God of War Launches Early 2018 (PS4)

Having replayed GoW 3 Titan mode last week, I found this is bs
Obviously sensationalized for effect. The way the previous games' combat is being described is sensationalized as well. There was nothing overly complex or satisfying about it to me and I really like the series. It's enjoyable but mindless. I never felt strong. I never felt like I was embodying the protagonist.

This combat actually looks like it fits in with the character and the tone of the game much more than the button mashing LED whips that came before.

Please gif that Son combo, look awesome!

Bad quality though!

The shoulder camera really gives you a sense of scale when looking up, and a sense of intimacy when looking down. It's a fantastic change for the series.

Why doesn't Sony release all the videos to download on PS4 in the highest qualities for each game and to watch at ease like on PS3 some time ago?

The thing I noticed though, and was present last year, is that when you engage in combat the camera pulls away and you have a wider FOV.

Some of the hot takes in this thread are just..eh.

They released six games in the series built around a previous play style and surrounding, what more do folks want ? To not reinvent and just keep doing the same thing until it also becomes another Halo/Gears ?

I am glad they are going down this road, it makes the future games much more exciting. Keep up the good work SM.

I really wish they didnt go with the dad, have him with you thing. Changing it up to a new hero, time and such would have been better but they pretty much ruined kratos imo

Man, I dunno if I'll be awake for the hour presentation so hopefully any new info gets summarized here or in a new thread.

Easily the best looking game of the show for me. The combat, those scenerie, not even mentioning how insanely good looking those character models are.

I feel that this is just the perfect direction for this game to take.

Combat looks like a lot of fun! I am absolutely loving the axe. It looks badass, and I just love how Kratos is using it! Love the shield too. Not quite sure why, but I really like small-ish/circular-ish shields combo'd with a single-handed weapon. .....

Yup, the combat looks good.(now dnt judge me, bcoz of my name and avatar :)) In the past games, with so many enemies on the screen, at times one dont even care whom among the 50 or so enemies on the screen, your blades are hitting...lol.
Here, there were few occasions where he was fighting one on one with some big dude, iirc. Another welcome change.

This place isn't just a random location, it's an entire frozen giant. Look at the fingernails and fingers:

I hope he wakes up at some point of time in the game.

Lol @ name and avatar and comment
Hey, man likes his God of War. I don't blame him.

he he. Yea, I joined gaf, after last year's E3 and there is no other game I want more since then.

Loved how he was asking his son what that serpent is saying towards the end, rather than his usual response - "Serpent..I''m gonna f** #$#%^^". BTW, how come his son understands what that snake was saying but not Kratos?

The new camera is really refreshing. I love my God of War games and I regularly come back to them, but by Ascension it felt really damn samey. It also seems to work really well in scenarios they showed. Still, I'm disappointed we didn't see any setpiece sequences in the trailer as these are moments where camera flying around really far away from the character worked the best. I'm very excited for the game, but I'm still cautious about it for the reason above.

I feel like every Sony AAA game looks like another Naughty Dog game and that saddens me a lot.

I don't know if Santa Monica writers will be able to make a really deep story between two characters, and that's not what I liked about previous God of War games (the dream sequence in 3 was prettt bad).

But I hope i'm wrong and I'll love it!

Incredible....amazing visually and looks like the story will be as good. This is exactly the direction I wanted the GOW series to take for this gen.

I don't even care about the combat, i'm all about that super intimate revolutionary (for a GoW) story and the crazy locales.

I feel like a lot of people are going to manly cry in this game.

Kratos must knows the place at the beginning of the trailer. He must be seeking the snake. That is why he threw his axe in the water and tried to call it back to verify:
if it came back to him, then this is not the right place whre the head of the snake is located, if it doesn't, it means the snake swallowed it and he is coming like what we saw at the end of the trailer. when he threw it up after.
Kratos is mostly meeting the snake at the beginning of the game, or at least after getting his morphing gauntlet, since he doesn't carry the blinking head. The scens with Krtaos having the head must happen after meeting the world snake.
I don't think the world snake would be the final boss.

Im fine with the combat (though I prefer the old style and flair) as long as there's still over the top set pieces. Pulling WAY out and seeing tiny Kraros fly around while killing giant creatures in spectacular ways was always my favourite oart of GOW games

That trailer was amazing, the whole thing looked like a pre-rendered cutscene. Everything is real time right??? This shit is insane, and the trailer is amazing. I went from being marginally to extremely excited for God of War. The new combat looks great to me. I will miss the old combat though

11:00 am PST

Thanks, man :)

Btw without playing it I can't criticize the combat much but I also think it's not going to be just
mashing 1-2 buttons. It's not going to be a hardcore action game either, but GoW games never were like that imo.
I hope we see more about the combat in the hour presentation, I can't wait

Also about the giant serpent
he probably wants to make a deal with Kratos to take down Thor.

Spot on. Mainly Xbox guy here, but I played the GoW trilogy. Combat imo, was mediocre and Kratos was insufferable and one dimensional as a character. At least Master Chief shuts up.

Those flaws seems to be addressed here. I like dad-Kratos way better, and it seems like the stry might be more meaningful. If GoW4 keeps up with the massive beautfiful set pieces, then this is a real winner!

Wish The Coalition had Santa Monica's balls, as there is only one GoW4 that matters now.

Last years showing had killed all my hype but this demo has completely brought me back in. That straight up looked like God of War gameplay. Not sure why the hell I ever doubted Cory Barlog, God of War 2 remains the best God of War game and it also had the most weapon variety. Seems pretty obvious you will get the Blades of Chaos at some point in this game but after six games with them I am totally ok with them taking a back seat.

rewatching trailer
this gave me chills.

i can't believe this is god of war. every aspect of the franchise looks like it grew up (for lack of a better term) in one fell swoop.

edit: That Geoff Cory Balrog interview is great. He sounds so focused and knows the full ins and outs of the game and franchise

The camera is just too close to Kratos during combat for my liking. I feel like the camera should be zooming out slightly (and upward) during extreme combat, so you can see the wider playing area, more enemies and therefore be more strategic with your play style.

Aside from that, it looks stunning. I probably will miss the fixed camera of the GoW games though, as it just had a more 'directors' vibe to it, with carefully placed camera angles to see scenery etc. But I realise I'm probably alone on this, I loved the fixed camera in the DMC games too.

I'm not sure how I feel about this.

This doesn't feel like God of War to me.

The combat looks okay but where is none of that gore the serious is known for.

Also, this feels like 'daddy simulator' than 'God of War' to me. The series is known for an epic adventure, spectacular set-pieces and boss fights. Didn't really get that sense from the trailer.

he cut an enemy in 2, vertically, with his axe.

I guess I forgot where after 6 games the combat in God of War was anything special. You could Square Square Triangle your way through that entire series even on higher difficulties.

I commend SSM for trying something new with the series and what they've shown looks far more interesting and potentially more satisfying than the series has had before.

lol what? All 6 God of War games offered a real solid challenge on higher difficulties and it is where the combat shinned the most. Normal and easy are the only modes that let you get away with spamming the same combo. Hell, God of War Ascension literally had to get patched because people were complaining the Trial of Archimedes was too hard.

No the combat in the previous games was fantastic. Sure it was simple, but it was extremely satisfying and fun to play. Every hit felt like a solid impact.
