Gizmodo: "Most people have poor taste". 5m Galaxy note users CAN be wrong.

How sad do you have to be to hate on a phone and the people who buy it? Good grief. I don't like apple products in general but I recognize they're well made devices and there's nothing wrong with people owning an iphone. Who cares if you don't like the way Galaxy Note looks that doesn't make it wrong. He seems to be butt hurt because people enjoy the big screen and they don't care about the slim sleek bs of apple products. Not everything has to be the size of a damn penny.

It is justified if they're using a first-gen N-Gage. Otherwise, they shouldn't.

Wow the nGage really was the most hilariously ill-conceived device ever. I forgot how small the screen was!

I used an N-Gage, and even bought the redesign. It was a good phone, and had many more gaming options than any other phone. I don't think screen sizes varied much. I completely acknowledge that I looked like a tool when talking on it (and you could actually hold it the "normal" way and still hear and speak clearly). But, it is literally the only cell phone I've used that I never had to adjust even once to hear properly. The speaker was always perfectly centered in your ear.

I'm intrigued by the Note, but at this point I'm trying to consolidate devices and I've just managed to get a phone/wallet combo that works. Plus, I'm pretty deep in the Apple infrastructure and don't want to start over.

Plus, every other Apple thread where Android fanboys pile in and universally condemn Apple fans.

I bought a Galaxy S2 a month or so ago. Within a week it started acting up, thinking it was in car mode and draining the battery. Took it back to my service provider. They chalked it up to 'liquid damage' and refused to even offer a repair. The thing was no-where near water in the the 4 days I had it. Called Samsung. They said they'd send out an envelope to send it back in. Two weeks later, no envelope appeared. I called them. 'Must've have gotten lost, we'll send you another one.' Now, here I am, over a month later, waiting for some fabled envelope to arrive.

Thus, I strongly endorse any article that rags on Samsung, their faulty products, and their fiercely poor customer support.

I hold my phone up to to me head probably less than 1% of the time I use it. I use it mostly for mobile internet, media, texting, and when I talk, I usually do it with a headset.

I have an iPhone 4, but wouldn't mind a phone the size of the Note.

I use the normal gaf site for browsing but what do I know, I'm an Android user, I never had to jump hoops just to view a web site.

I used the webapp on my Evo, too. I just recently made the switch back to iOS. I couldn't care less about what brand something is. Fanboys are weird (not saying you are one, just a general statement).

As a phone, the iPhone is perfectly sized.

As a mobile computing device, the iPhone is too small.

And there lies the problem. I'm willing to guess most people use their phones more doing multimedia stuff (taking photo's, web browsing, gaming, watching vids, looking at photo's etc) than actually talking on the phone.

It's the reason why imo the iPhone is becoming a bit irrelevant in it's current form, at least for my personal use. This coming from someone who owns the 4S, had a 4 and a 3GS.

That picture confirms what I thought, the Note looks ridiculous up to the ear. The "remember when" argument doesn't work, you'd look ridiculous using one of those original cinderblock cellphones today too.

Ohhoho yes it does. I feel bad for them.

It does look like a decent little tab though.

Yes, you love the iPhone and its form factor. We get it by now.

Personal preference/bias aside, you're missing the point of the phone. Believe it or not, many people rarely use their smartphones for talking. The bulk use of the smartphone for these users involves texting and tablet style computing. If those were my priorities, the Note would be ideal. Pinch to zoom cannot die a quick enough death.

I pretty much barely ever use pinch to zoom on my iPhone. Did you not know about the double-tap to smart resize feature? I pretty much exclusively use that.

Cold and insulting as he might have been, Steve Jobs' idea tyranny got one thing right: the masses don't know what they want. They don't care about design unless it's foisted upon them, and would prefer their objects stand out than stand any test of time.
Is that why all of my Apple devices except my iPod have started to break down after around 2 years of regular use?

You must use it in landscape mode a lot? If you use it in portrait, with a lot of web browsing pinch to zoom is a must. Having said that, I really like pinch to zoom, especially for photo viewing.

I agree. It works wonders with most text. But eShopping and other functional websites with small buttons still drive me nuts. Also, a personal bias (since I assume less than 1% do this) would be remoting to desktop. Often, I just don't even bother on my smartphone and wait until I have access to my iPad.

Obviously 2 years is more than enough to update to the next iDevice.

