I can't spend 50 bucks on all this stuff. People help me cut this list down please!

Edit: I don't know how to make the image on the right stick to the top instead of stay on the bottom sorry!

No really. Help me cut out the fat.

I'd drop the Creatures games and Wing Commander 3 personally, but apart from that it's a good solid list which is high in protein and low in fat.

I can tell you it works with Freespace 2 but it doesn't read the throttle lever since it's analogue. All the other buttons can be used and mapped.

I need a space sim for my flight stick other than freespace. Which Descent games? Which Wing Commander games? Help me GAF.

Ah I see. So if the throttle lever doesn't work in these games, there's not really a point to getting the Hotas then? Might as well just get a cheaper Logitech one that just has the stick?

I'm currently in fear of purchasing the titles I've been coveting for awhile now - the time commitment required by BGII, Planescape, Arcanum, another play-through of Fallout 1/2... we're talking hundreds of hours right there.

Might need to settle on just one to do it justice time-wise, and I've never played Planescape: Torment...so maybe that's my answer?

Well the lever does have 5-6 buttons on it if you want more stuff at the ready. But yes, I would recommend just getting a joystick and using the kb for all the other commands.

id pick :
Decent ( love this game to death when i was a kid and still do as a adult )
outcast ( great soundtrack and gameplay)
wing commander 3 (FMV game yes plz)
Never winternights +Baulders gate 2 (great hack and slash D&D type game)
earthworm jim 1+2 (classic)

cant say anything else about the other since i dont remember playing any of those other games...

cant say anything else since i haven played the others

Thanks for all your help guys. I ended up cutting some of the stuff (Earthworm Jim I played to death, and while it would be fun to revisit I'd rather have some "new" experiences). Since I have Freespace 2 why buy 1 right? Tex Murphy is gone as well and Ishar as well (I don't know why I put it in there, it just kinda looked interesting). If I really want it later it's not like it's gone forever!

Still spent way too much money. Hopefully I'll just spend less on steam this year (lol).

Cool thanks for the advice. Saved me some money not getting the Hotas.

Alright so uh...Arcanum. Wow it looks pretty damn deep.

What are some basic pointers for starting out?

I made a human who I guess is gonna turn out to be a mage. Currently she knows Harm and Minor Healing.

Read somewhere there's a pretty good party-member in a town or something but you have to rush over to where he is before he's killed off. No idea what that's about.
Mages are insanely overpowered in Arcanum. Combat basically boils down to:
1. Harm
2. Is it dead?
2a No - Repeat step 1
2b Yes - Step 3
3. Grats

Only tips would be: DO NOT KILL the gypsy fortune teller woman if you're evil, and go all out on role-playing. Also teleportation saves a ton of time.

Recommendations on games that work well in windowed mode?
Like watching a starcraft stream on the left side of the screen and playing on the right side, preferably that works well with tabbing.

So here's what I pared by list down to. Anything that doesn't belong? I'm thinking of taking off the Rayman games, and maybe even EWJ, but EWJ may be worth it just for the soundtracks alone. AR is also iffy, but a lot of people swear by it, and call it an under-appreciated gem.

So whats the worst?

I haven't played Creatures so I can't talk about that.

Out of the stuff I've played, Tex Murphy 1 & 2 are pretty awful. Under A Killing Moon and The Pandora directive (the next two games in the series) are far better. And while Neverwinter Nights isn't a bad game, it's certainly nowhere near Bioware's better releases.

Probably a longshot but anyone willing to gift a couple of GoGs for a $5 amazon credit (game downloads) or a $9 off amazon Kingdoms of Amalur preorder code? Looking for a $3 and $5 game respectively.

Someone's pieced together a GOGmix of the games that aren't on sale. There really aren't many!

http://www.gog.com/en/mix/games_that_are_not_in_the_2011_xmas_sale

1NSANE
Gothic (2 and 3 are, just not the first)
Cannon Fodder
IGI 2: Covert Strike
Perimeter
Second Sight
Sensible Soccer 2006
Soldiers: Heroes of WW2

Looking at the breakdown, it's basically Codemasters stuff and Gothic (presumably because that's published by Piranha Bytes, whereas 2 and 3 were published by Nordic Games)

I need help, should I get Ice wind dale 1 or 2?
Also should I even bother with either since I'm gonna' buy Baldur's Gate 2?

I think IWD1 is a nicely balanced and "shorter" RPG with a bigger focus on action that will give you a good introduction to the infinity engine D&D games (~20-40 hours compared to ~50-100+ or so). You still need to do a little reading of the manuals if you're new to the material, but in IWD1 you get to make a full party of 6 characters yourself, starting from level 1 going to the high 20s, and it doesn't dwell too long on the lower levels like Baldur's Gate 1 does, which a lot of people dislike. The battles are fun in IWD1, and the plot is good too, with some enjoyable voice acting occasionally mixed in. Graphically, the pre-rendered environments are very pleasing, and I also enjoy the wintry theme. The music is great as well. By the time you finish Icewind Dale you should have a very good grasp of the way you want to play BG2, what class and tactics you prefer to use, since the Baldur Gate games normally only have you making a single character and recruiting others to your cause, so the decision of what character do I make out of dozens and dozens is a little more intimidating if you're new.

