Gizmodo: "Most people have poor taste". 5m Galaxy note users CAN be wrong.

I don't want to analyse Gizmodo posts too closely, but why even mention America if that was the point? I think they thought they meant that in China they force you to buy a phone you don't want or something. At least, that's how I am going to imagine it was meant.

What in the.... Dude, I cannot even begin to imagine how you assumed thats what he meant. In any case, people use the phrase "Its a free country" here alot, what they mean by it isnt that this is the only free country or anything like that, they are just expressing that you can do what you like. Its a fairly common saying. That comment was just another form of that.

I believe the Note is the biggest smartphone available at the moment, so I'm always surprised when people make its size a point of contention.

There was a lot of jawing when it was first unveiled that "noone wants a device that huge". And there were a lot of people who disagreed. Fast forward 5 months, and its been extremely successful.

There's precedent.

I agree with you but we were talking about who looked strange nowadays and that's def those carrying actual cameras. They are the vast minority.

no they aren't. any tourist around the city, at museums, zoos, parks, stadiums, the streets were big events are going on, people just taking pictures in the park, at home, everywhere man. seriously cameras are a minority?

Why would I want to carry the iPad around with me on a day to day basis? Progress in this realm, as it always has been, will be moving towards a do it all device. In several years time, these things will have DSLR like camera quality, Audiophile DAC's and all the rest. That's what these devices are moving towards but every now and again companies (like Apple) like to split this up in order to create another cash cow which they'll milk as much as they can. Such as the iPad for example.

You're using your anecdotal evidence and putting it on a global argument. the iPad wasn't designed just for you, and since you don't want to carry one around day-day it doesn't mean no one else does or will.

What do you mean there will be DSLR style camera quality? There already is. If you're looking at DSLRs that came out years ago. The thing is that there will (probably) NEVER be a best in class camera-phone comparable to the then current day DSLRs, gaming devices, etc

And what do you mean companies like Apple try to create a different device to milk money? Oh like the countless, and countless of models that say HTC come out with that have slightly different variants of the previous model, and will then come out with a tablet anyway to cover all bases.

So yes, Apple is just like every other company out there. Trying to make a profit. Is this something that skips enteriely over your understanding of how countless businesses work?

Or shall I make it clearer?

And if you truly were a fan of "a separation of duties" you wouldn't even own an iPhone, which is pretty much one of the best examples of a merging of duties as you can find. I find the iPhone isn't actually that great as a "phone" per se, more as a multimedia device with phone capabilities.

That's how you see it, but that's not how I an many other people see it. I still have a seperate camera, MP3 player and Blackberry (in times of need). The only thing for me that it takes over from 100% is a handheld gaming device. Yes the iPhone has got multimedia capabilities but is still primarily a phone. Hence the name of the product

Also, definitely not going to waste my time on the challenge but people who browse these forums already know it's a pointless one. Every time it's the same crap. It doesn't need higher resolution, it's perfect! It doesn't need flash, it'll be more bulky for it and will mess with the simplistic design! MMS, who uses that anyway? Who needs a bigger screen, it's perfect as it is! Camera quality? That's what point and shoots are for. Etc etc. Same story different iPhone/iPad/iPod generation. There's always something in the way of a defence from the most passionate fans lol.

I honestly don't know why it bothers people, this. As long as people are not bashing another device then who cares? people change their ideas all the time. As Steve Jobs said, people don't know what they want until you show it to them.

Although that is a pretty bad ass personal stereo... I don't think many people actually carried around one of those things.

And you'd be wrong.

Yeah, what the hell, maybe if you're just in LA or some other smartphone hivemind place, but not the rest of the world. You can't even zoom properly with these phone cameras, and that's a must for any tourist.

Man lot of people seem threatened by the fact that this phone exists. Why the hate? No one will make you buy one I promise. If it helps just think of it as a 5.3 inch tablet with phone capabilities.

