If we're going to invoke math, the average ep is like 21 minutes, and that includes the guest and sometimes second interview session which isn't as scripted. We're talking 10-15mins of material per episode, four days a week, with them taking two week breaks every three months. That's not a ton of material. While GTA V is an expansive game that'll probably take 30+ hours to complete. Sure, only a small portion of that is the satire, but the Housers and other writers had to have their fingers in everything else too, and just because it's been years since the last GTA doesn't mean they've been working on it nonstop since.

You want math? Let's do some fucking math.

It's debatable as to how much of the interview segment is scripted or not, since Colbert always gets in the occasional zinger when asking the questions. But for the sake of argument, let's say there's 15 minutes of fresh written material in every episode of the Colbert Report. There are, on average (rounded, and discounting the first 32-episode season) 156 episodes in a year-long "season" of the Colbert Report. That's 2340 minutes of comedy, or 39 hours. Every year.

GTA V has been in development for "over four years". We don't know exactly how long the game is, but Rockstar has been quoted as saying that the game has over 100 hours of content. We'll also assume all of that content is scripted - meaning not just the cutscenes, but the gameplay itself. These segments have voice acting, and are all designed as set pieces - so it's a fair comparison (it isn't, but I'm just fucking around here.). Assuming all things are equal, that means in an equal period of time - the Colbert Report staff wrote over 156 hours of comedy, while the GTA V staff wrote only 100. (Even less, since the comedic beats of GTA V are only a small portion of the overall experience. Then again, Colbert's writing staff is likely bigger.). Yet Rockstar is allowed to get away with lazy comedy writing, while Colbert is expected to churn out constant gold.

What does that mean for GTA V? Absolutely nothing. I kind of just felt like running the numbers.

Side note, the staff of Colbert and Daily Show get 50+ days of vacation a year, not to mention they don't work Fridays or weekends. Sweet deal.

It's waaaaaay better than using the analogue stick as mouse movement given how shitty sticks are for aiming generally

The reason why I don't play shooters on consoles anymore is because I just can't stand stick shooting. Mouse look gives far superior shooting capabilities with higher accuracy, higher sensitivity and higher range of turning speed.

Man, that is LAX. Damn. I specifically remember that corner when I was transferring terminals.

Seeing places you've been to IRL replicated in games is weird. New Yorkers must have it the worst - I think I've been to three or four different representations of Times Square.

I think I played Max Payne 3 with free aim and the light aim assist mode. The full lock on is just boring. I'll probably play with one of those if they're available.

A memory sticks out from RDR where you're being chased while riding in the back of a horse drawn vehicle. There's a group of enemies behind you on horseback scattered around your FOV.

So I just LT RT rapidly, and Mr. Marston weaves in and out of cover, quickly dispatching these guys with no issue. It looked so ridiculous thinking back, and I was reminded of it during the rampage in the GTA V quick look.

GTA V looks like a GTA game. I mean that as a bad thing. Stuff like Infamous and Saints Row have done new things with the open world formula. The GTA pitch of driving to a location and shooting what's there isn't that interesting to me anymore.
...

Wait, in-mission checkpoints? Forget what I said, 10/10.

Jesus, W101 looks glorious.

Vinny being the steering man is definitely good stuff.

Pity they don't even try to use Unite Gun for ages while on this long-ass rail sequence

I love that when Vinny doesn't play that well on a QL then nobody holds it against him but when Brad isn't great ...

This is because Vinny is quick to acknowledge that him doing poorly is because of him not fully grasping the mechanics of the game X while Brad is quick to place his failures on game being faulty.

Difference for me is that Vinny takes it in stride and almost makes it a strength/something funny, while Brad gets mad at the game/quicklook partner/any other excuse. And I say this as a fan of Brad :D

Brad is quicker to blame the game and lose his patience with a game over either misunderstood/ignored mechanics. Vinny tends to acknowledge more often that perhaps he missed something explaining a mechanic or isn't quite as quick to fault the game if something doesn't seem right.

edit: forgot to hit reply earlier. seems others have basically said the same thing. ::shrugs::

New doesn't mean better.

I still find it so weird that Jeff loves lock-on aiming so much in shooters. Where's the fun in not being able to actually aim where you want to?
GTA is not a shooter. Last thing I want to do in GTA is fight with mediocre shooting controls to find some guy 2 buildings away sniping me. Lock-on works great for open world games, not shooters.

I'm aware that GTA is not the world's greatest shooter, but I'm more making the point that Jeff seems to use it in all games even when it can be turned off. There are quick looks of FPS games where he'll mash LT and RT and just fire at a wall and then complain about it not snapping to the enemy instantly.

It just seems a little silly to me.

man, I wasn't that interested in GTA5 anyway, but the QL really killed it for me. The flow of the game is reminding me too much of GTA4.

Seems like a pretty average schedule to me.

Actually, I was with Brad. I was freaking out just a little when Vinny kept going to the wrong rails.

That section went on and on, luckily the checkpoints were generous. I imagine having to replay from the start would have been annoying.

So anyone played it? could he have killed those ships firing missles?

Edit : hah, just noticed the annoying blue hero has a hipster chin beard like Alex.

It said "Defeat the enemies" in the corner the whole time, so I guess yes.

The little pill looking ships? Yeah.

Didn't get that far into the W101 quicklook, watch like five minutes and decided just to play my copy.

You don't get more GTA than the part where Jeff fails the mission on that gas grenade part. At least the checkpoint was relatively recent and didn't make him drive to the mission hearing the same exact conversation again.