Seriously though, although I quite like some Apple stuff... especially the new iPad which is holy freakin' crap spec wise...

There's no way I can afford to be sucked into the Apple ecology. I value my freedom of choice far too much and am willing to compromise on the niceties that they do produce so that I can have choice on the decisions of theirs that I don't agree with (such as the screen size of their phone).

Can't wait to see all the Apple fans change their tune (like they always do) once the iPhone is released with a bigger screen. It will be like MMS, video, camera, screen, flash, resolution etc etc all over again.

You would be right. Its been trending that way for a long long long time. Probably since the iPhone first started out. It really shouldnt be surprising that with all the things smartphones can do, talking takes a bit of a back seat:

Smartphone usage has been migrating toward apps and away from web browsing. Additionally, voice usage has also taken a back seat to the apps.

Smartphone usage concentrates on apps rather than talking or web browsing. An average smartphone user will spend around 700 minutes a month perusing apps on their device.

Zokem studies smartphone usage and has issued reports on world-wide usage from Finland to the United States.

As you can see from the accompanying chart, an average daily usage shows apps taking over voice and web browsing. Email and texting usage still exceeds apps usage.

Apps and mobile web usage go up dramatically in the evening. People may sit down to relax in the evening and use their smartphone instead of going over to their computer.

Larger screens while remaining small enough to fit in a pocket/pocketbook accents what people do most on their mobile devices. The success really shouldnt be that surprising. Especially considering how good of a device it is in the first place.

sorry but no way in hell apple releases a 5.3 inch "phone". If apple goes to 3.7 or even 4 inches max (they won't go over), that's nowhere near the shear magnitude of the note.

That's why Apple created the iPad. Too small for your phone? Use another device.

It's relatively simple and understandable to most people. I'm a fan of separation of duties if it means I get a better experience. I want to browse the internet on my iPad, but not take pictures with it, and vice versa on my iPhone.

I will challenge you to find the same "Apple fans" who said all of this was not needed but changed their minds

Hey, I still use my phone as a phone.

Taking photos? It's the perfect size. Why would you need a bigger device when it's the sensor that matters? If I wanted to lug around a big camera, I'd bring my Nikon DSLR with me. At least with that I'd get proper photos.

Web browsing? Ya, a bigger screen would be nice for that, but it wouldn't fit in my pocket. I tend to mostly use the web browsing aspect it out of boredom or for quick reference.

Gaming? Not all that much, anymore. I'm not as much of a gamer as I used to be, and I really don't like touch-screen controls anyway. A bigger device isn't going to make much of a difference in that department.

Watching vids and looking at photos? Well, I installed Netflix on my iPhone, but I can count the number of times I've used it on exactly no hands. I have no use for watching movies or anything on a handheld device. I'd much rather wait until I see it on a screen size that I can actually enjoy it on. My 13" laptop is pretty much at the low end of my standard. My HP TouchPad is at the bottom. Photos? Same. My iPhone is handy for showing photos quickly to friends, but I'd rather transfer them to and enjoy them on a full-size screen.

So yes, the iPhone is just fine for me. If it was a bit larger I wouldn't complain, but if it was much larger it wouldn't do at all. If I can't fit it in a standard pants pocket (I don't shop at Hot Topic), I can't take it it with me any time and any place. That's who whole point of a mobile phone.

And you will lose if he actually puts any effort into it. He will be able to find people that even scoffed at a 4" screen if it comes to that. That's not a good bet. But its besides the point anyway, this thread isnt about Apple. Always does tend to find its way into them though.

That's what I love about these platform wars man, the terms get newer, the arguments are the same.

It was a genuine challenge as I've not really paid attention to it on here.

'any effort' will find that about any fans of a product, Apple or not. The generalities about whole groups of pepple are usually fallacies and often destroy the point of any thread. There are people who like a certain form factor. There are some who wouldn't mind a larger one than the current model. Simple as that.

I agree, but the Note is not the standard, rather a niche or a rare breed of it's kind. It's requirement for a large size is largely (I'd imagine) fuelled by it's stylus. Heck, I felt like I could get more pin point precision using the stylus with the Note than I could with an iPad, so in that sense it serves it's purpose.

iPhone 5 will likely be closer to the size of the Galazy Nexus/S3 etc.

That's why Apple created the iPad. Too small for your phone? Use another device.