Can anyone tell me how good are the Tex Murphy games? I get that the first two aren't very good, but what about the rest? In a general sense, which is the best and how good have they aged?

I picked up Enclave... for 3 bucks it's good for a laugh. The graphics are really nice for a game from 2002.

Enclave is anything but a laugh. It's a bone-crushing, rage-inducing, fist-through-the-wall romp. Well worth it though. Good luck!

I might just buy every single item in my wishlist (20+ games) with this sale. Amazing.

Thanks for the input, Icewind 1 looks like a good get.

Are there any other advantages to buying on GOG as opposed to gamersgate aside from the Bookshelf UI?
No DRM, all games made to work well in DOS box, you often get soundtracks and other extras.

No really. Help me cut out the fat.

Forget about Freespace (you can get Freespace 2 based open source games), Tex Murphy 1+2 (or get UNDER A KILLING MOON), Neverwinter Nights (it's not that good and I don't see any point in replaying it), at least one of the Creatures and Independence Wars (at least if you are not the most hardcore fan of those titles).

Only get Earthworm, Ishar and Raptor for nostalgic reasons! Didn't age that well in my opinion.

Wing Commander 3 is worth getting for the extras alone!

Outcast is worth getting because getting the original version to run on a modern system is a real pain.

Baldur's Gate 2, Descent and Alpha Centauri are true classics that are still fun to play.

There you go: BG2, WC3, Outcast, Descent and AC - all fat removed :)

So I leave a game to download overnight and I come into my office this morning and there is nothing on my computer. I download the installer and it does nothing...

What am I doing wrong?

Also with gog- if I ever get it to work- does it receive updates from the developers? How does one go about updating games?

I don't remember if Gamersgate offers DRM-free installers on certain games but every single GOG installer works fine without an internet connection.

Also, most games come with a bunch of extras. Manuals, art, music, sometimes even production documents.

Forget about Freespace (you can get Freespace 2 based open source games)
Oh man, I assumed he already had Freespace 2. If not, GET THAT since it's the best space sim on GOG by far. Freespace 2 Open is one of the best modding projects I've ever seen.

Maybe the GOG downloader application is confusing things? Just use the "download using browser" option since it's easiest. If the game is bigger than 2 gigabytes, you'll have to download multiple files before starting the installation.

As for updates, GOG's stuff is old enough that the developers are no longer updating the games. If GOG releases a new version to help with compatibility, you'll have to redownload the game.

If you used the downloader app they have it downloads to:

I feel dirty I just bought:

Sim city 2K
Driver
Baulders Gate II

This sale keeps tempting me to go back. Already spent $25, but the thought of just filling out the Infinity Engine collection, or rebuilding my King's Quest collection since the Steam package is garbage... maybe checking out Space Quest?

Oh dear.

Gabriel Knight??

Play one game now and move on to the next...Freespace/Baldurs gate are safe games to start with.

I fucking adore IWD1, It's basically takes the best part of the baldurs gate series (the combat) and wraps it up in quality encounters and the best god damn Isometric art that's ever been seen in a CRPG.

The only reason it didn't sell like a bioware game is because it didn't have the bullshit romance. Hugely underrated game.

IWD2 was a quick turnaround product from when Black isle/interplay was struggling. It's a still a great title, but you could tell they were feeling the pain.

Do I need to play Baldur's Gate 1 before 2?

How about Freespace 2?

BG: not necessarily but the story in BG2 is a direct continuation from BG1. There's a mod that turns the whole thing into one big experience.

Freespace: no, the story in FS2 isn't too important and the mission logs will bring you up to speed. And there are mods that basically rebuild the first game in FS2's engine.

What's wrong with the KQ collection on Steam? You know you can launch the games individually using DosBox instead of going through the bizarre front end, right?

You can download all your games and keep them on an external hdd to be installed when and wherever. Manuals and stuff are good.

Hows TEX MURPHY: OVERSEER?
It's a remake iirc of Martian Memorandum (or Mean Streets, one of the two). It's a solid game but not as good as Killing Moon or Pandora Directive.

Do it!!! The best graphic adventure game of all time.

I've actually played the first one before, but I was a kid and had a bootleg copy on floppy or something. Would be nice to have a digital version, as with everything.

God I love digital.

the best part of the baldurs gate series (the combat)
Nah. The combat's interesting and I have a good time with it but Baldur's Gate is a LOT bigger than that. And those romances you mentioned are such a small part of BG2 that I can only imagine your resentment of current Bioware games is influencing you.

I should really play Icewind Dale. I never bothered because I tend to dislike dungeon crawlers in general. A game could have the best combat system ever but I really start to miss regular RPG stuff after a while.

I didn't know that. I could never get any of the games to launch.
Just use a current build of SCUMMVM. It supports most of the Sierra adventure games now and it's a lot easier than setting up DOSBox from scratch.

(Later games like Gabriel Knight and King's Quest 7 still won't work but KQ1-6 are fine)