Some people just like telling other people how to live.

See:

That sums it up nicely. The Note is the Hummer of phones. Hopefully it eventually meets the same fate.

I have one and I love it

Dunno why the hate for it really

I mean yeah it's big but

EDIT: Although I will say that thanks to some weirdness by Three I don't have to use it as a phone as they gave me a Nexus for that (I don't know why just one day they sent me my 'replacement phone' which I hadn't ordered and when I phoned up to ask about it they told me to keep it)

It must a be horrible to have your delicate sensibilities offended buy people who dare to own a gadget that looks different this the one you own. How fucking dare they!

He comes across as a bit of a dick but I agree with him. The Note looks ridiculous. Even 4.3 phones are borderline too big as they are.

But hell, in five years time I'll be holding my iPad up to my ear to call someone because bigger is always better.

Article is shitty, but his point is right. The Note is too big for a phone. The mid 4 inch size is perfect.

This is what i don't understand. Who is to say what is "correct" size for a phone?

I grew up using phone receivers much larger then the Note with no problems. And now that we live in the age of smart phones. I want my phone to so a lot more things then just make calls. More screen real estate is always a good thing for browsing and multimedia. So what is the problem?

I'm hoping and praying, that the Note comes to Sprint because it looks perfect for me. But I'm nether a 12 year old girl nor do I wear chick pants (see skinny jeans).

I'm a grown ass man, so I need a grown ass phone.

I think the Note would be perfect in the high 4's. maybe 4.5" or 4.7" even.

anyway, just use a BT headset and never worry about looking stupid with it in your hand.

I don't think it's too far-fetched to say a "phone" is something you can use with only one hand.

You know how a tablet is used, you know how phones are generally used, line them up as 2 far end points of the spectrum, who can honestly deny that the Note isn't far more closer to the tablet end of the spectrum, down to the use of a stylus.

So, is the Ipod Touch just a tiny tablet? Or is it big ass mp3 player?

why, you can use the ipod touch with one hand just as you can use other mp3 players with one hand...that was my criteria for separating devices.

You can use almost all phones with one hand as well, you can't use tablets with one hand, you can't use the note with one hand. That's what I'm getting at. I don't think it's too insane.

Why is it necessary to separate these devices into labels? I mean, who cares really? If you're comfortable using it, then use it. If you're not comfortable using it, don't use it?

why, you can use the ipod touch with one hand just as you can use other mp3 players with one hand...

But going by your lodgic, the Ipod touch is much closer in size to a phone then a normal mp3 player.

By the by, I can use a Note with one hand or I was able to when I finally got to try one out.

Most people have two hands you know.

If it fits a SIM chip and works as phone, it's a phone.

but my point is about functionality. You can use all the functionalities of the ipod touch with similar effort of a normal mp3 player. Whereas with the note, you cannot use A TON of it's functionalities with only one hand. I think when the majority functionality of your phone is out of one hand grasp, it ceases to be a "phone".

ok? No one is saying otherwise. I even stated early in the thread, if you're cool with it you're cool with it.

what if they managed to put a sim card in a toaster HUH OR A COUCH

stated early in the thread, if you're coo

Thats what you say, but again you are here trying to.... what.... define electronic devices by their size rather than their function?

Oooooooooooookay.... Not sure who even asked for that, or who you are even talking to, but knock yourself out I guess.

what if they managed to put a sim card in a toaster HUH OR A COUCH

If it could make calls, they would say someone built a 'phone' into those devices. But again, what does this have to do with the topic again? Who cares to bargain with anyone over what is a phone and what isn't?

I don't think it's really for holding up to the ear, more of an option just in case there's no bluetooth headset around. I personally would go for a tablet sized wifi version of this if they get the wacom screen to be responsive 1:1 or at least unnoticeable to people. That's the main complaint so far with the S-Pen feature.