Why would I want to carry the iPad around with me on a day to day basis? Progress in this realm, as it always has been, will be moving towards a do it all device. In several years time, these things will have DSLR like camera quality, Audiophile DAC's and all the rest. That's what these devices are moving towards but every now and again companies (like Apple) like to split this up in order to create another cash cow which they'll milk as much as they can. Such as the iPad for example.

And if you truly were a fan of "a separation of duties" you wouldn't even own an iPhone, which is pretty much one of the best examples of a merging of duties as you can find. I find the iPhone isn't actually that great as a "phone" per se, more as a multimedia device with phone capabilities.

Screen size really is one of it's few, but also major let downs.

Also, definitely not going to waste my time on the challenge but people who browse these forums already know it's a pointless one. Every time it's the same crap. It doesn't need higher resolution, it's perfect! It doesn't need flash, it'll be more bulky for it and will mess with the simplistic design! MMS, who uses that anyway? Who needs a bigger screen, it's perfect as it is! Camera quality? That's what point and shoots are for. Etc etc. Same story different iPhone/iPad/iPod generation. There's always something in the way of a defence from the most passionate fans lol.

Yes and people also said touch screen devices, tablets, and removing the floppy drive is a stupid idea. Are we really going to make this a part of the conversation? ffs

Yup. When Apple killed all legacy ports on the iMac and made everything connect through USB, in addition to axing the floppy, the PC crowd was rolling on the floor laughing for days.

But I don't know what any of this has to do with screen sizes.

But on the matter of screen sizes, there's plenty of 17" laptops available. I don't know a single person who has one, because at that size you may as well just have a desktop.

by the same token, lots of os9 greybeards (do they still exist?) thought preemptive multitasking was dumb. But who gives a shit about that.

I once saw a girl trying to use a 17" PowerBook on a flight. It did not look fun lol

5.3 is excessive but there is market for it but the only phone I'll ever buy is an iPhone from now on and I hate apple!

Of I had the choice of a 3.5 screen or a bigger one, I'd always go for the bigger one. I rarely use mine for calls.

Just texts, Internet and apps inc fb

Apple played the OS9 to OS X transition right. They gave OS9 just enough continued support until OS X was ready for prime time before burying it.

A 17" laptop to me is like a 5.3" phone. Cumbersome and almost comical. But some people, who either have something to prove or have an odd idea of portability, like them.

(Oh, and 17" laptops have a use if you're a professional going from desk to desk and do serious stuff like produce movies on location.)

No one doesn't want a bigger screen. What many Apple fans don't want though is a bigger phone.

So overall, many would love to a have a bigger screen as long as the size of the phone stays mainly the same.

I kind of agree with the article in one sense, which is that I think that a lot of people have a poor sense of taste. Maybe Note users included, I dunno. But phone use doesn't really affect me personally. I'm more concerned about when popular opinion causes things to be done in the popular sphere that are in poor taste, like Poundbury. It's goddamn fuckugly.

All of this, and to think, this thing is less than a year old. It will probably do 10 million or near it before they release a new yearly update for it, not to mention competing products of similar size from the other hardware manufacturers. And I expect a press release from them when it does. That guy is going to lose his goddamn mind.

I like this one:

Using a Korean phone to talk as though America either i) is the only free market in the world ii) invented the free market.

Amazing.

I am fairly sure considering the context, and the reasoning used by the author that the poster was replying to, that he was hinting towards the fact that you have freedom of choice and can buy, or choose NOT to buy whatever device you like or dislike. Not that America was the only free market in the world, and certainly not that they invented the concept.

It really is quite tiny. The Galaxy Nexus at 4.65" is a bit too big for my tastes but not to that much annoyance. And I do love the real estate for Draw Something, web browsing, and comic reading.

4.3" or thereabouts is probably the sweet spot. The iPhone being 0.8" smaller just makes it feel really cramped. But I guess that's what the iPad's for?

I don't want to analyse Gizmodo posts too closely, but why even mention America if that was the point? I think they thought they meant that in China they force you to buy a phone you don't want or something. At least, that's how I am going to imagine it was meant.

I think the Note is a bit too big - but that's just my opinion. I'm happy with my iPhone size, but I would be okay with it being a bit bigger (half an inch or so).

I believe the Note is the biggest smartphone available at the moment, so I'm always surprised when people make its size a point of contention.
