them of only mentioning it to shamelessly generate controversy and views. I think it's absurd to tar James with the brush of being sexist when he's clearly just acting like an entitled Ghostbusters fan.

But to suggest as TB does that sexism has nothing to do with why Ghostbusters is more controversial than the Point Break remake? It's demonstrably false.

I mean seriously.

At what point in the life of a film editor, at multiple well respected publications, do you go "more like cinemASSacre, amirite?"

Like despite being completely oblivious to something before, you're just going to go full on in hate.

The amount of hate and people dedicating huge portion of their times doing this type of stuff is sad, considering how seemingly little effort was put into these trailers.

I don't think you get it.

Dude has terminal cancer. You cannot get worse than that. I'd take on absolutely any role or race in society rather than be in his shoes.

Exactly. Many of those posts having nothing directly to do with Rolfe and are just showing general support for the film and/or opposition to the orchestrated downvoting of the film.

I said it before and I'll say it again: the personal insults at Rolfe are lame and unneeded. But I can only hope some of those who are quick to point out the harassment he's gotten were also this active at all the "Leslie Jones is a silverback gorilla" comments and other personal insults the cast has received from jump on this.

Totalbiscuit has the worst reactions to things for a smart person.

The Screen Junkies video was one of the most balanced things I've seen on the subject. You have to have buried your head in the sand pretty deeply to have somehow missed criticisms of the Ghostbusters remake that are clearly sexist.

Like Donald Trump's take on the matter.

THEY'RE REMAKING GHOSTBUSTERS WITH ONLY WOMEN. WHAT'S GOING ON?

Clearly the voice of someone who would feel exactly the same way if the movie had men playing the team.

To argue that sexism plays no part in making the trailer the most hated trailer, when it's clearly getting some hate for casting women as the leads, it's transparent nonsense.

Again, Total Biscuit doesn't want to have to stop to check if he's being sexist, or to ever have to hear about sexism. It might make him feel bad or stop him enjoying something he's into. Because he's a privileged white guy who can't get his head around the fact that life gave him more oppurtunities since he mistakenly thinks that such a thing invalidates everything he's ever achieved for himself.

As he's dying of cancer

Dude Tb has terminal cancer show some respect you selfish person sjees.

This is a semantics argument then. There aren't many scenarios where it's better to have a very serious form of cancer with a 100% mortality rate in your 30s than be a minority, at least in first world countries.

No group seems to have the privilege of being immune to cancer. I am not happy that TB has cancer, but that's not going to stop me calling him out when he's spouting stuff that I see as utter nonsense. I did it before I knew he had cancer. I'll still do it now. I hope his cancer goes into remission and I hope he stops lending credibility to groups like gamergate and I hope he stops trying to prevent discussion of the real sexism that has surrounded the Ghostbusters remake.

When you're a guy it's way easier to ignore sexism than when you're a woman. That's priviledge. Even if you have cancer. Getting upset at someone for talking about real sexism that's completely on topic for their discussion? That's just shitty behavior.

Shitty behavior doesn't give you cancer. Nor does it protect you from cancer.

So cancer doesn't make you immune to having your shitty behavior criticized.

Dude Tb has terminal cancer show some respect you selfish person sjees.

Not that I entirely agree with plagiarize on this, but dying of terminal cancer doesn't mean your arguments can't be criticized. Nor does it mean you can't occupy a space in society that historically yields you more privilege than other people when it comes to certain issues. Obviously his personal circumstances are something no one would wish to have though.

The thing is though that IN REAL LIFE, it's all just personal circumstances.

This thread has gone from movie opinions to shitting on a man with cancer. I'm out, yet highly looking forward to the review thread of the movie for some odd reason.

Why do i have this pressing feeling that this stupid ideological crap is for many "morally righteous" people one reason why they only jump on James or generally on the "evil white dudes"lol
I mean the trailer was bad, the studio used this trailer to represent their movie soo what gives?
Is it really a new concept that people dont watch movies if they didnt like the trailer or if it shits on something you like(indy crystal skull, episode one etc)?
Especial for movies you already dont care that much? "BU bU all women cast?"
So? fucking? what?

The thing is though that IN REAL LIFE, it's all just personal circumstances.

So a billionaire with an untreatable terminal illness has no more privilege or benefits in society than a miser in good health?

I don't think plagiarize is arguing that he'd rather be in TB's shoes than be a female or a minority or anything else. I think what he is arguing - quite fairly - is that TB isn't exempt from having his opinion on the matter criticized. He's in a scenario no one would wish for, but that doesn't invalidate every aspect of the rung he occupies in society. You can't drown out any and all dissent by just saying "He has cancer, man!"