My beef with a lot of manufacturers is that equate bigger screen to better features, as seen with HTC one V - X. My limit isn't the screen size, but the size of the phone. The Galaxy S 4" screen can be bumped up to 4.3" if you add 1-3 mm of height and with to the phone. Compare Galaxy S to Galaxy Nexus and you add about a centimeter to the height and again 1-3 mm to the width. But they mess with user perception by making it thinner, but I'm not sure if that will intentionally trick me into to thinking that it's nearly the same as my Galaxy S Vibrant.

Yeah I know, but I'm just confused by why it's necessary. Calling the Note a phone or a tablet doesn't really change anything about it.

I do wonder alot about the digitizer in the next revision. The one in the Note is a lot better than most, but there is always room for improvement there. I wonder if they will really go for it on the next version. I was surprised they even sprung for Wacom on this first version TBH.

There was an extremely humorous opportunity for a photoshop there.

Choice is good. 5 million in a global sense is a niche market - one that Samsung was smart enough to fill quickly, but it doesn't mean every phone is trending towards this extreme. I don't understand how so many people in this thread are like the douche who wrote the Gizmodo article in feeling threatened or insulted that such a device exists.

The arguments that exist here based on purely subjective judgements are crazy.

Because some people are insecure. Some people need their own choices validated, by the choices of others. These normally the same people that express their individuality wearing, saying and buying the same things everyone else does.

Have you refrained from defending anything paltry on the internet before?

I'd be shocked if you said no

So you're saying you're different just like everyone else?

Purple Dragon mother fucker. Learn to color wheel.

Yes I enjoy what I enjoy with little regard for what other people then is "cool". That seems to be a crazy concept going by some of the posters in this thread.
1. "Real men" don't know about these "chick" colors.

2. See 1 and draw the lines

Choice is good. Opinions of something stupid is good as well, so things can be designed better.

Wanting something bigger than the iPhone is far from niche. But wanting something that big is niche.

Ok that was the stupidest thing I have read today.

The points it makes are: it's a crappy phone and the people who use it are stupid.

The argument: it's too big.

The first point can sort of be made with the argument, but that IS totally subjective, what is too big for one can be too small for others. The only benchmark for this is sales. And the point is kind of disproved by the 5 million people buying it. Clearly there is a market for this.

The people who actually bought it clearly didn't think it's too big, because they bought it. Size is one of those things people kind of notice when in the store buying it. It's not one of those thing that you didn't really experience in the store.

Clearly the article is a testament to how the author misjudges consumers.

Samsung was smart and designed a strange form factor to see if it would stick. It did. And sold 5 million units. That means they and those 5 millions weren't wrong.

Also taste isn't really appropriate here since taste would apply to form rather than function. The size is because of its function not a design choice.

LOL, there is nothing to defend here. But I do reserve the right to poke fun at the posters in this thread, that seem to be threatened by the very existence of Note. Like the douche that wrote the article.

Man, that's comparison speaks more of you than of the phone.
I mean what's the merit of it?
Both are big.

Yeah.

There are other things that are big, you know things that grow better with size.
Like TVs, dicks, swimming pools, penises.

Now personally, I find the Note to be too big, but that's simply because it doesn't comfortably fit the pockets of the pants I typically wear and I don't carry a bag/European carryall.
Not because of Hummer, ya'll rednecks LOL.

Ever wondered why no one ever accused me of being a fanboy?

Ultimately every purchase is a list of pro's and con's.

For me it might be too big, and too-something is a con.

That con can be important to you but everybody has to judge it by his or her own standards. What is important to me is not important to you. And some people see the added value in the bigger screen and stylus.

To simply say people who don't agree are stupid only shows that the author is stupid. Especially when there are over 5 million people having out weight all factors and competitors came to the conclusion this was the right choice.

The only valid thing people can say about this is that it is too big for themselves and possibly the majority. That doesn't make others stupid, especially when their numbers are quite high. It just shows that they find other things more important, or can fit it in their hands and pockets...
